Drunken Night
They drove around in Lucifer's car for a while in comfortable silence, neither wanting to broach the subject of Penelope. They found themselves talking about the case and how Kami thought he was right. Junior didn't kill his father. But neither of them could understand why the food had been laced with heroin if Junior wasn't the killer. Lucifer took them back to the restaurant, hoping they could find some evidence to help the case, but instead they found a new suspect.
"Well, this doesn't seem suspicious at all" Kami announced, as they spotted Anne, the Sous Chef grabbing something from behind one of the industrial ovens.
"Bravo. That's a brilliant hiding place. No wonder the police couldn't find it earlier" Lucifer congratulated, as Anne stiffened.
"What are you doing here?" She questioned, looking like she was desperate to flee the scene.
"We came here looking for evidence…looks like we'll leave with the killer instead" Kami exclaimed, coming to stand beside Lucifer.
"I told you, I would never do anything to hurt Javier" Anne insisted, trying to hide the bag of powder in her palm.
"You seem genuinely upset. Like you didn't want Javier to die. You humans are quite the paradox, aren't you? You're always killing your loved ones—" Lucifer was cut off, as Kami came to a realisation.
"Unless the poison wasn't meant for him. You meant to kill Junior, didn't you?" Kami scoffed, as Anne's jaw tensed.
"…Oh. Hence the drugs. He'd die a grisly death, and we'd assume he simply got a bad fix. Oh, that is very clever" Lucifer exclaimed.
"Clearly not clever enough. You killed your father figure instead…damn, that's gotta' hurt" Kami went on, taking a step forward.
"That ungrateful kid did not deserve this place. He was given everything, and he threw it all away. But it didn't matter. 'Cause he was still the favourite. Because he was blood family" Anne muttered, darkly.
"Or maybe it's because Javier saw he had a little serial killer in the making in his kitchen?" Kami pointed out, raising an eyebrow.
"Junior was worthy of his father's love. And he had a chance at redemption until you ruined it" Lucifer added, storming forward, the words having struck a chord with him.
Before either of them could stop her, Anne had sent one of the fryers tumbling over, the oil spilling out around them. Kami's eyes widened as she saw Anne light a match a second later, as she grabbed Lucifer's arm and hauled him away just in time as the oil on the ground ignited. She watched in horror as the flames grew throughout the kitchen, due to almost every surface having some sort of flammable object near it. She pulled Lucifer down near a metal table where the fire was yet to touch, her eyes darting around to find an exit.
"Are you okay?" Kami asked, turning to Lucifer.
"This place can't possibly be up to code" Lucifer muttered, as she rolled her eyes.
"Well, if we make it out alive I'll help you file a complaint" Kami scoffed, trying not to freak out.
"Oh no, this is not how it goes down, not by a long shot, Dad" Lucifer grumbled, looking to the ceiling.
"The fire hasn't spread so much over there; we could make a run for it and…why are you taking your clothes off?" Kami gaped, as Lucifer stripped off his jacket.
"Lucifer, I'm not gonna' have sex with you while the building burns down around us—" Kami began, but he cut her off.
"While I like how your mind works, I was planning to wrap this around you as I carry you out" Lucifer replied, handing her his jacket.
"What about you?" Kami frowned.
"I can handle a little fire, I am the Devil after all" Lucifer told her, with a small grin.
"No, you'll get burnt" Kami shook her head, vehemently.
"I really don't think we have time to argue—" Lucifer started, but Kami stopped him.
"I don't want you to get hurt because of me!" Kami exclaimed, her blue eyes boring into his.
"And I refuse to let anything happen to you" Lucifer retorted, surprising himself with his words.
"…Come on now, or I'll throw you over my shoulder" Lucifer insisted, pushing himself to his feet.
