The Parental Disagreement
“Kara,” Lena tiredly said while entering the living room, interrupting the conversation among their guests. “Dawn doesn’t want to sleep,” she announced, and the two-year-old in her arms stretched her little arms towards the blonde with a giggle.
Kara grinned and rushed to her wife’s side. “Does my little sunray want floaties?” she asked and picked up her giggling daughter. She slowly floated a few feet off the ground, holding her baby in her arms. “I will be right back” she whispered and floated towards Dawn’s bedroom, knowing by the time she would reach it the girl would be asleep.
Lena smiled as she watched her wife disappear down the hallway. She turned around and her smile dropped a bit. Clark was frowning, glancing between Kara and his sons. Jonathan, Jordan, Alex and Liran were all sitting on the floor playing with toys or drawing on papers.
“Everything okay?” Lena asked when Clark turned to his wife with a worried look. She walked back to her seat while looking at Clark with curiosity.
The man looked at Lena and cleared his throat before speaking. “Everything is alright,” he smiled.
“Dawn is asleep,” Kara announced with a proud smile. “When that girl starts flying, I don’t know how we will keep her on the ground,” she added with a chuckle and took a seat next to her wife.
“Do you think,” Clark spoke but was interrupted by Lois, who was squeezing his knee like that would do anything other than getting Lena’s attention.
“Kara, I read your last article. It was amazing. You really capture the reader's attention without forcing their opinion to one side.” The brunette said and Kara grinned.
“Well, I learned from the best.” the blonde replied with a grin. The two reporters fell into a conversation about the article and the research behind it.
“Do you think showing your powers in front of the kids is a good idea?” Clark interrupted with a serious face.
“Excuse me?” Kara said with a baffled expression.
“Kara, showing your powers in front of the kids,” he glanced at the clueless children on the floor “will make them question what their human moth-”
“They know I’m not human.” Kara cut him off. “They know who I am,” she added.
“They do?” Lois asked, surprised.
“Of course they do. They are half Kryptonian, they need to know about their heritage.”
“They are too young to know and keep this secret.” The man said and rubbed his forehead.
“Well, I understand that it’s hard for kids to keep secrets, but that should not stop you from teaching them about where they are from.” the blonde replied.
“They are kids. If they say ‘my mom is supergirl’ it won’t alert anyone. So many kids say that about their parents.” Lena added. She did a whole research on it before they sent Alex to kindergarten.
“Kara,” Clark sighed.
“Jeju, look.” Alex suddenly announced and the six-year-old stood from his seat on the floor and jumped to the coach, clearly floating a bit. “I drew us flying through the sky,” he added when he clumsily landed on the couch next to the blonde.
“Alex, what did we say about flying in the house?” Lena warned, trying to hide her smile from Kara’s mini replica.
“Do not do it without Jeju’s help because sometimes it doesn’t work.” the little boy said with a pout.
Kara nodded along while placing her son on her lap to look at the drawing he was holding better. “Now let me see yo-”
“Your son has powers?” Lois asked with surprise. She then looked at her shocked husband and then at the boys who were still playing with the toys.
Lena and Kara looked at the couple confused. “Have your boys not developed any powers yet?” Lena asked.
“Alex got super strength at age four,” Kara informed. “So your boys will start showing powers soon too,” she said while glancing at her four-year-old nephews. “It would be good if they knew about them beforehand,” she whispered.
“No, they,” Clark sighed and looked at his sons. “They are half-human. I didn’t think… I don’t think they will get powers.” he declared with a frown.
“Our kids are half-human and Alex clearly got powers.” the ravenette retorted.
“Yes, but our kids were not made in a lab.” Clark quickly replied. He snapped his mouth shut and looked at his cousin with wide eyes. “Kara, I’m sor-”
“Sweetheart, can you take your brother and cousins to the game room.” The blonde said to her son.
The little boy looked between his mother and uncle before nodding. Kara placed him on the floor and he quickly walked to the other boys and convinced them to go to the other room.
“Kara,” Clark tried again, but the blonde raised her hand, motioning for him to wait until the boys closed the door in the other room. When the door closed with a soft click she nodded.
“How dare you!? ” Lena exclaimed with anger and stood.
