The curse of being charming

Sirius Black is a 17 year old model and also the son of 2 very wealthy people. Orion and Walburga, his parents, are the proud owners of a very big clothing brand in France. Orion thinks Sirius could learn much from the meetings he has to go on for his job, so occasionally he and sometimes Regulus have to go on a business trip with his parents. Today is a day like that. Though it isn’t just a meeting this time. It’s actually a very big event in Spain. About money and locations and new ideas and god knows what other shit Sirius has to sit through, he’s already bored just thinking about it.

At the moment he is staring out of the window from the limousine he is sitting in. Music is blasting out of his ear pods, (“Turn that crap down or I’ll make you deaf myself before your music does!” His mother had yelled at him multiple times already). He actually doesn’t mind that he has to go on this trip. It could be fun. He could make new friends, learn a new language, see more culture, maybe even see a pretty boy to entertain himself with…

Their private driver stops the car next to a very big Spanish house, snapping Sirius out his thoughts. He supposes this is the house where the big event is gonna happen, since he sees parked cars everywhere. He steps out of the limousine and sees the beautiful villa more clearly. It is gorgeous, there are flowers all over and the grass is mowed tightly.

His parents step out too, “You are gonna behave, alright. No funny tricks or you’re in serious trouble. This event is super important and you are not gonna ruin it, understand?” his mother says.

“Yeah yeah,” Sirius answers fast with not a single care in the world. The business just doesn’t interest him as much as the beaches and pools and the ice creams do.

His father, mother and him walk inside where a kind looking man is greeting people. Sirius recognises him as Fleamont, his father's biggest rival and also the boss of the company in Spain.

“Welcome, Orion. Good afternoon, Walburga,” the man says nicely.

“Hello, Fleamont,” Orion says, his tone is more cold than friendly.

“And who do we have here?” Fleamont asks Sirius, totally ignoring Orion's mean tone.

“Sirius,” he says while holding his hand out for a handshake, and Fleamont does the same.

His mother nudges him sharply with her elbow.

“I mean, Sirius Black,” he sees his mother acting out in the corner of his eyes, “Sir.” He adds fast.

Fleamont laughs gently, “There is no need to call me sir, Sirius. You can just call me Monty.”

Sirius grins at him, “Will do, Monty.” And the man smiles brightly back. Whatever his parents said about the boss of the company in Spain already looks like a big fat lie. Sirius likes the man already.

They walk further in the house, only stopping at a big wooden door. Orion leans over Sirius and whispers, “Don’t you even dare ruin this,” with the coldest tone Sirius has ever heard him use. Before he can shake off the uneasy feeling his father gave him, his mother opens the door and greetings are being thrown all over the place.

There are at least 100 people in the room in the big hall, all chatting and talking with serious looks on their faces. In the middle of the hall there is one very large table with glasses of water and some cookies on it, and chairs around it.

“Sirius Black, come over here boy!” He turns and sees an old man who he has never seen in his life wave at him. The man stands close to a table with a name tag that says Slughorn H. on it.

Sirius signs and decides he is just gonna have to suck this shit up, if he chooses to do what is expected of him, he might as well do it better then amazing. So, he sets his shoulders, puts a charming grin on his face and walks over to the man with confidence in his strut.

“Bonjour monsieur, I’m sorry I didn’t see you before, lots of people here right?” Sirius says.

“That’s alright, Sirius, it happens to me lots of times. I’m not as young as I used to be.”

“Nonsense, you barely look a day over 106,” Sirius jokes.

Slughorn laughs, “A sense of humor and a good businessman, the world should fear you, Sirius Black.”

“Well, under no circumstances I would be any greater than the big and successful Slughorn.”

“I can add ‘charming’ to the list as well, apparently.”

“What can I say, I’m a man of many talents.”

Slughorn laughs again. “You never fail to amaze me, Sirius.”

(When did he ever even amaze this man before?)

“I’ve heard many things about you already, I have to say,” the older man admits.

“Only good things I hope,” Sirius says while playfully lifting one eyebrow.

“Of course, only good things can come out of the son of Orion and Walburga.”

