Chapter 21
I should be amused...pleased with the discovery that my election has caused unusual behavior in Sayaka, yet here I sit alone feeling irritated. It’s not funny and it’s not intriguing. My stomach is churning, and I’m not quite sure why. I’m not sure of anything at the moment. Why is that such a surprise? Isn’t that why I choose Sayaka to be my secretary? I don’t want to understand her then the intrigue will fade, yet that it is not true now is it? I want to know why. I crave it. I must know. To understand Sayaka just a little more...wouldn’t that be lovely. Such an unusual change in myself. What could’ve caused it?
I’m gripping the armrests on the chair am I sitting in. I let go and look down at my palms. There is a line on both of them from gripping the armrest too tightly. How interesting. Oh Sayaka if only you knew, what you do to me. She can captive me if when she’s gone. Soon she’ll be here. She’ll knock against the door and bow to greet me. What should I do once she’s here? Should I ask her? No. No that doesn’t feel right. Perhaps I’ll tease her a bit though. That would certainly turn my mood around. How could I forgot though...that moment where she pulled away. I don’t want that to happen again. It hurt. I think. I don’t know why. This is indeed concerning. There’s a knock on the door. I look at the clock. The time is right, and the sound of knock is right. This is most certainly Sayaka.
“Come in.” Her posture is straight, and her face is cold. Oh Sayaka is when I’m teasing you the only time you drop your guard? She bows down.
“Good afternoon President.”
“Hello Sa~y~ak.” I cross my legs, and rest my head on my hand. Her eyes dart away for a moment before coming back to rest on my eyes. I smirk.
“Since we missed our meeting this morning do you have any paperwork that I need to complete before today’s Student Council Meeting?” Straight to business. That’s so like her.
“No. Just a tea. I love the way you make it.” Her eyes dart away again, and there is a faint hint of pink across her cheeks before it fades. Cute.
“Of course, President.” She moves over to the table, and begins making the tea. My eyes follow her movements. First she fills the kettle up with water, and then heats it. I wonder if I were to stand behind her and guide her movements what would happen? She’d blush I’m certain of that. Would she continue to make the tea or stop? Would her breathes speed up? Would she lean back into me? I uncross and recross my legs. How interesting it would be to see that.
She’s begun crushing the tea leaves up. I have a certain combination that I like. Sayaka memorized it, naturally. It was no trouble for her. Such a good secretary.
The water is boiling now. She pours it into a cup along with the tea leaves, and brings the cup over to me. Her hand is steady as she walks over. Never has she spilt a drop. She leans over next to me as she places the tea on the table.
“Thank you, Sayaka.” I move to grab her hand, but again she flinches away. I don’t like this feeling. I stare at the hand she pulled away before looking back at her face. Her face is blank as she nods her head. How interesting. I don’t like it. She sits down and starts to pull out her lunch.
“Did you eat earlier, President?” She’s not looking at me. No I have not. My appetite seems to have left after this morning. Runa left a bad taste in mouth, and the lollipop stick in my hand was quite frankly disgusting. So unsanitary.
“No. I’m not hungry at the moment Sa~y~ak.” I move my hand in gesture of nonchalance. I hope it gets the message across. This nothing for you to worry about Sayaka.
She simply nods. Good.
——————-
As she’s reading, she’s biting her lip, and her eyebrows are drawn together in concentration. It’s cute. Now and then she takes notes. Sayaka only you would take notes, while reading for your own enjoyment. I have never particular understood her love of books especially those math ones, but I cannot deny the fun I have watching her read them. She places her book back down, and she starts to write her notes down. Her foot starts tapping. Unusual. She normally only does that under stress. Is that book really so intense? Or could this be something else?
I look down at my desk. Hmm perfect.
“Sayaka dear could you come check this for me?” She looks up at her name, but she seems rather startled.
“President have you finally decided to complete some of your school work? This is great ne—-This is accounting documents for your family’s business. Are you sure this is not a mistake?”
“No it just so hard to find someone as reliable as you. I just wish for you to check their work.” She blushes at that.
“Of course, President. This is a rather interesting field in accounting...” I block out her words. To be honest even Sayaka’s voice couldn’t make me see what is “interesting” about accounting.
She moves to sit back down. She seems less tense now. Oh how is it that she finds comfort in more work? Such a strange girl. So hardworking.
——————-
Ririka is the first to come to the Student Council room.
“I have something I need to discuss with you tonight.” It might be a mistake, but I must ask someone, and she is my only choice after-all. The empty eyes of her mask bore into my soul. I truly find that thing to be utterly distasteful. How fun it would be to burn it. Ririka would be so mad...all the more reason to do it I suppose.
“Okay.” Her voice is cold from the modulator. I hate that too. There’s a knock on the door.
“Come in.”
“Hello President and Vice-president.” She bows before taking her seat and pulling out her notes. I suppose a little fun while waiting wouldn’t be to bad.
