Chapter 3

Severus mindlessly stabbed a potato on his plate with his fork, toying with the food on his plate.

He already ate a lot by his standards, which was very little, but he didn’t want to waste food.

He reluctantly brought the potato up to his mouth, chomping on it while daydreaming.

It was a habit he had gotten in second year. It was easy to imagine a life where nothing was wrong and he wanted to live a life where nothing went wrong. Unfortunately, that wasn’t how the world works.

Severus sighed, bringing another potato up to his mouth. The house elves made baked potatoes every year but he never seemed to get enough of it.

Poppy loved potatoes. She always talked about how she wanted a son who grew a potato farm. Unfortunately, she wasn’t married and she wasn’t as fertile.

Severus shook his head, getting rid of the depressive thoughts. Poppy was happy as she was and he wouldn’t ruin that.

As he quietly ate, there was a loud chatter as the people in Slytherin started gossiping about what would happen this year. What the Marauders would do and how they would do it.

Severus groaned. The world seemed to revolve around the Marauders, it irritated him.

In his episode of hating on the four Gryffindors, he didn’t notice another boy slide down on the seat next to him.

“Snape, you look like you’re about murder someone.” The mysterious person had chuckled out.

Severus looked at the Slytherin.

Dirty brown hair, dashing blue eyes, typical Victorian pale skin.

Evan Rosier. The only other person in Hogwarts that Severus could have a proper conversation with.

Severus would never admit, but he thought of the pureblood as a friend.

Evan sheepishly took Severus’ plate.

“Rosier. Give me back my food before you’re the one I’m thinking of murdering..” Friend or not, Severus Snape is a snarky snake. And snakes need their food.

Evan grinned, white teeth glinting.

“Missed me?”

Severus scoffed but a small smile crept up his face.

“Yes, you moron. Who else knows of all my plans to conquer the potion-making world while terrorizing kids?”

Rosier chuckled again, his eyes softening.

“True, true. I couldn’t wait to talk to you during the break. I just… wanted your company.”

Severus pursed his lips, shyly nodding his head.

“I… I felt the same way.”

Evan and Severus shared a moment of silence together, looking at each other with adoration.

Friendship that’s beyond friendship.

At the Gryffindor table, James whispered and theorized with Sirius while Remus sighed and starter the chocolate pudding.

Peter was busy eating.

“Psst, Pads, do you think that slimy git is up to something?” James had whispered with a mouthful of pork ribs.

“Of course he’s up to something, Prongs! There’s no way Rosier and him would talk to each other if they weren’t up to something!” Sirius grumbled with chicken in his mouth.

Peter had perked up at the two boys’ words, turning to look at the Slytherin table.

“What prank should we do? Maybe we could ask the house-elves for a bucket of kitchen oil to dump on Snivellus?” Sirius was truly brutal when it came to Severus Snape.

James grinned, throwing a thumbs-up.

“Brilliant, Pads!”

“I can ask the house-elves for the oil!” Peter squeaked out, ever so eager to help the two troublemakers in their mischief.

“Are you sure? We’ve just reached Hogwarts, isn’t it too early for a prank?” Remus, the sensible one, had a bad feeling in his gut.

Sirius and James looked at each other before beaming at Remus.

“Come on, Moony! It’ll be fun! It’s just oil and, considering how greasy his hair is, it probably won’t even make a difference!”

Remus opened his mouth but shut it. James and Sirius were his first friends. And they didn’t care that he was bitten by a werewolf. It was just a prank, it wouldn’t do anything to Snape.

“I guess it’s okay…”

Back at the Slytherin table, Severus sighed.

“Those Gryffindor idiots are up to something aren’t they.”

Evan looked over to the table full of the lions and nodded.

“Absolutely. How you always know that, I’ll never find out.”

Severus groaned again.

“You have to adapt to your surroundings.”

Evan smirked.

“Sounds like you know everything, Mr Half-Blood.”

Severus grinned back.

“You’re just mad you can’t beat me intellectually, Mr Pureblood.”

It was a part of their friendship. Making fun of their blood status.

They both snickered.

At the Gryffindor table, again, Sirius and James were discussing possible ideas of why the two Slytherins were together.

“Merlin’s beard, Prongs! Rosier’s made Snivellus smile and laugh!” Sirius had finally stopped eating and was now glaring daggers.

“What could possibly make Snivellus laugh, much less smile?” James huffed, taking off his glasses to wipe the steam on his glasses.

Remus buried his face in his hands, agonizing over his best friends’ situation.

He smiled a little at the thought of Severus.

The Slytherin was actually a rather good library buddy and helped him with his potion assignments.

He’d say they were on good terms.

Peter curiously looked at Remus.

“Remus, what’s wrong?”

The werewolf shook his head.

“Nothing, Wormy. Just thinking about how this year will go.”

Remus saw Severus turn around and wave discreetly at him.

The meek boy grinned. He had a Slytherin friend.
