Emmeline
“Em?” A voice says from the other side of the table but Emmeline doesn’t hear it. “Emmeline Sophia Vance!”
Emmeline jumps a little at the sound of her best friend, Amelia Bones, somewhat yelling her name. Amelia does this all the time, and Emmeline hates it more than anything. It always scares the hell out of her.
They’re sat in the great hall for breakfast, though its pretty late in the morning since Amelia decided she didn’t want to wake up this morning, which is fair enough but Emmeline was hungry but she isn't allowed to go down to meals without her.
“Christ, Lia!” Emmeline exaggerates, “You scared the hell out of me. Don’t yell at me like that when I’m not listening.”
Amelia gives her a look that Emmeline can’t decipher is a ‘are you stupid’ look or a ‘should have been listening’ look. It's probably a bit of both, its not unusual for Emmeline to receive one of those looks from the red-haired girl.
“How else am I supposed to get your attention if not for yelling?” Amelia says with attitude she usually uses with her twin brother, Edgar.
Emmeline just stares at her, silently asking what she wants. She listens as Amelia drones on about Hestia Jones.
Hestia is another one of their friends, probably the only one stopping the group from doing something catastrophic to Snapes little gang of hooligans, who the entire group despises. The Slytherin group never actually did anything to any of them, but they still don't like them.
However, Amelia fancies Hestia and its all she talks about. Honestly, Emmeline could go as far as to say her best friend is in love with the girl.
None of them know if Hestia fancies Amelia back, but if she does, she’s good at hiding it. Whereas Amelia isn’t, constantly embarrassing herself around their friend. Emmeline finds it comedic, watching as her friend trips over her words, stutters and on the odd occasion, falls flat on her face (Emmeline helped her up after laughing for god knows how long).
“Anyways, enough go me, what were you thinking about?” Amelia asks as if she doesn’t already know the answer.
“He definitely likes him. I mean like I always say, I don’t know him personally but I’ve seen the way he looks at him. You should see it Lia, its adorable but also heartbreaking because Black doesn’t look at him the same way.” Emmeline blabbers on.
The black-haired girl is very observant, and has gone to finding people who clearly likes someone else and watches so she can be the first to know when they’re dating. But also because she's just bored and needs something interesting to do during meals.
Her current targets and Remus Lupin and Sirius Black. Emmeline can see that Lupin fancies Black but can’t tell if Black reciprocates the feelings, but she’s working on it. Though its becoming more and more difficult because Black and Lupin seem to be growing more distant.
Amelia laughs like she always does when Emmeline talks about this. Amelia is usually the one who talks for England but when it comes to couples, Emmeline has all the information. The rest of their friends always go to her when they need to know about couples.
“Have you noticed anyone else who fancies someone?” Amelia asks innocently. “I wanna watch them too.”
Emmeline knows she shouldn’t tell her friend, just like Emmeline, Amelia has a habit of trying to be cupid. Not that she’s bad at it, she just ends up interfering with people she shouldn’t, or people she doesn’t even know.
“Crouch and Rosier, that one is so painfully obvious that I reckon everyone knows they’re into each other, except themselves of course.” Emmeline begins. “Meadowes and McKinnon, Lestrange and Rookwood and Pettigrew and Sybill.”
Emmeline does feel as though its a little weird that she knows this about people she’s never spoken to before, but she also loves the fact she does. She gets to watch love happen and its her favourite thing.
“And then obviously the most obvious one, Potter and Evans.” She finishes, “That one clearly being unrequited.”
“Of course it is, Evans is lesbian.” Amelia adds on to what Emmeline had said. “Like you.”
Emmeline thinks for a second, thinking back to the one conversation she’s ever had with Evans. Emmeline remembers her saying something about her sexuality. It was a very random conversation, at the time Emmeline thought she fancied Evans so wanted to know if she was into girls.
“No, she’s bixexual.” Amelia looks over at her with a questioning expression. “She told me last year, we were paired together once in potions and it just came up in conversation.”
Amelia just nods in response. The two girls then remember they have to go meet the rest of their friends in the courtyard. Its where they always hang out in the summer, around a tree close to the black lake.
They both gather their things and make their way to where the rest of the group is. Amelia taking way too long to walk claiming that she now has a 'food baby' from eating too much. It's her own fault though.
Once they get out there, they’re greeted by the group: Edgar Bones, Hestia Jones, Xenophelius Trelawney, Benjy Fenwick and Caradoc Dearborn.
Edgar was the one who introduced them to Caradoc. Caradoc is a Slytherin, who Edgar had become friends with a couple years prior. Not long later though, they had began dating. Well, Hestia and Emmeline suspect they had been dating way before, but never mention it.
They all love Caradoc, he’s not exactly the nicest, but he’s nice to them so they don’t mind. He also hates Snapes gang just as much as they do, so bonus points.
“You two took so long to get here.” Benjy complains like he always does. Emmeline finds it infuriating how one person can complain about so much. His complaining ranges from him being cold to someone eating in a weird way.
“Em was people gazing again.” Amelia says before Emmeline gets the chance to speak. The others stare at Emmeline, waiting for her to tell them who fancied who.
The girl sighs, “Lupin likes Black.”
“Which Black?” Xenophelius asks. “Older Black or younger Black?”
“Older Black of course.” Amelia butts in again. Anyone else and Emmeline would probably strangle them, but not Amelia. “In what world would lupin fancy his best friends little brother.”
“Well I don’t know!” Xenophelius exclaims, throwing his arms up dramatically. “People surprise you, you know. Like when Ed started dating Doc. We weren’t expecting it.”
They all just stare at him. After Edgar had introduced his boyfriend to them, they had all noticed they were more than friends. They were really touchy and Caradoc would hysterically laugh at the most unfunniest jokes Edgar would tell.
“Sorry Xeno but how on earth could you not tell that those two fancied each other but you can tell Crouch and Rosier do?” Hestia asks. “They were no different.”
Xenophelius just scrunches his eyebrows in faux anger. “Leave me alone, okay? I was younger then, I didn’t even know how to tie my own laces.”
They all laugh. “Xen your saying it like you were five, you were fourteen.”
Their friend just waves them off, allowing them to fall into comfortable conversation. Talking about god knows what, laughing and harmless bickering. Emmeline loves this, just being with her friends but her focus changes to someone who walks outside with their friends. Someone Emmeline is so desperate to make sure is okay.
