How They (Officially) Met

For several nights Jasper would walk the walls of the tribe searching for Garnet. There was something about her, something familiar that haunted Jasper every time she closed her eyes.

One night, while patrolling, Jasper felt a pair of eyes on her and a pull in her gut that told her to follow. Jasper sighed but followed and was led to the beach that laid east of the tribe.

Jasper furrowed her gaze and looked across the beach. Suddenly, her gaze landed on a figure sitting on a log and her stomach lurched. It’s her. It’s Garnet.

“I found you,” Jasper said as she slowly approached Garnet.

Garnet looked at Jasper. “It seems you have, though you shouldn’t be here.” With that, Garnet stood and began walking away.

“Wait.” Jasper latched onto Garnet’s wrist, sending a shock wave through them both. Jasper quickly released Garnet’s wrist. “What was that?”

Garnet looked at Jasper but said nothing. Who was this girl? Garnet turned and continued walking away. Jasper hurried to catch up with her.

“Where are you from?” Garnet doesn’t answer but continued walking. “Hey, I’m talking to you.” Jasper grabbed Garnet’s wrist again. In a split second, she was on her back staring up at a seething Garnet.

“Don’t touch me.”

Jasper growled, pushed herself off the ground and charged at Garnet. Garnet dodged but was not prepared for the kick to her side and was knocked off balance. Garnet regained her balance and went on the offense. Jasper had heavy hits, but Garnet was faster. Garnet sent a flurry of body shots to Jasper’s side, most of which were blocked before she swept Jasper’s feet from underneath her.

Jasper did the only thing she could think of and grabbed ahold of Garnet as she went down, bringing Garnet down with her. She flipped them so her body pinned Garnet’s beneath her and she held Garnet’s arms above her head. “I like you. Not many can stand against me.” Jasper smiled down at Garnet, her golden gaze glowed in amusement.

Garnet laughed, low and melodically. “Stand against you? I got you.” Garnet closed her eyes, let out a breath and instantly their positions switched.

Jasper half grimaced, half smiled. “You’ll have to teach me that trick.”

Garnet squinted her eyes at Jasper but got off Jasper and offered her a hand with a smirk that pulled at the corners of her lips. “We’ll see.”

Jasper grabbed her hand and allowed Garnet to pull her to her feet. “Meet me here every other night.” Jasper stated more than asked.

Garnet crossed her arms with a raised brow. “Why?”

Jasper smiled, her eye crinkled in amusement. “To spar. I don’t know who you are, but I know you pose no threat to me or the tribe.”

Garnet hummed. “I could say the same about you.” Garnet shrugged her shoulders. “Fine, I’ll meet you here.” With that, Garnet walked away.

That was two years ago.
