Lunch was somewhat awkward. Or at least that’s what it felt like for Wednesday. She was weirdly quiet, not giving out her usual snarky and sassy remarks. No one was complaining. Yoko finally spoke to break the silence.
-We should assign roles., stated the girl.
-Roles?, frowned Ajax, confused.
-Yeah. Tasks and stuff., replied Yoko with a nod.
-Okay. Sure. What do you have in mind?, asked Bianca out of curiosity.
-Well, first we should definitely get a leader. Someone we will turn to for decision making. Important stuff. Someone who can handle it. I vote Enid., said Yoko instantly.
-I don’t think-, started Enid.
-Me too. I vote Enid., interrupted Ajax, raising his hand.
-Do I get a vote?, wondered Eugene.
-Of course you do., nodded Yoko.
-I vote Enid too., agreed Eugene with a slight smile.
-Guys, this is-, tried Enid again.
-Well, I vote Enid as well. I think we’ve found ourselves a leader., chuckled Bianca.
-So I don’t get a say in this?, scoffed Wednesday.
-Sure. But that would still make the 4 of us against one., shrugged Yoko.
-Guys!, spoke Enid, finally getting everyone’s attention.
The blonde sat up straight and looked at the group.
-Look, I’m honored and stuff but I should definitely not be the one making important decisions., frowned the blonde.
-That is exactly why you’d be the perfect leader. You will consult people and not just do as you please., nodded Bianca.
-She’s right, E., added Yoko.
Enid sighed and shook her head in defeat.
-Fine, I guess., said the blonde.
-Great. Now we need other roles. Anyone get anything in mind?, wondered Yoko, looking at everyone.
-I’ll be in charge of our protection and guns. I will also lead the looting groups., said Enid quickly, making it clear that it wasn’t up for debate.
-Great. Wednesday can also be a looter since you two already looted the gas station together and it went well., replied Yoko.
-Looter? I’m much more than just that., stated Wednesday with a frown.
-We’re listening., said Enid firmly.
Wednesday looked at her, not having expected her to take it as seriously.
-Well, I think we can all agree that I have the most knowledge here. Especially when it comes to nature and such., affirmed Wednesday with a shrug.
-She’s also a great strategist. She had the idea to use the vents, yesterday. She’s logical even in stressful situations., nodded Enid, adding to it.
-Okay, so looter, strategist and informant?, suggested Yoko.
Enid looked at Wednesday who gave a quick nod, satisfied with her assigned roles. Enid then turned to Yoko.
-You will take care of the house. House order. Makes sure that we have enough rations and that everyone has everything they need., said Enid quickly.
-You want me to be the cleaning lady?, frowned Yoko.
-No. I want you to be in charge of the house. Make sure everything is running smoothly, make sure we have food for at least 2 months, make sure everyone is feeling alright. Maintenance., elaborated Enid, looking back at her.
-Oh. Okay., nodded Yoko, understanding the importance of her role.
-Good. Now, Bianca. What do you have in store?, asked the blonde.
-I uhm, I worked as a nurse in the ER for a year. I know the basics of how to tend wounds and stuff., admitted the girl.
-Perfect. You’re our healer. Our medic., nodded Enid with a smile.
-Yeah, I can do that. I can always make sure that we have enough medical items in case of major injuries., added Bianca.
-That would be great, yes. You’ll work with Yoko to make sure we have the supplies needed to survive., replied the blonde.
Enid then looked at Ajax.
-Alright, mechanic, what else can you do?, asked Enid with a chuckle.
-Oh, well, I tend to just fix things? Like, electronics but also washing machines and whatever. My dad used to work as a handyman and I would help him on weekends. I can also look at some stuff and uhhh, improve it?, suggested Ajax with a shrug.
-Well, good thing we have tools. Alright, you’ll be our mechanic and handyman., nodded Enid, her eyes then darting to Eugene.
-I get a role?, asked the teenager.
-Of course you do. You’re part of the group, aren’t you?, replied Enid with a nod.
-Oh. Okay. I uh, I used to spent hours in the garden, just cultivating and growing things. Maybe I could do that?, suggested Eugene unsure.
-I have a greenhouse in the back. It needs some cleaning but it’ll be perfect to grow things., replied Wednesday.
-You do? That’s awesome. We could grow things even in winter., smiled the teen.
-Okay kiddo, you’ll take care of the greenhouse. I want you to go there after lunch and then come back to me with a list of things that you’ll need for it. Okay?, demanded Enid with a nod.
-Okay., replied Eugene, clearly excited to be a part of this group.
-Actually, I want everyone to make a list of things they will need to complete their tasks and do their roles., said Enid with a nod.
Everyone agreed to it, except for Wednesday of course. Enid then felt someone pull on her sleeve. She looked down, seeing Amy.
-Oh, hi there., chuckled Enid.
-What do I do?, asked the kid.
-Well, in the morning I want you to have lessons with Yoko, yeah? And then in the afternoon, you job is to keep Buddy busy. Sounds good?, asked Enid, glancing at Yoko who instantly agreed to it, and then at Amy who was grinning.
-Yes!, nodded the girl before running away after Buddy.
The group finally got up and put the dishes away together before each one of them went to check on their needed supplies and tools and making a list for Enid. The blonde sat down outside by Wednesday’s swimming pool. She looked around at the forest surrounding them, finding it oddly comforting. Enid then heard footsteps approaching her, looking up. Wednesday.
-I want to talk to you., said the smaller girl.
-I’m listening?, replied Enid, not sure where this was going.
