Ok so,
House Elves can have magic bonds with their masters. The Potters have a house elf who they have said magical bond with. If house elves have the bond, they can sense when their masters are in mortal peril. When Voldemort shows up on Halloween, the Potter house elf knows, and was quick enough to apparate the family out. The Potters were saved. Wizards and witches everywhere now have a new appreciation for house elves. The Potter house elf is now known as The Elf Who Knew.
