Memory Game Madness

C3 : Memory Game Madness

Engfa lay in bed, boredom settling in. She counted on her fingers—six days since the start of the game. Six days in the villa.

She frowned, frustrated. No secrets had been discovered yet. Exhaling, she realized this was going to take longer than expected. She closed her eyes, trying to relax, but the distant sounds of laughter and shouting from the living room interrupted her thoughts. Curiosity made her sit up just as Maria burst into the room.

"Come on, Engfa! There’s an announcement."

Finally, something.

All the contestants gathered in the living room, facing the large TV screen. The screen lit up, and text appeared as the final players arrived.

New Game: Memory Challenge.

Simple.

But the stakes? High.

The loser would have a major clue about their secret revealed to everyone.”

Silence fell over the room. Engfa’s heartbeat quickened. She fought the urge to look at Charlotte for comfort.

They moved to the game room, where a massive table covered in a hundred face-down cards awaited them.

Engfa was good at many things—but memory? Not one of them.

Across from her, Charlotte sat poised and calm, her face unreadable. Engfa knew Charlotte had a near-photographic memory. This was Charlotte’s game to win.

The host spoke:

"You have one minute to memorize the cards in front of you. Once the timer goes off, we’ll begin. If you find a match, you stay in the game. If not, it moves to the next player. The contestant with the fewest matches loses."

A dramatic pause. All the cards were revealed by staff members.

"Good luck."

Engfa took a deep breath, and looked at the cards. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Charlotte’s gaze flick across the cards, analyzing patterns within seconds. Meanwhile, Engfa had no idea where to start.

The timer ran out, and staff members flipped the cards face-down again.

Engfa panicked. She repeated to herself, "Blue strawberry, left corner. Pink lemon next to it." But everything else had already disappeared from her mind.

She was going to lose.

Maria started strong with four pairs. Charles found five. Lou amazed everyone with seven before making a mistake. Then, Charlotte stunned them all by revealing fifteen pairs in a row. She smiled in satisfaction.

At this point, the pink lemon had already been taken. And as Engfa observed the game unfold, she realized something—this challenge was unfair. The last players had a better chance of finding a pair, but they had to rely more on luck than memory.

When it was her turn, only twenty cards remained. Her odds of finding a match by pure chance? 5%. (Correct me if I'm wrong, I’ve never been a statistics genius.)

Théo had only found one pair. He was currently the lowest scorer. She needed two pairs to survive.

Engfa clung to the one thing she remembered: the blue strawberry. During previous turns, she had also spotted a basketball and a mug, but she didn’t know where their matches were.

Her strategy? Flip a random card and hope it was one of the images she remembered.

The cards felt like they were shifting on their own, mocking her.

With a trembling hand, she flipped a card from the center of the table.

A bike.

Damn.

Her heart pounded. The chances of randomly finding the other bike? 6%.

She glanced at Charlotte for a brief second—and froze.

Charlotte looked just as panicked. Then, in a barely noticeable movement, she pointed her pinky finger toward a card in front of her. A subtle hint.

Engfa’s breath hitched. Charlotte quickly withdrew her hand, her expression neutral once again.

Engfa understood.

She flipped the card Charlotte had discreetly pointed at.

A bike.

Relief flooded her, a victorious smile spreading across her lips. Her heartbeat was erratic, not just from the game but from Charlotte’s help.

She stole another glance at Charlotte. Her expression remained unreadable, but her fingers trembled ever so slightly.

Charlotte shifted in her seat, tense.

Next to her, Théo was probably praying she’d mess up her next turn.

Engfa hesitated, hovering her hand above the remaining cards.

"Please, please... a blue strawberry, a basketball, or a mug."

The entire room was silent, all eyes locked on her next move.

"Good TV," she thought bitterly.

Then, on impulse, she flipped a card in front of Lou.

Her eyes widened.

The damn blue strawberry had been there all along.

She reacted quickly, reaching for the other blue strawberry card.

Two pairs.

The game was over.

Théo had lost.

Engfa slumped back in her chair, still in shock that she had beaten the odds.

A long, tense pause followed. Then, the host’s voice rang out:

"Théo, you lost. A clue to your secret will now be revealed."

Everyone leaned in, listening intently.

"Airline. Flight 10893."

Dead silence.

Engfa turned to Alicia.

They already knew more than the others about Théo. Their first clue had been: "From the sky to the ground, fate chose only one."

This added with the new clue led to a plane crash.

Alicia shot up from her seat and bolted toward the Revealed Room—the place where players could officially guess secrets.

Engfa scrambled after her, followed closely by a few confused contestants.

She was too late.

Alicia had entered the room alone.

Théo was about to be eliminated. His prize money would go straight to Alicia.

Engfa leaned against the wall, frustration bubbling inside her.

Alicia’s secret was definitely her next target.