“Lena, I didn’t mean to offend you.”
“You did though. You offended both of us and you offended every couple we have helped have a child with their DNA with our “lab”!” The ravenette exclaimed.
“You also offended me and our culture,” Kara said and stood next to her wife, anger clear on her face. “Kryptonians used the Genesis Chamber for centuries and unlike you, I was created in the Genesis Chamber.”
“I know bu-”
“Do you know though? Because as far as I’m aware you barely know anything about Krypton. I blamed myself for years that I did not land with you so I could teach you but,” she shook her head “You never asked me about our planet. You barely knew Kryptonian or our celebrations and traditions and you never asked me about them.”
Lena looked at her wife with worry. Kara had talked to her about this topic so many times, but she never thought the blonde would actually confront her cousin about it. “Darling,” she tried to move close to the blonde, but her wife pulled away. The ravenette glanced at Lois who had the same worried expression.
“I always hated myself for not being able to pass down our culture to you, but it wasn’t my fault. You were raised as a human and you had someone who came straight from Krypton to answer all your questions, but instead of asking about our planet, you dropped me at the Danvers and you barely visited me!” Kara shook her head in disappointment. “Now I have a chance to pass my culture down to my children and you tell me I should not? ”
“I just think it’s dangerous. They are just kids and telling them such a big secret-” the man shook his head.
“So for how long do you think I should have lied to them?” Kara questioned with a scoff.
Clark glanced at Lois who had a concerned expression before looking at the floor.
“Were you ever going to tell them?” Lena asked.
“We are not sure if we'll ever tell them since there is a huge chance they won’t have powers.” Lois pointed out.
“Especially so young, Kara. Your kids might have been created to be geniuses but ours are norm...” Clark stopped when Lois elbowed him.
“No, please, continue,” Kara snarled and took a step closer.
The man took a deep breath and spoke with a steady voice, “We want our kids to grow up being normal. Not learn how to fight criminals or compete with each other.” he glanced at Lena. “I want my kids to have friends and have a good childhood, unlike mine. Unlike ours .” he pointed out with a sigh. “I don’t want them to stress about if their dad will come home after a big fight or want to get into crime-fighting at a young age. I just want them to be normal!” he exclaimed one more time, inhaling deeply.
“I think it is time for you to go home,” Kara uttered with unnerving calm. “I am not gonna tell you how to raise your children and you should not tell me how to raise mine, but I do think keeping the truth a secret will not end well.” She glanced at her wife, remembering how she almost lost her.
“The kids are this way.” Lena told Lois and the two women walked towards the game room while glancing at the two Kryptonians in a growing concern.
“You know Lena and I had a long conversation about how we would combine our DNA. It wasn’t taken lightly. We choose the Kryptonian way where we get the best part of our DNA to create a child because that’s how we did it on Krypton, Kal. So yes, they are more advanced but that is because I want to continue the Kryptonian and El bloodline.”
“Ready Clark?” Lois asked, holding the hands of the twins.
The man nodded and grabbed their coats. They moved towards the door, saying goodbyes and empty promises of meeting again soon.
“I will always be here if you need me, Kal,” Kara promised, taking in her cousin's troubled features.
“I will always be here for you too, Kara,” Clark replied with a nod before the door closed, obscuring him from view.
“I turned on the red sun lambs a few minutes ago. Can I touch you?” Lena spoke in a low voice.
Kara looked at her hand, opening and closing her fist to ensure her super strength was gone. She nodded and in a swift move, Lena turned around and hugged her.
“Mom? Jeju?” Alex spoke with a worried voice and the couple pulled back a bit. “Did I do something wrong to upset uncle Clark?”
“No, my little bundle of creativeness.” Kara said and walked to her son. She easily picked him up even without powers and placed him on her hip. She placed multiple kisses on his face making him giggle. “Now, where is your drawing?” she asked.
The little boy’s face lit up and tried to jump out of Kara's arms. Kara tightened her grip around him and slowly placed him on the floor. "Be careful, little one. The red sun lamb is on and I know you don't feel the effect of it yet, but this is why your mom said to only fly with my help." she kissed his forehead with a small smile. The little boy nodded and rushed to where he left his drawing.