“Sa~y~ak, do remind what this meeting is supposed to be about?” She’s frowning now.
“President you really must read the briefings I write for you.”
“It slipped my mind.” A lie of course. I am well aware of what this meeting is about, but Sayaka’s disappointed face is too cute. Will you ever not make someone suffer for your enjoyment, Kirari? I would hardly call this suffering.
“President.” She sighs. “Besides the usual topics, Runa is supposed to bring a complete summary of all the gambles and purchases of the election chips as there is only one week left in the election.”
“Yes of course. Are you worried?” I simply can’t help myself now can I? I want to see her blush just once more today.
“Of course President. This is a very serious matter.”
She’s sitting up straight. Her tone is firmer than usual.
“Oh Sa~y~ak you doubt my abilities that much. How cruel.” Her face doesn’t change. Interesting indeed. Normally she’d scramble to try to justify herself. To take back the “insult.”
“Yes President. I’m worried that this is one game you cannot win.” She’s looking away now, down at her paper as if it has all the answers. You did this. I feel sick.
“Wouldn’t that be interesting though? A real change in my aquarium.” Showing fear would only her worsen her concern. This is clearly the best response. Her right hand tightens into a fist, and I can’t help but wonder perhaps I was wrong.
The door slams open before she has a chance to answer. Midari and Yuriko enter. They both take their seats; Midari proceeds to lean back on the back two chair legs. I wonder who will say something first. Yuriko or Sayaka.
“Please refrain from doing that Midari. Blood stains are quite difficult to remove.” Sayaka it is.
“You’re so funny Sayaka.” Sarcasm. I’ve never saw the appeal.
“I’m not trying to be funny. Blood is often as cited as one of the top ten most difficult stains to remove.”She looks at clock. “Yomosuki is late.” The door slams open.
“Oh Sayaka were you talking about me?” She laughs, skipping to her seat. What wonderful timing.
“Do you have the documents I asked for?” Straight to point. Sayaka is not interested in games today. She never is to be honest. Runa covers her face in fake shock.
“Oh no I forgot them. Too bad we’ll have to do it another day.” She pulls out her video game console. Sayaka’s fist is tightening again. Runa is starting to irritate me, and I’m well aware of what she’s trying to do. She’s trying to separate Sayaka from us.
“I will retrieve the papers. If you would excuse me President?” Seriously Sayaka that’s not your job.
“I think Runa should gather them herself wouldn’t you agree Sa~y~ak?” She seems to consider my reasoning. Certainly she will agree it is the most log—
“I can’t reach them. There on the highest shelf in my office” She’s laughing again. What an annoyance. “But I could go with Sayaka if you want President.” She’s smiling. Her eyes are predatory. As amusing as it would be for Sayaka to tase Runa, I just simply don’t trust her around Sayaka at the moment.
“I suppose it’s fine for Sayaka to retrieve the papers then.” Sayaka bows and leaves the room. The room remains silent for a few moments after Sayaka leaves. Now will this be amusing or aggravating? If Runa is involved the choice is quite clear especially after this morning.
She hops out of her chair, and skips to the other head of the table. “So did you ask her? Did ya. Come on tell if ya did.” Keeping this secret was going to impossible since Runa was the one who caught Sayaka, but I was hoping she would be able to keep the secret for a couple of days. Luckily the more dangerous students are no longer part of the the Student Council.
“Huh what the hell are guys talking about?” Midari is leaning up against the table. Her eyebrows are raised. Runa looks me in the eyes and smiles.
“Well Sayaka and Terano’s partnership of course. I saw them meeting up yesterday.” I can feel Ririka’s eyes on me. Angry perhaps? Maybe not though.
“No I did not ask her about it.” I rest on chin on my two hands. Normalcy is key. I’m unconcerned just as they should be.
“Oh you don’t need to I already know why.” It’s Midari. Hmm it wouldn’t be complete impossible for her to know, but still it seems unlikely.
Runa’s gripping Midari’s arms now. “Tell us. Come on.”
“Sayaka wants someone she can throw around.
If you know what I’m saying.” She raises her eyebrows suggestively. How unexpected. “She really just wants to pin someone down. Do all sorts of fun things. Terano’s the perfect choice.” I hear Ririka gasp besides me. Such an innocent girl. I wonder though Sayaka pinning someone down. I cross my legs. That is indeed interesting.
Runa is laughing hysterically now, Yuriko is frowning.
“You cannot say such things, Midari.” It’s hard to hear Yuriko’s voice over the cackling of Midari and Runa’s laughter. Ririka is shuffling besides me. Sayaka will be back soon. She cannot see this. I clear my throat to get their attention.
“Sayaka’s relation with Terano is none of your businesses, and I expect you to keep this in your mind. I advice you to avoid making your own assumptions. It is quite interesting though isn’t?” My dear Sayaka what are you doing?
There’s a knock on the door. They all nod.
“Come in.”