Biting her lip, Kami reluctantly pulled Lucifer's jacket over her shoulders, careful to protect her arms. She opened her mouth to speak, but the words died in her mouth as Lucifer was suddenly pulling her into his arms, bridal style. Before she could slip out of his arms, Kami wrapped her arm over his shoulder, bringing their faces closer. Lucifer's eyes flickered down to hers, seeing fear flash over her features, leading him to draw her closer. He then set off running through the burning building, trying to avoid the flames wherever he could, as the heat around them became almost suffocating. He let out a shuddering breath when he finally saw the front doors and sprinted forward to kick them open. He welcomed the cold night air as he rushed down the front steps, letting out a cough as he did so, having inhaled some of the smoke. Kami jumped from his arms as soon as they reached the ground, looking behind them to see a beam fall where they had been standing only seconds ago. Lucifer hissed as he felt a stinging pain radiating from his arm, taking a closer look to see a nasty looking burn underneath his scorched shirt. Kami's forehead wrinkled with guilt, knowing if he had been wearing his jacket he likely wouldn't have gotten burnt.
"The Devil gets burnt by fire. Could this be more ironic?" Lucifer complained, dismissively, as Kami gave him a strange look.
"What?" Lucifer frowned, tilting his head when she continued to stare.
Before he could stop her, she had jumped into his arms, pulling him into a tight hug as she buried her face in the crook of his neck. Lucifer let out a low chuckle as he wrapped his arms around her waist, not quite understanding what the hug was for, but enjoying it anyway.
"You saved my life" Kami mumbled, as Lucifer rubbed her back slowly.
"Well, I couldn't rush out of there alone, could I? How would that look?" Lucifer teased, closing his eyes contently.
"I mean it, Lucifer…thank you" Kami exclaimed, pulling away, but keeping her hands touching his shoulders.
All Lucifer could do was nod, averting his eyes to the ground as he felt his face flush, and he knew it wasn't due to the burning building beside them. No one ever looked at him like that…like he was…good.
On the other side of the City, Chloe had no idea what danger her sister had just been in. She had finished cleaning up in the kitchen after their disaster of a dinner and had been avoiding her mother ever since. However, Penelope didn't seem to understand her daughter's need for space, and soon insisted they needed to talk. She couldn't stand to lose her daughter. Not Chloe.
"I think you should leave" Chloe announced, as Penelope's mouth went slack.
"Excuse me? This is my house!" Penelope gaped, as Chloe kept her back to her mother, not wanting to look at her.
"No. This is the house I raise my daughter in. Your grandchild, who you've barely seen in the last five years" Chloe explained.
"Is it any surprise I don't come here often when I'm treated like this?" Penelope scoffed.
"Enough, Mom! Stop acting like you're a victim in all this! We treat you this way because of how you act, because of the things you do!" Chloe shouted, whipping around to face her.
"I know I could have handled things better with Kami, but don't act like I haven't always done my best for you Chloe" Penelope insisted, firmly.
"You're right. Perhaps you were a little overbearing…pushy, when I was growing up, but you were a good Mom. And then Dad died. And you became obsessed with getting a new child, something that could love you better than I could—" Chloe began, but Penelope stopped her.
"It wasn't like that" Penelope shook her head, but she couldn't meet her daughter's gaze.
"I hated the idea. I felt like I wasn't good enough. I couldn't understand why you wanted another daughter…and then we found Kami. And I just felt this…connection with her, straight away. And it was like you wanted to punish me for that. From day one, I had to look after her" Chloe went on, tears beginning to well in her eyes.
"I tried, Chloe" Penelope mumbled.
"…Did you? Because you know what I remember? Being twenty and suddenly having this six-year-old girl to look after. I'm the one who took her to her first day of school. I'm the one who patched up her cuts and bruises. Went to every single one of her school plays. I'm the one who had to hold her as she had night terrors so bad she couldn't stop shaking for hours!" Chloe cried, angry tears now streaming down her face.
"If I could go back and change things I would. I'd be a better Mom, to both of you" Penelope sobbed, the guilt clear on her face.
"Is it true what she said? That you told her to leave? That I would be better off without her?" Chloe stuttered, brushing away some of her tears.
"I did what I thought was best" Penelope replied, making Chloe scoff.
"For you. I spent years wondering what I did wrong. Fearing that one day Trixie is going to leave me just like…like my first daughter did" Chloe admitted, shaking her head.