Sirius laughs politely, “True, true. So for what land do you work, Mister Slughorn?”

“England. Your parents France, I suppose?”

“Indeed. But sir, you have made me curious now, have you heard any other things about me?” Nothing is wrong with a little curiosity in a conversation, right? He has to be here for a trillion boring hours anyway, why not find out some secrets in the meantime?

“I heard that you are accepted for multiple model jobs here in Spain. That must be very fun!”

“Yeah, I’m really happy I get to do it. Makes you feel pretty, you know.”

“You tell me, son,” Slughorn laughs.

“Got something else on me, sir?”

“I don’t think I’m supposed to tell you already, but your parents have a big surprise planned for you.”

“And what is that surprise, I might ask.”

“I’ve heard that your parents are going to pass the company to you very soon. I’m very proud of you for that Sirius, at such a young age too, that’s extremely impressive!”

Sirius is sure his brain got an error. He is doing what now? He has never heard something about taking over the company before, no one has talked to him about anything.

“Oh, did they say that?” He asks. Behind his eyes anger is building up. He can’t believe his parents. Only they would pull this shit. Well, if they can play this without following the rules, Sirius can too. He didn’t wanna come anyways, and now he can make his parents regret ever taking him along.

“They look so proud of you, Sirius. You have to see their face when talking about it!”

Sirius chuckles and says, “Yeah well, being a good actor runs in the family.”

Slughorn’s face changes and he looks shocked, “W-what did you say? Sorry, I think I misheard.” He gives an awkward chuckle.

At that same moment Fleamont goes to sit down at the very big table and everyone follows.

Sirius looks at the man with a grin, “You heard me. No one is perfect and a good example is my parents,” he looks over at the table and then gives the man a pat on his shoulder, “I think the meeting is gonna start, au revoir monsieur. It was nice talking with you.” And he salutes the man like a sailor.

Sirius smiles to himself when sitting in between his parents.

“Why that grin, put it away,” his father orders.

“I think the lovely Slughorn over there would like to admire it just a little longer.”

His parents look at Slughorn and he is staring right back, shocked and confused.

His father signs and his mother rolls her eyes at Sirius. Yeah the grin is definitely gonna stay.

“Good afternoon folks,” Monty says, “I hope your trips went easy, no one lost his luggage right?” he says only half joking. “My adorable wife Effie has baked some cookies for all of you and has put water for everyone since it’s very hot today.”

A round of thanks is said. Monty flashes that kind smile from before, “Don’t thank me, thank Effie later when you see her.” Light laughs are heard. A few moments later he claps in his hands, “But now the business stuff-“

Sirius tunes out everything that is being said after this. After a good hour of staring at the hair of a weird looking woman sitting in front of him, Sirius’ gaze slides over to the amazing smelling cookies. No one would mind if he would just take one, right? He slowly grabs one without making any sound. As he bites into it he hears his father say, “-My son will make the decision then.”

Sirius chokes on his cookie.

He goes into a coughing fit and his whole face is red. When he finally can breathe normally again he says, “I’m doing what?” He tuned out the whole conversation, he has absolutely no idea what he has to decide or what the meeting was even about. He looks around the table, begging for someone to explain, but he only catches Monty trying very hard not to laugh.

A man, Dumbledore says the name tag, answers him calmly, “You can make the decision about in what land we built the new company’s building on.”

Sirius' mouth falls open, “What?! I’m 17, I’m not even legally working here!” He says in total shock.

His mother’s cold eyes land on him. “Nobody cares about that. You just have to pick a land, not that hard.”

“Not that hard?! I’m picking in what land the business continues and in what land it doesn’t have a chance, I think that’s rather a hard decision to make.”

Monty speaks up, “Orion, it is totally fine if Sirius doesn’t want to-“

His father cuts him off very arrogantly. “Potter, I do not care what my son wants, he has to do whatever orders that I give him.”

“He’s 17, let him stay a kid if he wants-”

“I told you that I don’t care what he wants. If everybody did what they wanted we wouldn’t be sitting here, would we?”

Monty’s smile isn’t anywhere to be seen, and his face you can describe with 1 word. Pure disgust.

