Chapter 20

The teacher has given us approximately 20 minutes to complete this math sheet. An unnecessary long amount of time, but the standards of education at this school are not particularly high. Well it would be possible for one to argue that this school’s goal is to teach children values other schools fail to teach, it’s nit true. Just marketing. A marketing attempt that has been rather successful in drawing in high profile students. What is education when compared to name? It’s all about branding and Hyakou has the best brand. Reputation over skill what an illogical world I’m living in.

A student besides me beings giggling. They’re passing notes around. Unsurprisingly yet even still my disappointment grows. Their work is not yet complete, and yet here they are acting as though they solved world hunger. To be so pleased while wasting your life away how pathetic. I suppose I cannot be one to judge others though when here I sit and do nothing.

I have completed my work after-all the assignment only really needed approximately fives maybe ten for the slower worker. I should be reading, studying, planning...anything useful would work, but I’m not. Instead I counted the number of dots on each ceiling tile on four different ceiling tiles and averaged the total. There are approximately 167 dots per ceiling; I should count more tiles to get a more accurate result, but I have begun to lose interest. This has failed to accomplish its purpose, that being distracting me from the President.

Outside the gates, she moved to touch my cheek. Oh how I longed to rest my head against her palm, to hear voice, but I moved away. It was necessary of course. The president’s touch has become a drug for me, and I simply cannot allow myself to fall for its temptation. That is why I pulled away. I must remain focused on my goal, and with the President’s touch upon me that goal seems to fade into the background. Desire will be my undoing if I allow it to take control. If I fail...if my self-control fails, the one who will pay is the President. Remember. Remember what is at stake, and remember what you must do.

I wonder though should I concerned with what Yomozuki wanted. I have never trusted the girl. The reasons behind her actions have always remained elusive to me, even more so than the President’s. What could be the reason behind this meeting? It was unusual enough that she sent me away, but to also send the Vice-president away. Hmmm. The only conclusion is that this issue is a personal one. It must be, and if this is true, how can I claim this to be any of my business. The President’s personal life has nothing to do with me, and to attempt to involve myself would both be unprofessional, and disrespectful. However, if this proves to be something that is a threat to the President, my only choice will be intervention. And under the circumstance that the President finds my intervention to be unacceptable, I will have to ignore her desires. It will—there’s a crash sounding behind me. I turn around.

One student in the back row sitting on the window half of the room, spilt their water. He calls out to one of the house pets, ordering the house pet to clean up the spill. The chain around his neck rattled as he bends down, the other boy kicks him to ground. Some of the other students chuckle. Our teacher looks away, and who can blame him? I will never understand the President’s fascination with this so called “aquarium” of hers.

Locating Midari can be a bit of pain at times. Predicting her movement is not completely impossible, but she occasionally haves moments where she is not where I expected. Under these circumstances it can be a bit irritating to search for her, but luckily for me she is in no way discrete.

The sound of cries from a boy increase in volume as a approach the hallway. Four more steps, and I turn my head to the left to peer down the hall. It’s three people. One boy is pressed against the wall Midari’s gun pressed against his forward. The other is standing a few feet away. The cries of the boy against the wall are incoherent, but the other boy’s voice is clearer.

“We won’t do it again. We promise. Please. please. We promise.” It appears that this is indeed the business of the beautification council.

“Midari.” Her head tilts to me, and she throws her hands back so her gun is pointing to the ceiling. She takes a step away from the boy.

“Oi Sayaka what are you doing here?” She’s smiling, and pointing her gun at me now.

“I heard crying, so I came to investigate.” She raises an eyebrow before looking back at the two boys. Midari swings her shooting arm around and points it at the two boys. She pulls the trigger. Nothing fires.

“Well what the hell are you still doing here?” The two start running away, one of them trips but quickly scrambles back to their feet. Midari approaches me with a smile and wraps her arm around me. She points her gun at me. “Are you attempting to interfere with my job?” She flicks the gun back away from me. I slip the piece of paper into her pocket.

“I do hope the safety is on.” I push her arm off me. “Do not forgot about the student council meeting today.”

“Oh so little faith. You wound me.” She holds a hand over her heart in exaggeration. I do not have time to deal with her. I have to met the President for lunch. I keep walking.

My plan to minimize my contact with the President is to simply read a book perhaps I’ll even try to observe her to make sure that this Yomozuki business truly is nothing to concern myself with. Still I have a feeling this will not be the case.