"I'm sorry, Chloe. I don't know what else you want me to say" Penelope sighed.
"I need some space, Mom. To process all of this…I want you gone by the morning" Chloe exclaimed, as Penelope opened her mouth to argue.
"I think that's what's best" Chloe repeated the words her mother had said only moments ago, as she turned away from Penelope.
She held on tightly to the kitchen counter as she heard Penelope let out a quiet sob, before footsteps told her she had walked away. Chloe scrunched her eyes shut, letting out a shaky breath that she hadn't realised she had been holding. She felt strange when she opened her eyes. Lighter. Like a weight had finally been taken off her shoulders.
Chloe had been distraught when she heard about the fire and had rushed to the restaurant, almost crying in relief when she saw Kami and Lucifer were alive. She insisted on taking Kami home, wanting to clean her up and watch over her for the night due to the smoke she had inhaled. Kami seemed more than happy to accept this, enjoying the attention from the older Decker. That was why Lucifer was so surprised when only a couple of hours later she arrived at the penthouse, with a half-empty bottle of vodka in her hand.
"What happened?" Lucifer frowned, noticing the tear tracks on her cheeks, as she stumbled towards him.
"I messaged Dan" Kami announced, throwing her head back as she took a swig straight from the bottle.
"Now, why would you do something silly like that?" Lucifer questioned.
"I apolo…apology…I said I was sorry for being a bitch. That we should talk…" Kami trailed off, slamming the bottle onto the bar counter so hard Lucifer was surprised it didn't shatter.
"I'm guessing he didn't feel the same?" Lucifer suggested, as Kami simply held out her phone to him, her lips drawn in a straight line.
I'm not in the mood for talking anymore. I was only using you to get closer to Chloe. She's the one I've always wanted. Not you.
Lucifer was glad that Kami was staring at the bottle of vodka while he read the text, as he felt his eyes turn red for a moment, a snarl leaving his lips. The next time he saw Daniel he was going to tear him a new one. Or perhaps he'd simply send Maze after him…
"I was worried I might have pushed him away…ironic, huh?" Kami chuckled, in a self-loathing tone.
"Clearly Detective Douche doesn't know a good thing when he sees it" Lucifer muttered, handing her phone back over.
"Right, just like my Mum didn't, right?" Kami scoffed, bringing the bottle back to her lips.
"I think you've had enough of that for tonight" Lucifer exclaimed, moving forward to pull the vodka out of her hands, causing her to pout in protest.
"You're right…I should mix it up a bit" Kami nodded, walking behind the bar, running her hands over the numerous bottles on the shelf.
"Bourbon? Really? What are you, sixty?" Kami teased, spotting that particular bottle.
"Says the girl drinking like she's in high school" Lucifer retorted, with an amused smile.
"Good point. Let's get the tequila out!" Kami announced, clicking her fingers.
"Or why don't you have a seat over here and tell me all about it?" Lucifer suggested, wrapping his arm around her waist and pulling her over to his leather couch.
"What, so I can tell you how the guy I've been crushing on since I was fifteen has been using me? Or…or how my Mom doesn't even care that I was in a fire? Or how about the fact that Chloe's always the one that people choose and I…I can't even blame them for it…" Kami trailed off, sniffling as a tear fell down her cheek.
Before he could stop himself, Lucifer was reaching out to brush the tear away, letting his finger linger for a moment. His chest felt tight as their eyes connected, her blue one's swimming with an emotion that he had rarely seen. Her next words made that tightness in his chest become almost unbearable.
"…Why does no one want me?" Kami questioned, in a quiet voice, her eyes dropping to the floor as soon as she had spoken.
Lucifer moved his finger to rest under her chin, forcing her to look at him, surprised by his uncharacteristic expression. She had never seen Lucifer look so serious; Kami was almost afraid of what he might say.
"I do, Kami. And that won't ever change" Lucifer told her, as Kami's mouth went slack.
Lucifer hadn't been expecting Kami to suddenly lean forward, feeling her lips brush against his for just a second. Instinctively, he held up a hand to stop her, as he pulled away, his forehead wrinkled. His body was clearly working before his mind, as he sat there with his mouth gaping, unsure what to do next. His heart beat quicker in his chest, as his eyes flickered down to see Kami had moved her hand to his chest, the warmth from her palm feeling welcome.