Everyone in the meeting room is dead silent. It is well known that Fleamont and Orion can’t get along, though no one knows why that is, but it’s still common sense that you stay out of their arguments and silent wars. The most wise choice is to not even look at them or breathe in their direction. Of course, Sirius has never made a wise choice in his life.

“Well, I’m not going to do that. You can look for another son to lead the company later.”

Walburga’s mask of being the ‘perfect leader’ drops for a single second before she acts like nothing is wrong. He laughs, “Yeah not so good at keeping secrets are you, mother?”

“How dare you say that in front of everyone,” his mother hisses. She harshly grabs Sirius’ arm and her nails dig into his skin. “You are going to regret ever being born when we are home-“

“Alright!” Monty is suddenly standing next to Sirius and pulls him back out of Walburga’s reach. “Let’s take a 15 minute break.” He says kindly, though his eyes are filled with rage and fixed on Orion and Walburga.

As everyone quietly leaves the room, Monty puts his hand on Sirius’ back and leads him out to the hall.

Sirius looks down to the ground, a bit ashamed that an adult just saved him out of a conversation from his parents. But he is grateful anyway. “Thank you. You didn’t have to do that though, I could have handled it myself-“

“You didn’t have to.”

Sirius looks up at him and is greeted with soft eyes and a friendly smile. To be honest, Sirius has never thought about it like that, having the opportunity to just not deal with it.

“Look,” Monty places his hand on Sirius’ shoulder, “I’ve known your parents for a very long time. Orion and I lived in the same town, went to the same middle school, the same highschool, and the same university. I know how he is and how he can be. Honestly, it surprises me that this is the first big meeting you're attending.”

“You noticed that this was my first?” Sirius says, slightly panicking.

“The way you walked in my house said it all, but then in the room it was like you were the boss, your acting is very impressive I got to say.”

Sirius smiles, “Learned from the best,” he says, obviously meaning Orion and Walburga with their fakeness.

Monty laughs and shakes his head, “You are so different from your parents, I like you.”

Sirius is sure his heart is glowing. He always gets the forced, ‘You are so much like your parents’, and he hates every word of the sentence. But the new, ‘You are so different from your parents’, has a lovely sound to it, Sirius wants to cherish that sound forever and have it engraved in his eardrums.

Monty looks around to see if anyone is listening and then asks, “Do you know your way to your house from here?”

“Yeah, why?”

Montly leans closer and whispers, “Go to the bathroom on the second floor and open the third door to the right, I think the window there is big enough for you to climb through and leave this boring meeting. The front door is packed with people, you can never escape from there without someone seeing you.”

He sees the mischief in the older man’s eyes, and Sirius is living for it.

Sirius laughs brightly, “My parents were so wrong about you,”

“Yeah well, they are wrong about a lot of things,” Monty says, giving Sirius a grin. “Now go and do something now that you're still young and not stuck at a desk.”

“Thank you, I owe you, Monty!” Sirius says while running to the stairs for the second floor. He is Monty so grateful because if he’s honest, escaping this shit was already on his mind in the car on the way here.

He’s on the second floor now and sees the door that Monty meant. He opens it and sees that the window is smaller than he imagined, but it has to work. Sirius goes to stand on the closed toilet seat and opens the window. He looks down and realizes that the small window isn’t the only thing that he had imagined wrong. This is very high, higher than he was at his mother’s birthday party, and that says a lot.

He closes his eyes for a second and takes a deep breath.

Sirius opens his eyes again, he swings one leg out the window and holds onto the wall with one hand, the other still clinging hard to the side of the toilet. Just as his other leg is outside of the bathroom his phone rings. The sound surprises him and he loses grip from his hands, and his feet slide off the little brick they stood on.

He falls right out the second story window and lands face first in the bushes of the driveway.

“Fuck,” He groans in pain. Of course falling out of the window would happen to him. If this is God’s way of showing karma for escaping his parents, Sirius is gonna become an atheist.

He groans while standing up and brushes the dirt off of his fancy clothes he was forced to wear. When he looks up to start walking away and gaslight himself this never happened, Sirius is facing the most handsome man he has ever met.

