Lily Evans was Beautiful. This wasn’t news to Mary - but sitting there in the common room Lily laughing and smiling with Marlene- well she looked like a goddess. Her red hair tumbled perfectly over her shoulders and the warmth of the common room left Lily's pale skin with a light blush. Mary knew she was staring but she doubted anyone would notice, everyone caught up in whispering about the boy's most recent prank and whether they’d get caught.
Mary didn't really care- she knew either way there would probably be another prank pulled by monday and she was willing to bet on it. Sirius and James had somehow managed to charm the portraits to sing whenever a Slytherin entered a room. She knew James and Sirius were smart but she was fairly certain Remus was the mastermind behind that one because all the songs were muggle songs. Marlene and Lily were giggling over how childish the boys were but she could tell they were mildly impressed. Normally, Lily would have been giving the boys a lecture or complaining about how cruel it was to target the Slytherins but even she could tell it was harmless this time. Mary was jerked back to the present when she sensed someone stood behind her.
‘Sirius.’ she said, looking up slowly to see his face grinning down at her.
‘Mary, Mary, Mary - did you hear about my epic prank?’
‘Your epic prank ?’ she replied with a slight smirk and a raised eyebrow.
‘Okay … maybe it wasn't just my prank … but I cast most of the spells! So I think that deserves some recognition-’’ Sirius said with a grin growing on his face.
Mary and Sirius had been dating for a few weeks now. He was a good laugh and a decent kisser, she supposed. She placed a quick kiss on his lips before returning her attention to her friends. Lily and Marlene were pulling disgusted faces at each other.
Sirius slid into the seat next to her wrapping his arm tightly around her. It made her smile slightly to herself- Mary had been certain Sirius liked Remus but about 2 weeks ago Sirius had pulled her into a corridor after potions and had asked her out. He had given her his signature smirk, held out a flower (that Mary was practically certain James had made him take) and stated she was ‘the hottest girl in their year that he thought it would be a shame if she didn't say yes because they'd be a Hogwarts power couple’. That made Mary laugh- like a gut twisting laugh that made her unable to stand. Sirius had seemed mildly amused by her reaction, he had offered her help standing up and she decided she'd give it a chance- he was decent looking and really, how bad of a boyfriend could he be.
Sirius’s warmth was bordering on overbearing but she didn't really want him to move, she had allowed herself to lean into him and she was quite comfortable. Remus, James and Peter seemed to have also joined the group. Peter was sitting beside Marlene on the floor, his eyebrows furrowed as Marlene seemed to be explaining some story with sharp hand gestures and a low tone. James had somehow squashed himself next to Sirius and was engrossed in a conversation that Mary assumed was most likely Quidditch. Remus was discussing some book with Lily. Everyone was happy and Mary was quite content to just listen. Just as her eyelids were beginning to flutter close, Mary's lack of sleep the past couple of days finally getting the better of her, Sirius moved and her head was left to fall.
‘SHIT- why’d you do that for, i was comfortable!?’
The loss of Sirius’ body heat leaving her cold despite the fire in the common room almost constantly burning-
‘Sorry Mary- James was complaining there wasn't enough space so I was just gonna move- i wasn't going to just leave you though, just move you - so you were leaning on the arm of the sofa instead of me. It's probably more comfortable-’ Sirius muttered
Mary could hear the others chuckling and went to grab her wand, the urge to hex someone progressively growing- she wasn't going to hurt them or anything just teach them a lesson. Marlene would be an easy target, she almost always loses her wand Mary thought.
Her train of thought however was interrupted when she noticed Sirius had laid across the floor with his head in Remus's lap. It wasn't an unusual sight but it did irritate Mary a bit that he had left her next to James to go lie with Remus. James and Peter seemed to be having a conversation with their eyes - James seemed almost panicked whilst Peter seemed to be a lot calmer and almost looked as if he was about to laugh..
Suddenly, Mary noticed Lily looking at her expectantly and Mary felt heat rise to her cheeks.
‘Sorry Lils- i didn't quite catch that ?’
‘ I asked if you had done the potions essay for Slughorn’ Lily replied with an almost sympathetic smile .
‘There was an essay….?’ she replied, running through her mental checklist of assignments she was putting off doing. A potions essay was not one she remembered.
‘Oh dear Merlin- Mary, come on, you can copy some of mine, ' Lily said as she gracefully moved to her feet. Mary felt momentarily envious at how effortlessly Lily seemed to do things like that, if she had been sat on the floor she was almost certain she wouldn't have looked nearly as graceful.
She quickly stood, regretting it immediately as the blood seemed to rush from her head leaving her stood, wobbling slightly.Lily looked at her, her green eyes filling with concern.
‘Im fine Lily, just like- head rush or something’
Mary and Lily waved bye to the rest of the group and Marlene promised she'd be up shortly. The girls walked to the staircase chatting aimlessly about nothing. Mary let out a small grumble complaining about the number of stairs they had to climb to get to their dorm room and Lily simply smiled and nodded in agreement.
Silences with Lily Evans were never awkward, Mary couldn't quite explain it but her normal need to fill silences with gossip or snarky remarks seemed to just disappear.
After a few moments they walked into the dorm room, immediately Mary made a beeline to Lily’s bed. For some weird reason Mary was convinced it was the most comfortable… Maybe it was the lavender spray Lily sprayed on her pillow every night, or the piles of blankets that Lily's mother had crochet. Whatever it was, it meant Lily's bed was the normal spot for homework or gossip sessions. Mary waved her wand lazily muttering ‘acio quill and parchment’ before looking over at Lily, who seemed to be rummaging through some drawers looking for something.