"What…what's wrong?" Kami asked, her eyes darting from his lips back up to his eyes.
"We shouldn't do this" Lucifer replied, his mouth dry.
Hurt flashed over Kami's features for a moment, as she seemed to come to her senses, darting away from him. She ran a hand through her hair, as she shook her head, coming to a realisation. She knew there was something going on between Lucifer and her sister, or at least there could be, what the hell was she doing trying to kiss him?
"I'm such an idiot" Kami muttered, dropping her head into her hands.
"No, you're not. But you are rather intoxicated. I doubt the Detective would be happy to hear I had kissed you in this state" Lucifer explained, as Kami let out a soft groan.
And there it was. It would always be Chloe for Lucifer. Just like with Dan. And her Mum. Chloe was the better person. The better choice.
"I should…I should go" Kami announced, pushing herself to her feet, feeling a wave of dizziness hit her.
"Mazikeen told me your mother kicked you out. You should stay here. My doors always open for you" Lucifer insisted, reaching out to steady her.
"But where will I sleep?" Kami pouted, as Lucifer tilted his head.
"I imagine on a bed. That is the common place for a human, is it not?" Lucifer murmured, as she gave him a look.
"Do you even have a spare bed?" Kami pointed out.
"Well, no. But I do have my bed over here with the finest Italian sheets, I've been told it feels rather—" Lucifer's rambling was quickly cut off.
"Where will you sleep?" Kami frowned.
"From the numerous sexual encounters I have had on this couch, I've found it is rather comfortable" Lucifer stated, indicating to the leather couch, as Kami turned her nose up.
"I'm not throwing you out of your bed, Luce" Kami argued, attempting to cross her arms, but being too drunk to carry out the gesture properly.
"We could always…share. We're adults" Lucifer suggested, as Kami nodded.
"Right. It doesn't have to been weird" Kami agreed.
"Exactly" Lucifer replied, leading her up the steps to his bedroom.
He watched with amusement as she flopped down onto the silk sheets, rolling onto her front, and immediately burying her head into the pillows. She wiggled around for a moment, before becoming comfortable and seeming to fall asleep almost instantly. It was then that Lucifer realised his heart was still beating faster than ever, combined with a strange tingling feeling on his lips. He brought his fingers up to touch his lips, as he looked down at the sleeping girl, a fond look in his eyes.
Kami felt something shining in her eyes as she slowly woke up, moving her hand to shield her face, finding light was streaming over her. She frowned as her eyes slowly adjusted and she found she wasn't sleeping in her own bed. Her mouth went slack as she felt something wrapped around her stomach and looked down to see a tanned arm touching her. She slowly turned, her jaw dropping open when she saw Lucifer curled against her, still appearing fast asleep. Butterflies danced in her stomach as he unconsciously pulled her closer, mumbling something contently. Kami let her eyes roam over him for a moment, as she tried to rack her brain for how she ended up in Lucifer's bed. She was quickly distracted when she realised Lucifer was shirtless, and…
"Holy shit!" Kami cried, when she felt something hard poking into her back, causing her to spring away.
Lucifer's eyes fluttered open just in time to see Kami falling out of his bed with a loud thud. He wondered for a moment what had caused the reaction, before looking down at his crotch, noticing his erection.
Ah.
"Uh, morning" Kami announced, from where she was now more or less hiding on the floor.
"Oh…yes, it is, isn't it?" Lucifer realised, wondering how long he had been lying beside Kami.
"Why am I in your bed?" Kami blurted out.
"My, my. You must have been more drunk than I realised" Lucifer chuckled.
"Oh God, we didn't..." Kami trailed off, peeking over the edge of the bed, with wide eyes.
"Did we ever! I must admit, even my stamina was draining by round fourteen, but you were so insistent" Lucifer grinned.
"No…ugh, seriously? I lose my virginity and can't even remember it? That is just—" Kami began, but Lucifer cut her off.