The man is staring right back, but probably not for the same reasons.

Sirius looks at the window he just fell out of, then the flat piece of bushes that he ruined by landing in, and then back at the boy.

“Yeah uhm, it’s a long story.”

The boy just keeps staring. After a few seconds he says, “Did you just literally fall out of a bathroom window? You know there is something called a door, right?”

Sirius rolls his eyes, “I had to escape my parents and the boring meeting, so the bathroom window was the best option.”

“Your parents are part of the meeting? Why did you escape them?”

“Why don’t you tell me your name first before I trauma dump on you, pretty boy?”

The boy looks down and smiles, “It’s Remus. What’s yours?”

“Sirius.”

“Does Sirius have a last name?”

“Black. Sirius Black.”

“That explains a lot,” Remus says while smiling like he knows something Sirius doesn’t.

“What does that mean?”

“I know Monty very well and he was talking about how much he dreads that Orion and Walburga Black were coming. I guess you wanted to be away from them too.”

“Okay, true I have nothing to say about that-“

“Your lip is bleeding, Sirius” Remus says out of nowhere.

Sirius’ fingers touch his lip and blood is on them. He supposes it isn’t that crazy that something is bleeding when he just fell two floors down.

Remus just grabs his lower arm and says, “I’ll fix it, come back inside, Sirius.”

Sirius has a billion reasons to say no. Remus is a stranger. His parents who he ran away from are inside. So many people who are inside know who he is and he could get in trouble.

But he still follows the gorgeous boy inside through the back door.

“Monty couldn’t suggest this way instead of the window?”

Remus chuckles, “He likes to mess with everyone, but I’m sure that this time he just wanted to be part of a failed James Bond mission.”

Sirius gasps dramatically, “You think it failed?!”

“Was falling out the window a part of the plan?”

“…No. But the mission technically didn’t fail because my side quest for my vacation was meeting a pretty Spanish guy and that definitely didn’t go wrong.”

“I’ve known you for less than two minutes, and yet you've flirted with me more than you've shown any embarrassment about me seeing everything that has happened,” Remus says while he keeps walking and leading Sirius to somewhere. Sirius looks over at his face and sees that Remus’ cheeks are slightly red.

They stop walking and end up in a bathroom, (another one then the one Sirius fell out of) and Remus is grabbing things and opening cabinets. “Here I’ll clean the wound.”

“You live here?” Sirius asks, unable to shove his curiosity down.

“Sort of. James lives here, but I’m here everyday.”

“Who’s James?”

“The son of Effie and Monty. He’s really nice, I bet you’ll like him.” Remus comes closer and sprays something on a little cloth. His right hand is cupping Sirius’ jaw and with his other hand he is gently swiping the blood away with the cloth from Sirius’ lips.

Sirius is watching Remus, if you look closely he has freckles under his eyes and on his nose. Remus’ eyes are beautiful brown, they make Sirius think of hazel nuts.

Remus looks up and locks eyes with him. Sirius feels his cheeks go red at the intense staring.

“Hey Remus, do you know where-”

They both look at the doorway where a boy with blond hair is standing. Remus drops his hands from Sirius’ face fast and Sirius takes a step backwards.

The boy looks at the two of them and yells, “James! Remus has found another stray for your parents to take in!”

Remus is smiling at the boy, “No Pete, this is just Sirius.”

Pete walks into the room, “Welcome to your new home ‘just Sirius’, you are gonna love it here!”

Remus laughs and another boy walks into the room too. “Oh! You’re Sirius! Don’t worry Peter, he is already adopted by my dad.”

Sirius is extremely confused. “I’m what now?”

“You're my brother now, hi! I’m James!”

“Nice to meet you?” Sirius says back unsure.

“Come, let me show you your new room,” James says and he is already walking. Sirius looks around and sees that everyone is following.

He ends up walks next to Peter and whispers, “Is he serious?”

“No, you are.”

Sirius isn’t sure in what insane situation he landed in, but everything is better than his parents so he just doesn’t think much about it.

They go inside a big room. There is a bed in the middle with football posters on the walls. On the ground are laying 2 extra mattresses. Sirius guesses that those are for Remus and Peter to sleep there.

