A Phoenix in the Water
I hadn't seen him in so long. Don't get me wrong, I was happy he got adopted, but I also missed him. A lot. No matter how hard I tried to forget about him, or how hard I tried to tell myself I didn't care, I failed. It wasn't just him, either. Akane left too. All of them did. One by one they were taken, leaving me, Yuuichiro Amane, no, Hyakuya, alone. Sure, kids came and went, but they weren't the same. I wanted Mika. It'd been almost three years now. I was fifteen and still in the same orphanage I was left in seven years ago, and I was alone.

It was windy and cold outside. Frost tipped tree branches scraped against the window of the Hyakuya orphanage.
Guren Ichinose made his way up the slippery steps, his arm being tugged softly by his husband, Shinya Hiragi. (now Ichinose, but he still found it a bit odd for Shinya to have taken his last name). Shinya had a small grin on his face, and Guren sighed softly, remembering how he got into this mess.
"Do we really have to do this? You know I hate kids."
Shinya looked back at his purple-eyed spouse, "You already agreed to it~"
"Yeah, and I'm already starting to regret it," he shot back.
The silver-haired man shook his head and finished dragging Guren inside, where a short, plump, and kind-looking old woman greeted them.
Guren took a quick look around the room. It was simplistic; cream walls, faded furniture, and paintings of softly colored flowers. There was also photos of each group of children throughout the years. He noted that one child, a young boy with black hair and strikingly fierce eyes, had been in seven different pictures.
He was so absorbed in the green eyes of the child, that he didn't notice the director had approached him, and he didn't realize she was there until he heard a soft sigh, "That poor boy..."
Guren allowed his curiosity to show as he asked, "Why hasn't he been adopted yet?"
She responded with a simple, "He's... Not very trusting of others. He had a tough past."
"What happened to him?"
"Well... His father attempted to kill him, and his mother killed herself.... They said that he was a 'demon child'."
"How old is he?" Shinya chimed in.
"He's fifteen," she replied.
Guren looked over at Shinya and nodded slightly.
The blue-eyed man looked back at the director, "Do you think we could meet him?"
The director nodded gently, "I'll go get him," she said as she scurried off.
The couple waited in comfortable silence until the director returned, Yuuichiro trailing behind her.
His hair was messy and unkempt, as if he'd given up on brushing it, and his eyes looked dull and tired.
Guren was slightly surprised in the change of looks. The Yuuichiro in the photos looked like the strongest, fiercest warrior, yet now he looked defeated.
The old woman stepped away, allowing them to see Yuu fully. He was skinny, as if he hadn’t been eating properly. His clothes were baggy and faded, and his shoes were starting to turn from white to a pale brown.
He stood silently, staring at his shoes, and Guren noticed that Yuu had a loose choker on. It was black, and unlike the rest of his outfit, the diamond charm hanging from it was clean and shiny, as if he polished it daily.
Guren cleared his throat softly, “Hello, Yuuichiro.”
Yuu stayed silent, not even looking up at Guren.
This did not sit well with Guren, as he didn't appreciate being ignored.
“I said hello.”
Yuu looked up this time, a small glint in his eye. He cleared his throat, and his voice came out as a soft whisper, “...I heard you the first time…”
A very slight smile crept onto Guren’s face, ‘I like this kid,’ he thought.
Yuu was looking straight at him now, “...Why are you smiling?”
“I like you, kid.”
“...And what if I don't like you?”
“Then that's your problem, I guess.”
“...”
Shinya leaned over and whispered in Guren’s ear, “Are you sure you don't want to meet any of the others?”
His spouse nodded, “I like him. He's got spunk.”
“Excuse me?”
They both looked over at Yuu.
“Can I go now?” he said.
“Actually,” Shinya started. “We came to adopt you.”
“And if I don't want you to adopt me?”
Guren rolled his eyes, “Oh, don't even. Don't you want to find new friends? Maybe even the old ones?”
“...I doubt I'll find them again.”
“So you've given up already?”
“No! No… I… Just….”
“You have.”
“No, I haven't!”
Guren knew he'd hit a weak spot. He knew by the way Yuu glared at him, and the way his lip was pulled back in a slight snarl.
“Fine. I'll go with you.”
The director looked incredibly surprised, “You're really going to?!”
Yuu nodded, “I'm gonna show this son of a bitch that I haven't given up.”
“Yuuichiro!”
Guren smirked softly, “We'll see about that, kid.”
