When the Green Meets the Blue
"Shit!" A young brunette swore as she tripped over something and fell on the ground. She glanced behind her to see a group of walkers. Ten, maybe fifteen of them were walking towards her and growling. The stood up and broke into a run again. Her heart was pounding and her legs were burning. She was running out of breath but she kept running. She had to if she wanted to survive. She was running for her life. She was running for her family.
Her family.
It's been more than an hour since they separated. She had no way of knowing if they were still alive. She couldn't think about that now, though. She had to focus on her survival.
She looked back. The walkers were further than before. She had a chance to survive and -
"No. No, no, no, no, no." She stopped in shock, terrified.
There were more walkers right in front of her. She counted seven, eight. She wasn't sure she'd be able to kill even one of them. Eight walkers at once? She didn't stand a chance.
The brunette closed her eyes and thought about her family.
Mom.
Nick.
She would never see them again. Tears filled her eyes and she didn't fight them. She heard the growling getting closer and closer. She could almost feel the putrefactive bodies surrounding her. And then -
Bang, bang, bang. Bang.
The girl fell to the ground at the sound, still too scared to open her eyes. More shots. Dead bodies falling to the ground. And then there was quiet.
The brunette opened her eyes. A grinning blonde walked towards her. She was dressed in black, armed up with guns and knives and there was blood all over her clothes.
And she looked beautiful.
"Hey there, gorgeous," the blonde said with a wide smile.
The other girl blinked a few times, confused. She looked around and saw dead bodies all over the ground. She looked back at the short girl with blonde hair and a cheerful face.
"You're the one who killed all those walkers?" The brunette asked in disbelief.
The other girl raised her eyebrows, amused.
"Well, you're the one who got almost eaten by them."
The brunette frowned. She wasn't in a position to be angry but she hated when people made fun of her.
"Hey, I'm sure you had it under control," the blonde put her hands up, "I just couldn't resist impressing a pretty girl."
This was the perfect time to say thank you. The short girl did save her life after all, even if she seemed a little rude and annoying. Yet, instead of a simple thank you, the stupidest thing she could have said slipped from her mouth.
"Is that Australian accent?"
The blonde chuckled. "Don't even know my name and you're already hitting me with pick-up lines? And here I thought I'd be the flirt," she said with a wide smile.
"What? No. That wasn't... I didn't mean - It was - " The brunette sighed as she felt her face get red. "It was an actual question," she finished her sentence and looked at her feet.
"Relax," the blonde chuckled again, "I was kidding. I'm Elyza, by the way. Elyza Lex," the blonde offered her hand to the other girl.
"Alicia Clark," the brunette responded and accepted the hand, still a little red in her face. The blonde girl, Elyza, smiled and looked into Alicia's eyes. Vivid green eyes. Elyza always loved green eyes. Or maybe not always but she certainly loved them now.
Alicia smiled back and met Elyza's blue eyes for a moment before looking back down. She was sure she would have drowned in the ocean of blue if she kept looking.
She realized they were still holding hands. She cleared her throat and let go, trying not to blush again. Judging by the cocky grin on Elyza's face, she failed.
Alicia turned away from Elyza and took a few steps from the wall. Elyza took that as an opportunity to look over her body. And man, a hell of a body it was. Elyza bit her lip and continued examining. She realized too late that Alicia had turned back and was now looking at her with crossed arms and a stern look.
"What the hell do you think you're doing?" Alicia snapped.
Elyza, confident and calm as ever, smiled. " Just enjoying my view."
When Alicia kept opening and closing her mouth without saying anything, Elyza continued.
"So tell me, what is a pretty girl like you doing here all alone? Not sure if you've noticed, but the world's gone to shit. And those things," she gestured over the bodies around them, "are literally dying to get a taste of you." She looked over Alicia's whole body again. "Not that I could blame them for that one, though." She grinned again and bit her lip.
Alicia rolled her eyes and swallowed her sassy response. The girl did save her life a few minutes ago, the least she could do was be nice and honest. She took a deep breath to calm herself down before responding.
"I'm not alone. At least I wasn't before those stupid walkers appeared. We were looking for supplies with my family but then showed up and we got separated. I got stuck between two groups and, well, you know the rest. Now I have to find my family again."
Elyza nodded and followed Alicia away from the street. They walked in silence for a while, both lost in their thoughts.
"To answer your question," Elyza broke the silence and glanced at Alicia, "yes, it is."