James sits on his bed and smiles, “Okay don’t look so panicked Sirius, I was joking. But my dad really did tell me about you, he told me you are a really nice person.”

“Thank you. I’m sorry, what am I doing here?” Sirius says, totally confused.

Peter says, “Becoming our friend. If you want to, of course.”

Sirius just looks at the 3 boys staring at him. They look really kind, and they have good humor. Plus he wouldn’t mind getting to know Remus more. Sirius knows he’s a big flirt, but he’s also not blind. Remus is absolutely stunning, and Sirius likes to mess a bit with people. It’s just a very big win for him that that person is incredibly handsome. Sure, he is a bit attracted to Remus, and he is totally his type, but it’s just for fun the flirting.

“Yeah, I would love to, you all seem very cool.”

Remus chuckles, “I would want to say the same for you but the way you introduced yourself took away those privileges.”

“Omg Remus tell us!” James says excitedly.

Sirius covers his face with his hands, “No! This is the worst first impression I’ve ever made! I’m not normally like that- okay no that’s a lie, but I swear I’m not proud of it!”

Remus sits down on his mattress, “He tried to escape the meeting of your parents by climbing through your bathroom window on the second floor, James. And then he fell out of it and landed face first into the bushes. In that same minute he called me pretty, flirted his ass off, trauma dumped on me, and bled on the ground.”

“Wow Sirius, how charming," Peter says.

“A real gentleman,” James adds while laughing.

“No, wait I can explain. I tried to escape because-”

And Sirius explains the whole story. There were many laughs exchanged between the young boys, and also a few sorry looking faces. Sirius and the boys talked all night long about everything and nothing at all. Sirius had friends in France, but never like this. He knows Peter, James and Remus for like 4 hours and he feels more home then he ever has in his own house. Everything feels so much easier with them, so much more comfortable. He doesn’t feel like he’s being weird or that secretly everyone hates him here.

He has learned that Peter is the funny friend, the one to make everyone laugh with his little comments.

James is the kind, caring, ‘mom’ friend. He was saying sweet things to Sirius about the parent situation, Sirius was actually really touched by this. He didn’t know he needed to hear those things, and James said them anyway.

Remus is the sarcastic one, he looks very put together, but Sirius can see that that’s just an act. If he looks very good he can see Remus’ lips curl up when James compliments his hair, or when Peter made a joke about Sirius’ confused face when they all walked in.

Sirius likes looking at Remus, he is like a puzzle that Sirius is eager to solve, the urge tingling under his fingertips like fireworks. He wants to know what Remus thinks, wants to know what Remus his secrets are.

They are all laying on James’ bed, Peter his head laying on Sirius’ knees. Remus his head is resting on James’ chest.

Sirius lets out a little laugh, “I started this day by thinking about how horrible it will be today, and here I am in the bedroom of my parents enemy’s son having the time of my life.”

“If this is your version of time of your life, you’ve clearly never experienced a game night at the Potters,” Remus says.

James gasps very loudly and abruptly sits up, almost making Remus fall out of bed. “Sirius, you should join the game night! It’s in 3 days, you have to come!”

Sirius sits up too, very slowly so that he doesn’t hurt Peter. “I would love it too! But are your parents okay with that, though?”

“If I asked my parents to adopt you right now, they would totally say yes without hesitation.”

“Your mom hasn’t even met me yet?”

“Exactly,” James says. Sirius can hear the grin James has on his face. "Sirius, if you want you can stay over tonight too, it’s already very late. You can sleep in my bed if you don’t mind.”

Sirius smiles very brightly. He loves James so much already and he doesn’t even know that much about him. He just feels right with him. It’s different then with Remus. With him Sirius wants to know every single detail about Remus, every inch of him and every cell of his skin. But with James he feels like he already knows enough. Sirius loves James already before knowing everything, and he’s sure that knowing everything will make that love even more stronger.

“I don’t mind at all. Thanks James!”

“No problem, mate!” James says while smiling back with equal brightness.