"Wait just a moment! You mean to say you've never had sex? Not with men? Women? Anyone?! Not even a quick fumble under the—" Lucifer began, but she was the one to cut him off this time.
"No. And if you ever tell anyone I'll cut your balls off" Kami warned him, pointing a finger.
"My lips are sealed" Lucifer smirked, making the gesture of zipping his mouth closed.
A loud beeping sound had Lucifer reaching over to his nightstand, picking up his phone as he sat up straighter in bed. His smirk only widened when he saw who he had received a text from.
"The Detective has a new case" Lucifer exclaimed, jumping out of his bed, butt naked, as Kami facepalmed.
"You might want to put some clothes on first" Kami scoffed, hearing him saunter over to his wardrobe, excitedly.
In the blink of an eye, he was wearing one of his classic black suits, showing no sign that he had been in bed only moments ago. Kami went to sit on his bed as she watched him do up his cufflinks, clearly in a hurry.
"Right, how do I look?" Lucifer questioned, holding out his arms.
"Wanting to impress my sister?" Kami asked, raising an eyebrow.
"You say that like it's a challenge" Lucifer smirked, rushing towards the lift, practically having a skip in his step.
"Don't wait up!" Lucifer called out, as the lift doors opened and he walked inside, leaving Kami on her own.
After making herself more presentable, she too went downstairs to Lux, her memories of the night before slowly coming back. She was definitely regretting drinking that bottle of vodka, as the bright lights of the club blinded her as she made her way out of the lift. Her memories were still jumbled but she knew she had made a pass at Lucifer and been rejected and she was pretty sure it had something to do with Chloe.
Which was fine. Lucifer and Chloe would be great together. They both deserved to be happy, so she should be happy for them—
"So, did you and Lucifer get down and dirty last night?" A voice pierced through her thoughts, making her come to a halt.
She turned towards the bar, unsurprised to find Maze standing behind it, clad in a tight leather dress as usual, one elegant eyebrow raised.
"Why? Are you jealous?" Kami teased, walking over to her, a grin spreading over her lips.
"Maybe I am" Maze shrugged, averting her eyes down to the counter, as she began to pour herself a drink.
"…Oh, I thought you and Lucifer were just friends…well, with benefits" Kami frowned, as Maze suddenly felt the need to face plant against the counter.
"Your lucky you have your looks" Maze muttered quietly, under her breath.
"Besides, nothing happened. We just slept together. I mean—not like that. In the same bed. Clothed. Well, I was…I'm not the Decker girl he's after anyways" Kami stated, pushing herself up onto a bar stool.
"I've been trying to get in the middle of that partnership for months now. Trust me" Maze grumbled, as Kami bit her lip.
"So, I'm right? He likes my sister?" Kami tried to clarify once and for all.
"Why else would he be down at the precinct all day and night?" Maze pointed out, watching Kami's face fall a little.
"I thought you had a thing for her ex anyway?" Maze inquired, curiously.
"Turns out he was just using me to get closer to Chloe. Shocker" Kami muttered.
"He was what?" Maze asked, a deadly look in her eyes.
Kami's eyes widened when she saw Maze grab two curved daggers from behind her back, twisting them around her thumbs. Something told Kami that Maze was not bluffing, she was ready to make Dan regret what he had said.
"I appreciate the gesture, but I've got this. I'm gonna' slap him so hard his head spins around next time I see him" Kami responded.
"That I'd like to see" Maze chuckled, taking a sip of her drink.
"So, when do I get a full tour of this place? I still haven't seen your room yet" Kami pointed out.
"My room?" Maze frowned, confused.
"Where you sleep" Kami clarified, but Maze was still lost.
"…Sometimes I lay on the bar counter if I'm bored—" Maze started, but Kami stopped her immediately.
"Wait, you don't even have a bed?!" Kami gaped, watching Maze shrug.
"Don't need one. When I sleep with someone, they always take me back to their place" Maze informed her.
"Maze, you need your own space. Somewhere that's just for you. Hell, you need to get out of this bar for the day" Kami insisted.
"And go where?" Maze questioned.
"Well, what do you like doing?" Kami queried.
