Todoroki Didn't See That Coming
I watched as Iida sped past his opponent, disorienting them before shoving them out of the circle. Cheers erupted around me, people parting Iida on the back and showering him in praises. I leaned against Hitoshi, idly toying at the ends of his capture weapon. Midoriya got up, heading over to start his match, leaving an open space next to me for Iida to sit. Uraraka rubbed one of his shoulders, giving him words of encouragement and compliments on his match. I leaned back, back of my head resting against Bakugou's knee. He looked down at me from his conversation with Kaminari, smiling a little and reached down to ruffle my hair slightly.
I sighed, focusing on the match in front of me. Midoriya was against some kid from 1-D, and he almost had them out of the circle. I toyed with Hitoshi's capture weapon more, attempting to distract myself from the growing pool of nerves and fear sitting in my gut. After a particularly sharp tug on Hitoshi's capture weapon, he turned his attention towards me.
"What's wrong?" He asked, eyebrows scrunching together in concern. The rest of the group turned towards me, Mina and Kirishima twisting around in their seats in front of me. I sign again, leaning more into Bakugou's leg.
"I guess I'm just nervous." I replied. I looked over at where Todoroki was sitting with Momo and Jirou, the three of them talking amongst themselves. "Todoroki's quirk is similar to mine, and with his fire side, he could easily evaporate any water I attempt to use."
"You'll do fine." Kaminari said, rubbing my shoulder. "Todoroki may have a similar quirk to you, but that doesn't mean he can do exactly what you can do."
"As much as I hate to admit it, but Kaminari has a point." Iida said, earning an indigent squawk from Kaminari. "Todoroki isn't able to control water like you do. He doesn't even know what your quirk does."
"Use that to your advantage!" Uraraka stated, grinning at me from her spot next to Iida. "You could let him do all the work for you! He still doesn't use his fire side much, so he'll probably got at you with his ice side."
"Let him give you all the water you need." Hitoshi chimes in, slowly pulling his capture weapon out of my grasp. "He won't see it coming." I nodded, sitting up as Midoriya and his way back over to us. We congratulated him on his win, and watched as Mina got up to face her opponent. It wasn't long before it was my turn to face Todoroki. Hitoshi had won his match, Mineta forgot what Hitoshi's quirk did and was promptly reminded when he responded to my brother and was forced to walk out of the circle.
I stood in the middle of the circle, barely paying attention to what Nemuri was saying. I caught Aizawa and Mic's eyes, my anxiety easing as Mic gave me a smile and Aizawa have me a thumbs up. Endeavor stood next to them, a smirk that could be classified as borderline villain plastered on his face. I waited for Nemuri to give us the signal, taking a deep breath and letting the tension leave my shoulders.
You got this! Eloise cheered, and I smiled a little. Nemuri have the signal, and I let my instincts take over. Todoroki shot an ice blast at me, attempting to push me out of the circle. I dodged to the right, anticipating his next move. He shot another blast of ice, and I again dodged, this time to the left, skidding slightly over the ice on the floor as I made my way past the first ice blast. Todoroki seemed to get missed off that I was dodging his attacks so easily, and proceeded to shoot blast after blast of ice in my direction. Shards of ice were flying everywhere, creating a cloud of ice around us. You couldn't see an inch in front of you, and I was forced to rely on my other senses in order to dodge the attacks.
Todoroki stopped his attack, letting the cloud settle as he waited to see where I was. The gym went silent, everyone waiting to see if the new girl from 1-C could beat the son of Endeavor. Once the cloud settled, everyone gasped. Todoroki's mouth hung open as he took in the sight before him. I stood in front of the wall of ice he had created, breath coming out in white puffs.
"You know, I should thank you." I said, steadying my breathing as I smirked.
"What do you mean?" He asked, face contorting in confusion. If I could've taken a picture of it, I would have. I smirked a little more, feeling everyone's gaze fall on me. The ice wall behind me shook, sending small amounts of ice shards everywhere. Todoroki watched in shock as the wall lifted itself up, melting into a large blob of water before moving over my outstretched hands.
"This." I responded, before shoving the water at him. He tried to dodge, but I was able to snag the back of his shirt and lift him off the ground. I moved him out of the circle, gently setting him on the ground before releasing his shirt from the water.
"Umiko wins!" Nemuri shouted, and the crowd erupted in cheers. I walked over to where Todoroki was standing, trying to process what had just happened. I made the water float next to me, reaching out my hand towards the half and half male.
"No hard feelings?" I asked. Todoroki looked at me, emotions flashing in front of his eyes quickly. He gave a breathy chuckle before taking my hand and giving it a firm shake.
"No hard feelings, you did win fairly." He replied, and I smiled a little. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Endeavor's face go through a range of emotions, including rage, confusion, and surprise before going back to neutral. I placed the water into the buckets someone wheeled over, and Todoroki and I walked back into the crowd. Everyone congratulated me on my win, patting me on my back as I walked back towards my friends. Todoroki went back to Momo and Jirou, but have me a small smile before he left.
He's taking his loss surprisingly well, Eloise murmured. I chuckled in my head.
I figured he wouldn't be happy about it, considering he's also one of the first people from 1-A to lose aside from Mineta, but I guess I did win fairly, I responded. I sat back and watched the rest of the matches, occasionally talking with the group about the matches or just random stuff we thought of. My next match was with a kid from 1-B- which I won- and soon it was time for the 2v2 round. Everyone was paired up and instructed to sit with their partner while their opponents were called out.
I was paired with Kirishima, thankful that I knew my partner. We sat there, eagerly awaiting are opponents. Hitoshi was paired with Bakugou, of all people, and they already seemed to be making a plan. I had hoped that they wouldn't be pitted against Kirishima and I, and thankfully they weren't. Kirishima and I were paired against some kid from 1-C and Mineta, which causes the two of the gag. Mineta would be easy to get out of the circle, but both of your opponents had to be outside the circle in order for you to win.
We sat and watched the matches, cheering when Bakugou and Hitoshi won after Bakugou blasted Hitoshi in the air in order for him to get behind their opponents and use his capture weapon to yank them out of the circle. When it was our turn, Kirishima and I looked at our opponents. We sized up the competition, and created a plan that remained an unspoken between us. Once Nemuri have the signal, Kirishima rushed forward, distracting Mineta and his partner as I created a water sphere with some of the water.
I rushed around our opponents, using the sphere to trap Mineta and float him out of the circle, releasing from his watery prison. Turning our attention to our other opponent, Kirishima hardened his arms, punching the kid in the gut as he ran at us. The force of the blow pushed the kid backwards and knocked him off his feet, allowing me to create a layer of ice on the proofreading out of the circle. The moment the kid landed, the backwards momentum caused him to slid out of the circle. The crowd cheered, and Kirishima raised his fist towards me, thankfully back to his normal squishy flesh instead of being rock hard. I have him a fist bump, and we walked back towards our friends.
My nerves about the matches had disappeared, instead replaced with nerves about the results. After the last few matches, we were dismissed for the day. The teachers told us that we would receive a letter in Friday if we got in, and it would hopefully answer any questions we had about transferring courses. Hitoshi and I wandered back to our class, grabbing our bags as the bell rang to dismiss us for the day. Walking out into the cold of winter, we finally let ourselves breathe a little.
"Think we'll get in?" Hitoshi asked as we headed to the car. Aizawa and Mic were already standing there, ready to go home and sit with the cats and be warm. I nodded, a smile making it's way across my face.
"We did well, and we both won all of our matches.I would be surprised if we didn't."