As they all lay in their beds, (Remus and Peter on their mattresses), James and Peter fall asleep very quickly. Sirius notices that James snores in his sleep, it makes him smile. James is such a comfortable person to be around, he can’t really explain it but James makes him feel safe.

Sirius goes to lay down at the foot end of the bed, giving James more space since his arm was laying on Sirius’ chest.

“Remus? Are you awake?”

“Yeah,” he whispers back.

“I can’t sleep either, I’m way too hyper.”

“I can do something about that,” Remus tells him slowly.

Sirius turns to Remus fast with big eyes. “You- what?”

Remus rolls his eyes playfully, “You have such a dirty mind. No, I meant that we could smoke outside. Like, doing something to drop the energy you still have lingering.”

Sirius laughs and says jokingly, “Are you sure? Because that other offer I also wouldn’t have declined.”

“Alright take it slow sweetheart, let’s not forget the intro you made, no flirting can fix that red flag.” Remus says back with the same tone Sirius had while talking to him.

‘Ah, you fucker!” Sirius laughs and slaps him on the chest with the back of his hand softly.

“Well, this fucker is sharing his cigarets with you, so you better be nice.”

They laugh and walk out the room into the pitch-black hall. “It’s very dark here,” Sirius says. Out of habit he immediately tries to hold on to something. He finds Remus’ arm and just clings to that.

“What are you doing?” he whispers.

“Holding on to something, of course.”

“Why?”

“Because it's dark.”

“Yeah I know, but why hold on to me? Why not on the wall?”

“Can the wall lead me outside?”

“Oh just say you are scared of the dark, Sirius.” He can practically hear Remus rolling his eyes playfully.

“I’m not! I just… don’t like it.”

“You’re scared.”

“No, I’m not!”

Remus is laughing, "Yeah, you are.”

“No that’s not true-”

“Shh, keep your mouth shut, I hear something,” Remus says, suddenly standing still.

“Or what? You aren’t gonna give me a cig-” Sirius’ voice gets cut off by Remus’ warm hand on his mouth. This actually makes Sirius shut it, in some miraculous way.

Sirius looks intensely at Remus, the only light that invades the hall now is the sudden moonlight that falls through the window. It makes Remus’ eyes sparkle in a beautiful way, like moondust is dancing in his irises.

After a while Remus signs in relief and drops his hand, meeting Sirius’ eyes. He looks a bit confused, “What are you looking at?” He asks.

Sirius was never the one to control his feelings or thoughts. He always says whatever he thinks, without hesitating. It’s a curse and a gift at the same time. The gift is that his brain works faster than his mouth, when he needs to lie his brain already has a lie ready for his mouth to tell. The curse, well, it is this.

“It looks like your eyes have moondust in them, and your freckles are the craters of the moon.”

It looks like Remus' brain is having an error. Sirius can see at least 6 different emotions passing on his face.

“I- Sirius, what?”

“Actually, you in general make me think of the moon,” Sirius continues his line of thought, “Would you mind being called Moony? I think the nickname really fits you.”

“Okay Sirius, how do I even react to that?”

A smile grows on his face, “You don’t have to, I’ll just call you Moony and steal all your cigarettes and see how you’ll react to that.”

Remus laughs quietly and shakes his head while looking down. “You really are a unique person, has anyone told you that before?”

“Not in the way you just did, and I wouldn’t mind if you keep being the only one,” He responds while holding the eye contact, and his tone being flirty.

“Alright, let’s go outside before Monty catches us, sweetheart,” Remus says joking along with Sirius, his voice also flirty, but it’s different. It’s lower, it’s charming, it’s addicting.

Sweetheart, Sweetheart, Sweetheart.

Sirius loves the ring of that in his ears.

He follows Remus outside and accepts the cigarette that he offers.

“Thank you, Moony.” Sirius looks at Remus for an annoyed sign or an eyeroll for the nickname. Instead he gets a generous smile. Remus thinks Sirius can’t see it, it is very tiny, just the corners of his lips turn up.

Sirius’ heart flutters a bit, and he feels happy. He is very fucking happy that he fell out of the window and followed the pretty boy inside. Never has he ever been more thankful for the fact that his actions have consequences.
