In A Room Full Of People
"How on earth did I let you convince me to go to this?" Sua murmured, adjusting her headband. "I don't even like parties." The headband was a pale blue, matching the short dress Mizi had picked out for her.
Mizi laughed. "C'mon, it'll be great! The whole group will be there, so you won't have to be alone at all. Plus," she squealed, "I'm wearing heels, so you can't lose me!" She would take any possible opportunity to be as tall as she could be, as the rest of the group was mostly tall. She'd recently bought a pair of glittering silver heels that went well enough with her crop top and black skirt.
Sua huffed, accepting that she was just going to have to be the shortest. Heels were painful and too much of a bother most of the time. She broke eye contact with Mizi and looked at the floor. "As if I could ever lose track of your bright pink hair."
"Aw, is my beauty blinding you?" she teased. "I know you love me, don't ignore me."
"I could never ignore you." Sua leaned in to kiss Mizi, but they eventually had to break away to continue preparing.
"I already regret this!" Sua yelled over the music thumping loudly in the background.
Mizi rolled her eyes and greeted everyone in turn. "Anyone want a drink?" she asked.
Ivan asked for one, along with Luka, and surprisingly Sua chimed in. Ivan gave her a look. "Really?"
"Oh, leave me alone. You guys wanted me to come to a party, I came. I can drink if I want." Sua glanced again at Mizi, to make sure she would get her one.
Mizi returned with the drinks, handing Sua a slightly smaller glass before drinking out of her own. "Ivan, Till, you haven't gone on tour for a while. What's up with that?"
The tips of Till's ears reddened as he said, "We wanted some time to ourselves."
Mizi raised an eyebrow suggestively. "Uh-huh." She turned to Sua. "Wait, have you ever drank before?"
"Once," Sua said, not adding more until Ivan gave her a wounded look. "It was around a year ago, maybe? You and Till were touring, and Mizi had dragged me off to one of my first parties. She left to go to the bathroom, and I took a sip or two out of her cup."
Mizi's jaw dropped open. "So that's why my cup was almost empty!"
Till shook his head. "Sua, quite the rebel. I'd keep an eye on her if I were you, Mizi."
Sometime later, Sua had stepped outside for some air, and Mizi followed her.
"You alright?" Mizi asked, sitting down beside her on the grass.
She waved her off. "Fine, I'm fine. It's just loud in there."
Mizi nodded. If it was quiet enough and she listened closely, she could hear crickets chirping in the trees. Spontaneously, she wondered aloud, "In a room full of people, would you still choose to be with me?"
"Better question, why am I in that room to begin with?" Sua's words were now slightly slurred. She leaned her head against Mizi and whispered, "There wouldn't be a choice. It's always you."
