Soldier Soldier

He was waiting for the bus, soon he would be leaving and he didn’t know if he’d ever be back again. Taking the time he had to spare and walking into a café near the bus stop, the brunette solider took a seat at one of the empty booths, staring down at his shaking hands that rested on the tabletop.
“Can I get you anything?”
He looked up, his blue gaze landing on the most beautiful girl he had ever seen wearing a [favorite color] bow in her [h/c] hair and a soft smile.
“Water please.” He voice was weak, all confidence gone now that the reality of what he was doing began to sink in.
The girl nodded and walked away, returning within a few minutes with his water and a slice of apple pie.
“I didn’t-“
“I know,” The [e/c] eyed girl said with that ever present smile, “but you looked like you could use something to cheer you up.”
“Would you mind sitting down for a while and talking to me?” He suddenly said, feeling loneliness and fear sink in, “I’m feeling a little low.”
“I’m off in an hour and I know where we can go.” She answered and turned away but looked over her shoulder at him, “I’m [Y/N].”
“Bucky.” He answered with the faintest of smiles.

She took him to the pier, it was one of her favorite places around and she thought the crashing waves would help relax him. They sat there in silence but as the brunette man looked up at the sky then shifted to have a better look at the water before he broke the silence.
“I bet you have a boyfriend but I don’t care,” Bucky said as he stared out at the water, “but I don’t care, I have no one to write a letter to.” He took a breath then looked over at her, “Would you mind if I send one back here to you?”

And it was just like that, he left and soon after she started getting letters and writing just as many in return. They came from England first and were now coming from France, putting him in the heart of the war.

Dear [Y/N],

I’m thinking that I might just love you.
I know it’s crazy but you just never leave my thoughts and right now you’re the only thing keeping me together. I can’t wait to get back home and make you my girl.

I know I shouldn’t be telling you this, I don’t want to be scaring you, but I need someone to tell.
I’m scared, every time a squad goes out there are people who never come back….I’m scared that I’m gonna be one of those people. Bombs light up the sky every night, making it impossible to sleep, even harder to hear loud noises and not get a bit jumpy. I knew what I was getting myself into when I joined the military, and now I have someone to fight for, I wanted to make a difference, help people ya know, but I’m only human.
When it’s getting kinda rough over here, I think of that day sitting down by the pier and close my eyes and see your pretty smile. Like I said, you’re the only thing keeping me together doll.

Don’t worry but I won’t be able to write for a while.

Love,
Bucky

She would read his letters over and over. She knew he would come back, she had hope.

Dear [Y/N],

One month, one month and I’ll be home!

I love you,
Bucky

Upon reading his latest letter tears of happiness slowly ran down her cheeks. It had been a while since his last letter, now he was writing from Germany though he had not only written to her but also announced that he was finally coming back! The letter had been sent two weeks ago so that meant she only had another two weeks to go and she couldn’t wait to wrap her arms around him and tell him how she loved him so very much.

“Hey are you ready to go?” Sally, her best friend asked as she walked into her room, most likely let in by her mother.
“Just a minute!” [Y/N] said with the brightest smile she had had in a long time.
Tying a [second favorite color] bow, having sent her favorite one to Bucky months ago, in her ponytail.

“I heard Jimmy Pillington is quarterback tonight.” Sally said as she and [Y/N] walked down the street towards the high school.
“Oh really, what happened to Henry?” The [h/c] haired girl inquired, mind completely elsewhere.
“He hurt his shoulder in that fight with Bobby last week remember.” Sally remarked in an exasherated tone.
“Oh right.”

They were sitting on the bleachers, the Lord’s prayer was said and the anthem was sang, when the principal stood and walked to the middle of the field.

“Folks would you bow your head,” He asked, “for a listed local Germany dead.”

Her eyes widened in panic, somehow a part of her knew, but as she listened her heart still clung to some small sliver of hope she still maintained.

“James Buchanan Barnes was killed a week ago in the line of duty.”

Her blood ran cold, without even paying any attention to the game that had begun [Y/N] stood and walked away from her friends. As she stood under the stands her cries went unheard thanks to the roar of the cheering crowd above but she was in no mood to cheer with them and only continued to cry as she realized her soldier was never coming home.