Alicia gave her a blank look. "What is?"
"Australian accent," Elyza explained with a grin. "I still believe it was a pick-up line, though. And a pretty lame one, just so you know," she teased.
Alicia laughed, surprising both her and Elyza. "You're unbelievable," she shook her head.
"Too good to be true?" Elyza asked as she played Alicia's laugh over and over again in her head. Her laugh was light and contagious and Elyza loved it.
"You wish," Alicia rolled her eyes again. She felt a little bit more at ease after Elyza made her laugh and she was grateful for the distraction.
"Do you wanna hear about my other wishes, beautiful?" Elyza lowered her voice and averted her eyes to Alicia's lips as she smiled.
Alicia's heart skipped a beat when she imagined what Elyza's wishes might be.
No, she couldn't think about that. She wasn't even attracted to Elyza. She wasn't and yet she couldn't help but feel guilty thinking about someone other than Matt. It was stupid, she knew, the Matt had loved didn't exist anymore and it's been -
"Alicia, are you okay?" Elyza asked with concern and stopped Alicia's thoughts.
"What? Oh, yeah. Totally." She realized that she had stopped walking and had been staring at Elyza this whole time. "I was just... thinking about my family, you know," Alicia lied. "I need to find them." She started walking again Elyza followed.
Elyza knew that this was about something else than finding her family. Alicia was prone to blushing and it wasn't hard to see when she lied. She decided to let it pass. Everybody had something they'd rather not talk about. Elyza knew that better than anyone. It wasn't her place to ask. She barely knew the girl.
"Okay." She nodded. "We should probably come up with a plan to find them without getting eaten then. By the walkers I mean, the fun way of getting eating is fine by me," the blonde said with her typical grin.
"We?" Alicia questioned and completely ignored the other comment.
"Yeah. What kind of a date would I be if I didn't even escort my lady home, right? Besides, I wasted a lot of bullets to save that pretty ass of yours. If I let you die now, it would be for nothing."
"Thank you."
"Yeah, yeah."
"Wait." Alicia grabbed Elyza's arm and turned her to face her. "I mean it. Thank you. For saving my life, for choosing to help me find my family. I'd be dead without you," she said seriously. Elyza gulped and looked away, blinking to stop the tears forming in her eyes. She shook her head to get rid of the thoughts about the people she didn't save and turned back to Alicia. The girl was still watching her, wondering what's going on in Elyza's head.
"It's okay, really. Got nothing better to do, anyway," Elyza shrugged, hiding her guilt behind a smile. "Now come on, we have to find a place to spend the night. It's almost dark, it would be dangerous to spend the night outside. We'll go out to look for them first thing in the morning. I promise," she said as if she anticipated Alicia's protests.
And Alicia didn't disappoint. "No, I need to find them now. I can't go to sleep not knowing if they're alive," she complained.
"This is not a negotiation, Alicia. It's late and they will have to hide somewhere too. There's no way we can find them today, we would only get ourselves killed. Come on now, beautiful, I know a safe place not far from here."
"Okay," Alicia sighed after a while. She didn't like it but Elyza did have a point. Her family knew better than to wander around after dark. She just hoped they were somewhere safe.
Silence fell between the girls again for a few minutes as they walked through the streets.
"Hey, Elyza?"
"Yeah?"
"I'm not your lady."
"Not yet," Elyza grinned, "but wait till you see my place. I'm gonna make you dinner, candles all around the room, romantic music... We'll have a deep conversation and then we'll go to bed and go very deep-"
"OKAY, forget I said anything," Alicia interrupted her and rolled her eyes.
"Come on, cutie-pie. We both know you said that because you wanted to start a conversation with me." Elyza smiled at Alicia.
"Shut up," Alicia said but smiled back.
"Hey, don't be so rude. I saved your life!"
"Seriously? You're gonna use that against me?" Alicia narrowed her eyes.
"Well, it's true. But I could also use the fact that I'll provide you a nice place to sleep, or that I'll help you find your family..." Elyza teased.
"Okay, okay, I get it. I'm useless and you're my hero. Can you stop talking now?"
"Or the fact that I will feed you," Elyza ignored her, "or that I'm going to make you scream in-"
"Shut up!" Alicia whined.
"Give me something else to use my mouth on, then."
Alicia didn't have time to answer. They finally reached their destination - a huge house with a massive fence.
"Welcome to heaven, sweetheart. The best night of your life is about to begin," Elyza smiled smugly.
