Wait wat
Hours passed since Grillby had left. It was late afternoon at the moment, Sans and I were discussing tomorrow. Whether he would come in in the morning, afternoon, not at all. When he would get his paycheck if I had enough in the budget to actually pay him as much as he's owed. It was at first that I brought up the money issue and his payment. I was afraid he would think that I'm not paying him as much as I should because he's a monster, but if he thought that at any point today. He hasn't made any signs of it. five people came in so far, as well as seven monsters, some in groups some alone. But never together, every time there was a monster buying an item and a human would enter the shop the human person would immediately turn around and leave without saying a word, only giving a look of disgust.
I had to hold back the urge to run after them and shout, "THAT'S RIGHT, WE SELL TO MONSTERS YOU RACEST A-HOLE" but it seems that Sans catches that look on my face and always gets me to do something else, like get the monster a muffin, put the money in the cash register, ect.
But one day, he won't stop me. I'll eff them up
Currently, it’s 3 o’clock in the afternoon. My counter was a mess, papers littered everywhere. After I finally finished serving this last customer I decided I should clean it up.
I scrapped all the paper I was using for the math I was failing at. It was then that I saw something.
It was a set series of numbers. It looks as if someone wrote down their number on my paper. I almost want to just throw it away and if the person comes in I could just explain that I don’t feel right texting my customers unless they’re family or friend or employee. But that’s when, I scanned it some more. Under the number, was a dash and a name. It was hard to make it out. The cursive looked like they wrote it in a hurry.
XXX-XXX-XXXX
-Grillby
Grillby? He gave me his number, Grillby… Gave me… His number…
My face immediately lit up, and I let out a tiny squeak. Sans looks over in confusion. Why would a human make a noise like that? I avoid eye contact. If he saw my blushing cherry tomato red face, he didn’t say anything. He only went back to whatever it was he was working on.
I quickly pulled out my phone and put him into my contacts, pausing a couple times to fix some of my mistakes from fast typing.
I figured I should shoot him a quick text to give him my own number. Just so he knows I found the paper and didn’t throw it away by accident.
You: Hey, its _____ from the café!
Of course, I don’t expect an answer right away, so I put my phone up and kept cleaning. Since it was only 3 and there’s usually a dead zone in the afternoon, till 5 or so rolls around. So if we got things cleaned up, perhaps there would be some time to just play around. Maybe lighten the place up a bit.
It takes an hour, its completely dead. But the floor was swept then mopped, even deep scrubbed. The tables wiped, then scrubbed, then bleached. The windows cleaned inside and out. The walls cleaned up and down. The front counter scrubbed and wiped. Chairs wiped, then the stools sprayed.
The kitchen deep cleaned, the fryers, oven, floors, walls counters, sinks, the trash taken out.
Everything that could possibly be done, was done.
And probably wouldn’t have to be done for another couple of weeks, deep cleaning wise.
I sit at the counter, my papers neatly stacked, the space under me all well placed and neat.
Sans sits to my right, he has a phone pulled out and is scrolling through some social media. A few snickers from him here and there.
While the cleaning went on, he mainly sat at the front counter while I cleaned, he had no objections to it.
Every now and then Id need his help with something but once the door would ring he would be there in a hurry. (theres a bell in the back attached to the front so it would keep ringing till we went back up there. Its set up that way so that if im busy doing something noisy and theres a customer in the front, I could quickly go out. But no one came in and the only times it rang was the wind.)
I debated on making another batch of muffins or experiment on the baking, but it felt like it was going to be a slow day
So I pulled out headphones, my phone, then a freshly made cup of coffee by my side. I pulled up Netflix.
With one ear bud in one ear and the other on the counter, I was ready to move and work if need be. But for now. My shows awaited.
It takes two shows but finally 5 o’clock rolled around and someone walked in. After that two more people, then a monster pair and a lone person.
i smile, happy for the new distraction. I pause my Netflix series and greet them all. “Hello, what can I do for you folks today?”
Some even said hi back.
it didn’t take long to pick up after that, after the first 6, 9 more came in, then 11 then I just lost count after that. One after another they just kept coming in.
It was the first crazy rush I’ve ever had.
and as quickly as they all came, they dispersed. Leaving only three sitting in the booths. Not talking. Creating a calm silence. I slide the broom over to Sans, who gets the subtle hint and starts cleaning the mess the rush had left.
coffee, cups, napkins. Bags. They all littered the floors and counters. I took out a rag wiped the counters clean.
