Chapter 7

One hundred forty-four beats per minute. Around an average heartbeat after exercising, but I haven’t been exercising unless you count jogging like 13 meters as exercise. Even if I were to believe that that is an exercise, it wouldn’t change the fact that the reason why heart is beating so fast is for a completely different reason. Her voice is echoing in my mind, the feeling of her breathe against my ear is haunting me. My face is burning and I feel that any moment my knees we give out and I’ll just collapse to the ground.

My hand is over my mouth, and I’m trying desperately to slow my panting breathes, but with the echo of her touch I just can’t. The sound of footsteps reach my ear, but still my attempts to calm my heart end in failure. What a pathetic display of lack of self-control.

“Oi Sayaka what are you doing leaning against the wall?” Midari...not the worst person to find, but certainly not the best. I’m such a disaster really; I should be mad at the President for this cruel game, but I just can’t. She’s closer now, and I know she can hear my heavy breathes and see my blush. She starts to hysterically laugh. “Sayaka did you masturbate in school? What a badass... Who knew you had it in you? So how was it? Awesome? Personally I think there isn’t anything quite like it. That rush—“

“No I didn’t participate in such degeneracy.” My heart is slowing down. Nothing calms me down quite like the thought of Midari masturbating in school. She is truly a shameless girl.

“Huh” She throws her head back in disappointment.“Well damn I finally thought you did something interesting. Should’ve know... you’re just boring old Sayaka like always. Then it was the President.” I start moving away from her towards my class, and she follows after me. The President an accurate assumption, but who else could it be. Unfortunately Midari is quite aware of my feelings towards our president, and naturally she teases me for it as it is written in her very essence.

“No.” A lie. There’s a pause of silence. Out of the 43 conversations the two of us have had about the President and mine’s relationship, Midari has allowed me off the hook with a lie 26 times. Meaning there’s a 60% chance she’ll change subjects. This percentage is most likely inaccurate as I’m certain they’re other variables that I am unaware of you. She may simple, but Midari is quite complex and sometimes her though proceeds is difficult fir me to follow. Either way I truly hope this one of the times she leaves it be.

“One of my beautification members saw you speaking with Terano.” Now this is a surprise of the 27 predictions I made on what Midari would say this was not one of them. The genuine concern in her voice is even more of shock. Besides the President Midari is one of the few people I trust, I’m certain she doesn’t want the Totobami girl as the new president...she’s far too boring for Midari like me. Perhaps, I should trust her with this, with my plan. I have stopped walking now, and I move to pull Midari in an empty classroom.

“She came to speak with me.” Start simple to see if Midari is actually interested or if she’s just trying to pass time

“What about?”

“What I think about the President.” Midari’s smiling now.

“Did you tell her that your soul belongs the President and then tase her?” She’s only partially joking and maybe I would have done that with an easier opponent, but Totobami is too dangerous to regard as a student
who would be differed with the pain from a taser.

“No.” Midari’s face is serious now; she steps forward. So the concern was indeed genuine and not just a trick of my eyes.

“You’re trying to get close to her. What for the President? She’s not worth it.” It is always a concerning turn events when Midari is the one of us who is thinking logically, but the President is worth it. I’d give my life to keep her safe. Love has been the death of my logic. And I have been content to stand aside, while it happens, and how could I not when the President is the one standing besides me.

“I must and yes of course it is for the President.” She’s scowling now. Will she leave or stay?

“Fine. What the hell is our plan? Jesus you’re such a fucking idiot....Wait I got a plan.” She’s smirking now. I shouldn’t encourage her, and yet my desire for knowledge is strong even when I know it will idiotic.

“What.”

“You pick Terano out of her wheelchair. Then start reading her that book you were reading the other day. She’ll break within ten minutes.” What book did I read recently in front of Midari? Oh yes.

“Zero: the Biography of a Dangerous Idea?” It was quite an interesting read. Not my favorite book about mathematics, but still amazing. I doubt that it could ‘break’ anyone.

“Yes I read a single page, and the urge to blow my brains out was so strong I pulled my gun out. I couldn’t imagine the pain of being trapped while someone read it to me.” That’s a bit of an exaggeration it is an amazing piece of literature I even recommended it to the President...she seemed uninterested. Are math theory books not enjoyable for the general population? Most likely they are far less popular, still they can’t be that bad? What about them do people find unenjoyabl—“Sayaka it was joke. Don’t take everything so seriously.”

“I see. I must go to class. Do I have to escort you or will you attend class without my presence?”

“Very funny Sayaka. Your humor is amazing.” She’s being sarcastic, but quite frankly I thought it was humorous. “When are we going to discuss our actual plan?”

“Tomorrow after the Student Council Meeting. I do not have work that day.”

Midari working with me on something so important; this may have been a mistake.
