it all started in 8th year
Harry James Potter
It was a well known fact that Harry Potter, the Boy-who-lived and, Draco Malfoy, the Malfoy heir were enemies, rivals if you must. So when McGonagall had told the 8th years, the two were to be roommates, everyone had expected complete and utter chaos, but to everyone’s surprise they were getting along. As if they had been friends since the beginning of their Hogwarts career. It was the biggest mystery of that year.
Harry Potter, was Teddy Black-Lupin’s godfather and now guardian since both his parents had died during the final battle. The boy stayed with Andromeda, the boy's biological grandmother. Teddy was carried by Nymphadora Tonks; she served as a surrogate for the couple when she heard that Sirius and Remus had troubles conceiving and was considering the possibility of surrogacy. The couple was delighted and took her up on her offer, giving the couple what they always wanted; a family of their own. Teddy was only a year old when Sirius and Remus died, leaving Harry with the baby. He had always seen himself in Teddy ever since, orphaned by both parents at only a year old because of a war that happened before his time. But Harry proved to be a great guardian, he loved Teddy and Teddy loved him. Teddy, however, also loved Draco Malfoy.
It was a week and a half after the Battle of Hogwarts that Andromeda informed him that Narcissa Malfoy and her son were to visit, in an effort to rekindle their sisterly bond and who was he to deny her of her happiness? So, there he was eating in Andromeda’s house with the Malfoy’s. It started rather awkward to say the least, Narcissa- Cissy (she insisted) had thanked her for keeping his son safe and Malfoy, Merlin, Malfoy was polite to him. He knew the boy had wanted to put the past behind them, but he did not expect Malfoy to act polite to him in this lifetime. It did amuse him when he saw how Malfoy tried to give him a compliment, only to fall short. But Malfoy was good with Teddy, it was natural to him. He played with Teddy, made him laugh and actually got Teddy to eat his mashed peas without making a mess.
“I never imagined you’d be good with Teddy, or any child for that matter.” He says making himself comfortable on the couch, looking at the blonde and the child sitting on the floor building who knows what with the bricks scattered in front of them. “But, it’s nice seeing you like this. You should smile more, Malfoy. It suits you.”
“I always enjoyed spending time at the kids area during balls at the manor so this just comes as a skill set I developed through years of training. Unlike you, Potter, I had to learn.” Draco says, still not looking at the other boy.
“Yes, well, as the Chosen One I am naturally good at everything. The Wizarding World might faint at the sight of me failing after all.”
“Oh yes. The special Chosen One. Forgive my humble existence. How could I ever compare to your greatness.” Malfoy rolls his eyes and for the first time since the war Harry laughs.
Unbeknownst to the two, the sisters had seen them talking and how Harry had laughed at Draco's words. "Seems like we didn't need to worry, Cissy"
It was the start of their close friendship. Malfoy visited with his mom quite often and helped with taking care of Teddy while they left the sisters with the renovations of Malfoy Manor. Harry had genuinely enjoyed Malfoys presence. The boy acted as he always would with him, minus the bullying and the offensive remarks, Harry found that Malfoy was quite funny. There was always the Malfoy sass, but Harry did not mind.
It was in the second week of their budding friendship that Harry brought Hermione and Ron to Andromeda’s hut under Hermione’s persuasion. Ron and Malfoy were civil at most, they would talk about quidditch but that was it, nothing beyond the polite exchanges of words. It was with Hermione he regretted his decision to give into the witch and introduce the two. Malfoy and Hermione had more in common than they anticipated, exchanging conversations of history, philosophy and theory. The two were so lost in conversation with each other that they had completely lost track of time and only stopped when Ron had told them that Hermione and him had needed to leave. Soon after, Malfoy left too. Harry was sure to not invite Hermione again during their babysitting days, Teddy needed Malfoys attention after all.
When Hogwarts finally started, they made sure to tell Teddy that they would come back every weekend to visit and play with him even if he only responded with babbles. Harry and Malfoy were seen together everywhere, during classes, in the hallways and even during meal times. The students of Hogwarts were left with questions and rumors, but Harry paid no attention.
It was one of the rare afternoons that Harry was not beside the blonde and was walking around the corridors of the school with Ron, Seamus and Dean making their way to the Quidditch pitch to play a 2v2 game. Malfoy had left their dorm earlier than usual to spend time with his fellow Slytherins, so Harry feeling bored had asked his previous roommates to play Quidditch (Neville had refused since he was busy with his apprenticeship with Professor Sprout). Harry had felt great, his nightmares had lessened since coming back to Hogwarts and he was finally playing Quidditch again without the fear of some no nose maniac coming after his life. Life was truly gre-
“Hurry up, Malfoy’s getting trashed we might miss the fight” An 8th year hufflepuff said running past Harry.
Harry was always known as someone who does NOT stop to think, and true to himself, Harry ran leaving his friends in the hallways. They yelled after him, but he didn’t care. Draco was in trouble.
