Marks are what ties everyone to their soulmate and each and every person has a mark that matches to someone else’s, tying them together. These Marks guarantee there is someone out there for you, that you won’t be alone. But of course not everyone gets to so easily find their soulmate. Levi never asked to be a markless freak for the first years of his life and Eren never asked to be diagnosed with a rare condition where his Mark was completely fucked up.
