Chapter 31
“what if your name was a curse word?” Barton asks Natasha and Maria one day. they are standing on the helicarrier bridge, with absolutely nothing to do and bored out of their minds. they were supposed to be watching the junior agents, but the room is pretty quiet given that Maria has a history of emotionally scarring her agents and Nat has a gun within arms reach.
Maria makes a hand signal, telling them to wait. The Russian spy and the archer watch as she makes her way over to the public address system.
“Motherfucker, will you please come down to the bridge.” the Commander deadpans.
Clint bursts out laughing, lowering himself on the floor to refrain himself from falling. Natasha joins in quickly, and Maria grins at them.
“come on, let’s see if someone actually comes down.” Clint chuckles out of breath as soon as he stopped laughing.
“what if we used names as curse words though.” Natasha says. The redhead raises her voice. “Candice off, go James yourself!”
The trio laughs as one of the nearby rookies startles. Natasha gives him one last dirty look for good measure. They watch him hurry away with the speed of light on his side.
Maria is shaking with laughter. “That poor man!”
“That poor man indeed. I wouldn’t be surprised if you’re all called into HR in a few days.” Natasha, Maria and Clint all then around at once to see Fury standing behind them.
“Sir.” Maria says.
“You called me.” Fury watches patiently as the realization slowly dawns upon his three favorite agents. Clint and Maria’s faces redden and Natasha nearly doubles over in silent laughter behind them.
“S-sir.” Maria stutters.
the corners of Fury’s mouth pull a bit, the closest he has ever come to smiling, Maria tells them later.