"Having sex" Maze replied, easily.
"Okay, what else?" Kami exclaimed.
"Having threesomes" Maze stated, as Kami pinched the bridge of her nose.
"Anything not sex related?" Kami asked.
"I like violence" Maze shrugged, as an idea formed in Kami's head.
"Now that, I can work with" Kami smirked, ushering Maze to jump over the bar counter.
The bartender quickly did as she was told, swinging her legs over the counter, clad in knee-high leather boots. Kami was beginning to think the woman had a fetish, not that she was complaining.
"Where are we going?" Maze inquired, as Kami grabbed her hand.
"You'll see" Kami beamed, pulling the older woman along, finding little resistance.
Maze frowned at their joined hands, not understanding why she could feel her palms suddenly becoming sweaty. Or the excitement that was strangely bubbling up in her chest.
Kami couldn't believe her ears when she heard a sound she never thought she'd hear from Maze. A giggle. An honest to God giggle. A smile spread from ear to ear on her face as she watched the bartender slam the baseball bat in her hands onto the printer by her feet, sending plastic flying all over the room. Kami had been glad to find out there were still multiple 'Rage Rooms' in L.A where you could put on a face shield and smash up different pieces of equipment with a baseball bat. They were planning to throw some plates at a bullseye on the far wall next.
"I'm definitely asking Lucifer to put one of these rooms in Hell when we go home" Maze grinned, swinging her bat around.
"I thought you'd like it" Kami chuckled, watching the child-like glee on the other woman's face.
"Why am I not surprised to find you here?" A smug voice announced, as both Kami and Maze whipped around.
"Chlo? What's going on? I thought you guys had a case?" Kami pointed out, raising an eyebrow, finding Lucifer trailing behind her.
"That's sort of why I'm here. Mom's gone" Chloe told her, as Kami's forehead wrinkled.
"What? How come?" Kami asked.
"We both decided it was for the best—" Chloe began, but Kami cut her off.
"Because of our fight? Chlo, I didn't want to come in between you two. That's the last thing I wanted" Kami insisted, as Chloe shook her head.
"Mom needs to figure out whether she really wants to be our family or not. Because you're a part of it and that's not going to change" Chloe explained.
"Glad to hear it" Kami smiled back, almost shyly.
"I was thinking…we lost a lot of time being a family. So, why not come work with me? With us?" Chloe suggested, making Kami frown.
"Last time I checked I already had a job" Kami stated.
"A part-time job. You could do both. You could be a civilian consultant, like Lucifer! Well, not like Lucifer…actually probably the opposite would be good—" Chloe began, but Lucifer stopped her.
"Unbelievable" Lucifer scoffed, with a shake of his head.
"Aren't you worried you'll get sick of me?" Kami questioned.
"I put up with him, don't I?" Chloe grinned, as Lucifer raised his hands out in exasperation.
"What is this? Bashing Lucifer day?" Lucifer complained.
"Come help out on our newest case and see what you think. I know you love nursing, but you'd be good at this too. Making a difference! C'mon, you and Lucifer practically solved the last one by yourselves. And besides, we could really use your help—" Chloe went on, as Kami stopped her.
"Alright, alright. I'll help" Kami laughed.
"What about smashing the plates?" Maze pouted, crossing her arms.
"Not interrupting your little date, were we?" Lucifer questioned, a slither of jealousy in his voice.
"I was about to say the same thing" Maze retorted, unimpressed.
"Alright, play nice you too. I'll go pay for our session" Kami announced, removing her face shield and walking towards the exit, as Chloe followed her.
"…You didn't deny it" Chloe exclaimed, as Kami made her way to the front desk.
"Huh?" Kami frowned, fishing around in her jeans for some cash.
"You and Maze? Was this a…date?" Chloe tried to clarify, as Kami pondered over it.
"Is it a problem if it was?" Kami questioned, averting her eyes to the ground, nervously.
"No! No, it's just, uh…I never realised you were into…bartenders" Chloe mumbled, with a small smile.
"Well, wait until you hear I like waitresses too" Kami grinned, as the siblings burst into laughter.
