I promise

Blake's heart was thundering in her chest, her breathing was coming in quick but shallow gasps. Her grip tightened around the steering wheel as she turned down her street. Her entire body was buzzing with anxiety. There was a tightness around her heart that seemed to just get worse with each passing second. A painful lump forming in the back of her throat as her eyes started to prickle with unshed tears. She pulled into the driveway and barely had the car in park before she was throwing the door open and racing up the walkway.

Her legs were shaky, her steps unsure and unbalanced as she made her way to the front door. Her hands were trembling so badly by the time she reached the front step that her keys slipped through her fingers, landing with a metallic clang against the ground.

'For fucks sake, pull yourself together.'

She quickly picked her keys up off the ground and after three tries, got them in the lock and pushed the door open.

"YANG!"

There was no response.

The house was eerily quiet. The only sound she heard was the hammering of her own heart in her ears. She quickly shut the front door and started making her way throughout the main floor of the house. Her eyes darted around in the dark, as she half walked half jogged down the small hallway, quickly looking around the living room and kitchen as she passed.

Her right ear flicked upwards towards the bedroom at the sound of someone stepping on the loose floorboard that was just outside the master bath...the one Yang had said she would fix...a month ago.

Blake took off towards their bedroom, taking the stairs two at a time. Her chest tightening, gasping for air as she hit the landing, her fear and anxiety making her breathing erratic.

She pushed their bedroom door open with a shaky hand, peering around the doorframe. And let out a sob when she saw her girlfriend walking across their bedroom. She ran the few short steps across their bedroom and flung herself at her girlfriend, wrapping both arms around her neck as Yang took a couple stumbling steps backwards.

Yang's eyes widened in shock and concern as Blake buried her face against Yang's neck. Yang instinctively wrapped her arms around her girlfriend's waist, rubbing what she hopped to be soothing circles against the small of her back. Blake's entire body was shaking and trembling with the force of her sobs, Yang's neck becoming damp from all the tears. Blake slid her arms from around Yang's neck, down her chest so she could grab onto Yang's collar. Blake fisted the cotton material in her hands, pulling on it so strongly that Yang was forced to bend down. Yang moved one of her hands upwards to gently cup the back of Blake head before pressing a loving kiss between her cat ears, "Blake, baby? What's wrong? Did something happen?"

From the way Blake's ear pinned back and her crying stopped, and was quickly replaced with an angry growl, Yang knew she had said the wrong thing. Yang swallowed thickly as Blake pulled away from her, anger and hurt swirling in pools of gold.

"What's wrong!? Did something happen!? Are you serious!?" Blake curled her fingers into fists and pounded them against Yang's chest, not hard enough to cause the brawler pain, but hard enough to get her point across as a fresh wave of sobs tore through her body, "R-Ruby c-called, she she said, she said y-you," Blake's sobs were getting worse, her breathing sharp as she gasped in air, nearing the point of hyperventilating, "you g-got…" Blake grabbed onto Yang's collar once more, pulling her closer so she could rest her forehead against her shoulder for a second before she pulled away again and slammed her hands against Yang's chest once more, "You...Y-you got hurt!" Blake kept hitting Yang's chest as she cried, but she was quickly becoming exhausted as each hit became weaker than the last, "I-I, I thought, I t-thought" She was completely hyperventilating, she could barely get a breath in let alone get her words out, "y-you p, promised to be m-more care-careful! I, I, thought, I thought...i thought I lo-lost you!"

Blake sagged against Yang's body, her own completely spent and she was no longer able to keep herself upright as her sobs continued to rip through her body. She let Yang pick her up and carry her over to their bed, missing the silent tears streaming down her girlfriend's face.

Yang laid them both down, pulling Blake on top of her and gently tucking her head under her chin. She held Blake tight and rocked her as best she could in this position, alternating between pressing soft loving kisses to the top of Blake's head and whispering reassuring words in her ear.

It took time but eventually Blake's sobs slowed and morphed into sniffles and the occasional hiccup. Yang smiled softly as Blake slid her hand to lay across her heart, pressing softly against Yang's chest. Yang knew that Blake pulled comfort from hearing or feeling her heartbeat, having woken up more than once with the girl curled up on top of her, her ear pressed against her chest.

"Blake, baby, I am so so sorry I scared you, I-" Yang swallowed thickly, trying to force down the lump that had formed in the back of her throat, "I never wanted to make you worried. I'm, I'm okay. And I promise you I am not going anywhere."
