Chapter 8
Multiple layers of crap. This is so much more than what she expected. Why didn’t Nicky tell her what her uncle did for a living? “Crap.” She must have voiced her feelings because her brother gave her a funny look just as she stood to greet the detectives coming in.
Danny, most likely a detective, came to a stop in front of her. “You…you’re Nicky’s friend. What are doing here?” His partner stopped behind him to the side.
If they were back in their neighborhood, no one would have even thought to pick up Little Tony without fear of reprisal. As it was…she may just be creating a rift between herself and her girlfriend. “I’m Anthony Assante Jr’s temporary legal representative. Mind telling me what you’re holding him for?” Tricia didn’t move from her stance and saw the moment when Reagan looked between them and came to a decision.
“Temporary?” The other detective in the room asked, and Tricia merely nodded at the question in the world.
Tricia wouldn’t have stopped the slide into the coldness of her raising even if she had wanted to. “Yes. Donaldo Ricketts is on his way here. Now…are you doing to tell me why you are holding my client, or can we go?”
Nicky’s uncle didn’t look away as he took the seat in front of her and her brother and motioned for her to take a seat. His partner sat beside him. His partner was the one to break the silence. “I’m Detective Baez, Miss?”
Tricia looks between the two of them before deciding on a path. She gives them her best shark tooth smile. “Tricia Assante.” She pauses for a moment before looking straight at Danny. “What do you have on my brother?”
“We have photos of him leaving the club with the deceased.” Detective Baez answers and Tricia throws a glare at her brother who just gives her a sheepish cringe in return. “His DNA is on her. We have him tied up with a bow. Now all we need is a confession.”
Tricia knows her laugh is grating when she leans back in her chair and shares a glance at Little Tony. “Seriously? That’s all you’ve got?”
“There’s more that we’ll show in trial.” Detective Baez says, and Tricia just glances at the other detective. “They will convict him.”
Tricia kept the smirk in place. “I highly doubt that, Detective.” A knock on the window has the two detectives turning, and Tricia placing a hand on Tony’s arm. The family always comes through for their own.
Danny is the one to go to the door and yank it open. “What is it?” He tried to keep his voice down, but it wasn’t nearly quiet enough for them in the room.
“Anthony Assante Jr. is to be let go, detective.” The man behind the door demanded, and Tricia went ahead and gave Tony a squeeze of her hand.
“What are you talking about?” Danny demanded with his voice dropping lower so that it was hard to catch all of the words.
“They just found the weapon, Reagan. A witness says a blonde dude dumped it an hour ago. Assante’s been in a cell for two.” The man shook his head. “Cut him loose.”