We ran out of mocha, so I ran back and grabbed another bag to brew another batch. It loudly started, but once the smell of fresh mocha coffee, I could hear the mmm’s fill the air. Breaking the silence.
my smile grew. This is why I started the cafe.
once I noticed the business slow down. I glance over to sans who has been watching and waiting for his next order from me.
”Scents you’ve been here forever and a half. Why don’t you head home and I’ll see you Monday.”
Sans chuckles at the pun. “Okay boss lady” he clocks out “I’ll smell you later” he waves as he leaves the shop.
I laughed as he walked away, the customers stared at me for second like I was weird.
It stays consistently busy and every now and then I get a little bummed that I couldn’t just turn and tell sans a pun when I thought of them. I find that, I like to hang out and enjoy his company a lot more than I thought.
soon enough, 8 o’clock rolled around, and the night dragged on, no one in sight. The feeling from the first rush gone.
I groaned, already missing the people, pleeeeeease come baaaaaaack. I was so used the the people coming in at least every 5-10 minutes. But once it seemed like things had really died down for good, I cleaned up what little of a mess I had.
Then reached for my phone in my back pocket, when I didn’t find anything but the smooth feel of my jeaned ass. I began to panic. Where did I leave it, did it fall out in the rush? A quick glance at the ground told me no, it didn’t. My blood turned cold. Did I leave it on the counter and someone took it?
My eyes glanced across the smooth counter top and I saw an earbud peeking out from under a pile of napkins that fell over, my heart calmed and relief sank in. I pushed them aside and there it was, headphones plugged in, propped up on as if ready for another episode of my show.
I realized, someone might have tried to contacted me in that time and I might now have heard it with the headphones in.
i quickly pull down the notifications.
‘Mchotty: one new message’
‘Alphys: two new messages’
‘One new message from an unknown number’
I smile into my phone, I wasn’t expecting a text back from Grillby so soon. A quick glance up to the window to confirm that no one was coming in, I decide to reply to each.
-Sent 5:12 pm-
Mchotty: hello, I’m glad you found my number. I apologize for the late text. I was busy with work things.
-Sent 8:09 pm-
Hey, yeah I almost didn’t see it. I’m sorry for my late reply too :me
It actually got busy today! :me
i clicked into alphys messages, happy to have more people to talk to nowadays.
-Sent 7:43 pm-

There was a notification sound. Grillby texted back
-Sent 8:10 pm-
I’m good with whatever you’re comfortable with, I’m always at my cafe. :me
i see the notification from the unknown number. I know who it’s from. I don’t understand how he could have texted. How he got a hold of my number, or even remembered it. How he knew I still had the same number, or why he’s not in jail.
all I could see of the text without entering the test was “cmon muffin w-“ I cleared the screen from the notification.
I go ahead and click on Grillbys message.
Mchotty: that’s good! More business means more money. How are you? I know what it’s like to work full day shifts everyday by your self. Are you taking care of yourself?
It’s been awhile since anyone ever... wow... the blush hadn’t even crept up to my cheeks, it basically exploded onto my face.
Oh, yeah of course. :me
I mean, sometimes I forget about dinner cus it’s so much :me
work to close up for half an hour just to eat somewhere else.
And sanwiches get old after a while..
Mchotty: have you eaten tonight?
My stomach growled at the mention of dinner, but my mouth tasted stale at the thought of eating another sandwich.
Not yet :me
Mchotty: are you at work right now?
My eyebrows scrunched, why would he ask that.
yeah? :me
Mchotty: oh good! I’ll grab us some dinner and be right over. Give me 15 minutes.
My heavy blush returned, he didn’t have to do that. I feel so bad, he’s going out of his way just to make sure I eat tonight.
But I have to admit. It feels good for someone to care this much about me.
I just want to be sure he knows it isn’t necessary.
hey, you don’t have to do that. I’ve got sandwiches.. :me
Mchotty: it’s not problem for me, I was hoping to see you tonight anyways. Besides, I’m sure you’re tired of sandwiches by now.
Oh jesus. This man.
He lights my FACE ON FIRE. holy shit, that’s perfect, why is no one here I can say it to.
