The Sound of Your Voice
"Sua," Mizi called, shaking her awake. "You can't fall asleep yet, we haven't finished notes." They were supposed to be working on homework for school.
Sua raised her head and moved her hair out of her eyes. "Sorry, I didn't get much sleep last night," she said.
Mizi frowned. Sua seemed extra exhausted. "You sure?" She touched Sua's forehead and felt the fever immediately. "God, Sua, you should've just said you were sick. I shouldn't have come over, you should be resting."
Sua's face was already flushed, but if it was possible for her to get redder, she did. "You help, actually."
"What, am I just that boring?" Mizi teased.
Sua shook her head quickly. "No! I like your voice, I mean. It's soothing."
"I can sing for you," Mizi offered seriously.
"Please!"
Sua relaxed when Mizi began singing, but then considered that she was still on a couch. It didn't matter much, the couch was surprisingly comfortable. She was lulled to sleep by the sound of her singing.
Sometime later, Sua awoke to Mizi talking. "I'm sorry, but I should get you medicine. Your fever hasn't gone down at all."
Groggily, Sua sat up. "Alright." Her throat was scratchy and her voice sounded all wrong to her. She hated it, and she wasn't sure she liked relying on someone else taking care of her. Nevertheless, she was grateful for Mizi to be right there.
"It'll probably make you more tired, but that wouldn't do you any harm," Mizi explained. "Swallow the pill," she said, and held out a cup of water.
Sua swallowed, then decided she should probably move to the bed. "It'll be more comfortable," she told Mizi, "and it'll have more room." Mizi helped to steady her when Sua's limbs threatened to give out. She collapsed against the pillows and closed her eyes. "Talk to me," she said.
Sua drifted off to the sound of Mizi's voice, going on about school and singing and dancing... Sua wished she could listen to her voice forever.