‘There's a spell for that you know-’ Mary said grinning as Lily clearly grew more and more frustrated.
‘Accio potions essay-’ Lily muttered as she joined Mary on the bed handing her essay over to Mary and allowing her to copy it whilst pulling out some fresh parchment for herself. Not long after, Marlene joined them.Lily simply nodded in acknowledgement, picking up her quill and noting something down. Mary couldn't help but admire Lily's handwriting. It was so easy to look at , unlike her own scratchy writing lily’s seemed to glide along the page with the perfect balance of cursive so it was pretty yet still readable. A small sigh came from Marlene before she joined the pair on the bed, her head in Mary's lap.
Almost immediately Mary found herself playing with Marlene's messy blond hair. Marlene, almost manically, a few nights ago decided her hair was too long and cut it into a short shag haircut. The smell of Marlene's shampoo filled her nostrils; it was sharp and citrusy and Mary had to admit it fit her perfectly. Her mind wandered over to the smell of Lily’s hair- she used a more floral scent, perhaps it was lily scented? She wasn't quite sure but she knew it smelt good and comforting…
‘Do you think Dorcas liked my new haircut? I could have sworn she was staring at me from across the great hall this morning ..?’ Marlene mumbled, closing her eyes.
‘Are you ever going to shut up about Dorcas, like we get it you're madly in love with her’ lily groaned, placing her quill down and looking at Marlene and mary.
Her red hair had fallen slightly over her eyes and Mary desperately wanted to tuck it behind her ear but she pushed the urge down as she giggled slightly at Lily's comment.
‘She has a point marls, you are pining over some slytherin girl and refusing to do anything about it. I really don't think i can stand another two hour conversation about how stunning she looks after quidditch practice’
‘But she does look stunning , have you seen her!? The way her skin shines slightly after playing-’
Marlene doesn't get to say much more as Mary shoves her hand over her mouth. This however does nothing to stop marlene and she unashamedly licks her hand causing her to remove her hand. Completely and utterly disgusted.
‘Your disgusting Marls- no wonder the pretty slytherin girl doesn't wanna date you-’Lily said in a sing-song voice as she got up putting her parchment away.
The girls slowly got up, Marlene suddenly deciding it was imperative that she go to the quidditch pitch to ‘scout’ out the enemies technique (code for oogle Dorcas) and Lily offered to join her.Mary had not decided what she wanted to do but followed them down into the common room nonetheless. The moment they got down into the common room
Sirius walked over and stood grinning down at her.
‘Mary-’
Quickly she placed a light kiss on his lips and smiled up at him
‘You wanna get food right.. And wanted to know if I wanted to join you?’ she asked
She knew exactly what he was going to say as it had been the same thing he had asked everyday for the past week. She was fairly sure it was James' idea but she was flattered nonetheless when Sirius asked.
‘You read my mind- but uh first-’ he helped her to her feet before pressing a hard, almost desperate kiss to her lips. She raised her eyebrows with mild amusement.
‘Missed me that much huh?’ she giggled pushing her hair behind her ears and glancing back at Lily and Marlene who were now pulling faces at each other.
Sirius pulled Mary closer to him roughly placing his hands on her waist, the room suddenly seemed charged with tension. Glancing round Mary noticed Remus had just walked in.of course. Honestly, If the time came and Sirius was ready to make a move on Remus she’d be more than okay with the breakup and would even help him out if he wanted.
Remus had already walked through the common room and up towards the boys dormitory before Sirius loosened his grip.
‘Sirius- you alright..?’
“Oh fuck - yea sorry mary- i just- sorry’ he said suddenly looking a bit sheepish ‘can i- i was- food?’
Mary couldn't help but chuckle a little.
‘Come on - lets go before you get distracted again’ she began to walk out, now holding onto Sirius’ hand. It was cold and big compared to her own and if she was being honest it didn't feel quite right. She wondered what it would be like to hold Lily's hand before shaking her head slightly to remove the image. For merlin sake- what the hell was going on with her,it felt like recently all she’d thought about was Lily.
When they’d reached the Great Hall she moved swiftly over to the Gryffindor table and took their normal seats. Mary sat close to Sirius’ side and his arm was now once again loosely slung around her waist. It wasn't comfortable but it's not like she could simply tell her boyfriend to budge up and give her some space. She piled some food onto her plate and listened to Sirius rambling about something or other. She didn't really eat, just pushed the food aimlessly round her plate, her appetite not really there. Sirius didn't notice- he hardly ever noticed anything with her.
Lily notices everything …
shit
She was doing it again.
For some unexplained reason she kept comparing her best friend to her boyfriend... who even does that?
Before Mary could continue her inner crisis however she noticed Sirius looking at her with a questioning expression. Not wanting to explain herself she placed a hard kiss on his lips and threaded her fingers through his hair. His hair was one of her favourite things. It was soft and fell just above his shoulders. Sirius was kissing back with equal enthusiasm and quickly lost herself in the sensation of his chapped lips against hers. That was until some 4th year told them in less than polite terms to ‘ get a room’ and Sirius promptly gave them the finger before helping her up from the bench and leading her into a small alcove where they had made out before.
‘Are you - like okay?’ Sirius asks Mary hesitantly.
‘Of course why wouldn't I be- merlin I thought you brought me here to make out’ she says rolling her eyes, evidently trying to make light of the situation and avoid any real conversations. Her and Sirius don't do ‘Serious’ conversations, as ironic as it was.
