Storms and clear skies
Huffed cries and whimpers woke her up, and her fight or flight instinct made her jump for the knife she always kept on her nightstand. She looked around, confused, looking for a threat that she quickly realized didn't exist. The muffled noises came from Enid's side of the room. She could see the girl moving. A nightmare, she assumed. How lucky the blonde was. But when she was about to return to her bed, a certain whisper caught her attention.
-Wednesday...
-Enid? -she left the knife, and quickly walked to the other's side. Her face was completely covered in tears, and she didn't seem to be able to wake up on her own -Enid, wake up. It's just a nightmare-she touched her shoulder, a little too roughly -Enid, stop.
When the taller finally woke up, she almost jumped out of the bed, her claws out and ready to strike. But she stopped when she recognized the small figure that was waiting beside her, arms crossed and pissed face. She gluped, retracting her claws and trying to dry her tears with the sleeve.
-Sorry I woke you up, I was having a nightmare.
-Yeah, I figured that much-she frowned a little, then sighted -You want to talk about it.
-It's okay, I don’t wanna bother you...
-I didn't ask. Is written all over your face. Now-she sat next to her-Spit it out.
-I just...it's not a big deal, you gonna say it's stupid.
-Enid.
-Okay, okay! Jeez...-she hugged her knees -I didn't make it in time. In my dream, I mean. I ran as fast as I could but I wasn't wolfed out and when I arrived, the Hyde, he had...-she had a hiccup -You were...-tears started to run free again, and she tried to stop them.
-Why are you still crying? It didn't happen. I'm right here.
-I know, I'm sorry, I just...I know you are okay but the fear is still there. Like I know, but my brain doesn't.
-Well, I am very much alive. Thanks to you-she reassured, and awkwardly patted her shoulder -Now, rest.
-Wednesday...you can tots say no, and you can get mad if you want to but...could you...stay? With me? Please.
-What do you mean by...? Oh-the shorter one looked at her in disbelief. The audacity to ask her to do something like that? But those eyes, full of fear...of losing her. She had to admit, the girl did deserve a reward. After a few seconds, she nodded.
-Really? -she quickly made room for her, beaming happiness -You're the best.
-Yes, I am well aware-she laid down, and soon after felt a strong arm gripping her waist -This never happened.
-I know, I know, no need to threaten me again-she adjusted herself a bit, making their bodies match perfectly -Let me have this.
-Good night.
-Night!
She waited for the other's breath to slow to relax completely, melting in her arms. An aggressive blush covered her face and ears, and she thanked the darkness for covering her. Althought, werewolves had dark vision.... well, no point in worring now. The blood loss must have been more notorious than she thought, for her to behave like that. She was almost...enjoying it. The closeness of her body, her warmth, the grip on her making her feel secure and protected... She felt nauseous and closed her eyes. It was too late for that, she could try to comprehend her feelings in the morning, when her eyes weren't closing without permission.
______________
The very persistent knocking on the door woke her up. Enid was still breathing deeply, and Thing was already running...tapping...towards the door, trying to buy extra sleeping time for the teens. Wednesday didn't move, just waited patiently, paying attention. The police, of course, requiring their presence. Thing ran towards the table, grabbed paper and pen, and returned, writing something that she supposed was a "give them some time", judging by the "okay, send them in half an hour to the principal’s office" the woman responded. She looked at the time, and opened her eyes wide in surprise. It wasn't too late for a normal student, but it was for her. The last time she slept for that long was years ago, when she drank a little too much arsenic and passed out. Pugsley’s fault, of course, she could never make a mistake like that. She wasn't surprised about Enid. The girl usually woke up pretty easily, but wolfing out for the first time must have been exhausting. She stared at the ceiling, with the blonde resting her forehead on her unharmed shoulder and hugging her tightly, listening to Thing throw the paper and return the pen. She heard his tapping and answered without looking, trying her best not to disturb her roommate.
-I know. Give me five...ten minutes, then I'll wake her up-not even three had passed before she heard the tapping again -Thing I said...oh-she moved a little, just enough to look outside the window. Ajax was there, hands in his pockets and a very confused face. How she enjoyed that view -Let him in. I'll wake her-she touched Enid’s face carefully, trying to caress her as sweetly as possible, given her lack of experience-C'mon, Enid, wake up. Ajax is here-she looked at the guy, already entering the room. His face alone was enough to make her day. Was that a hint of jealousy? Delightful
-Five more minutes, Wen...-she whispered, tightening her grip.
-Don't call me that-she pinched her cheek slightly -Good morning, Ajax.
-Morning-he answered, looking at them both-How your wounds going?
-Healing, slowly but surely. I'll be completely recovered soon.
-Cool, cool-he waited patiently, watching Enid letting the goth go and stretching- Is this like...a thing, between you two? I thought you were not into...touching.
-I'm not-she responded, finally getting out of bed-But Enid is the exception-she calmly walked to her wardrobe, grabbing some clothes and heading to the bathroom without even looking at the boy -Tell her the police is waiting for us at Weems’s office.
Thing managed to get in before she closed the door, and was fast to tap in disbelief while the girl washed her face, ignoring him. Once he was finished, she turned around, the smallest hint of a smile adorning her lips.
-You made it look weird on purpose. That's not okay. Cut that smirk out.
-Oh, please, don't be dramatic. Turn around-he did, and she started to get dressed for the day, with a bit of effort -I'm sure it's not that weird for...friends, to share a bed. If he gets jealous, that’s just a bonus.
-You are never sweet, yet you were just for him to see. Why did you do that?
-Felt like it. You're being almost as dramatic as him-she carefully did her eyeliner.
-I know you like her, but that's not the way.
-Never say that again-she almost stabbed her eye -That’s absurd. And a lie. And weren't you the one who forced me to get closer to the Hyde? Why would you do that if you suspected I have feelings for her?
-Well, Enid was already taken. And I didn't know he was a Hyde. I thought he was just dumb.
-I am not interested in Enid.
-Bullshit.
-Do you want me to cut off your fingers and stitch them upside down?
-Denial is a river in Egypt. You can't lie to me, kid. I've seen you grow up. I know you-he dodged a dagger -Be as mad as you want, but you know I'm right.
-Leave-she ordered -I said LEAVE-her fist hitting the closest wall was enough for the hand to obey.
-I'm just trying to help-he tapped, before opening the door, just for the girl to close it harshly.
-Oh wow. Is she okay? -Ajax, sitting at Enid’s desk, offered a hand for him to climb. He did, and the gorgon left him on the table.
-Does her wound hurt? I should go check on her-the girl jumped out of bed, where she was still sitting, waiting for the bathroom to be free.
-Good idea. She might need some help with her hair.
-I never thought I would see her without the braids. Looks like a different person!
-You didn't see her -Enid said, almost instantly, then explained, not wanting to sound rude -I mean. She is probably gonna hate that you saw her like that, so...better keep it a secret, okay?
-Yeah, sure, no prob. Well, guess I´ll... see you later?
-Yes! I'll text you when I'm done with the police, okay?
-Okay-he expected a goodbye kiss, but the werewolf was already heading straight to the bath -See ya, bud...-they shared a fistbump before the stoner finally left, closing the window behind him with sad eyes.
-Wednesday? Do you need help? -she politely knocked the door, and waited for permission.
-Come in-she was brushing her hair, trying not to hurt her shoulder -Ajax left already?
-Yup. Here, let me do it for you-without waiting for permission, she grabbed the brush, and just stepped behind her-Did you sleep well?
-...-she bit the inside of her cheek, thinking about the response. If she said yes, the girl could interpret it as a good sign, something she wasn't sure she wanted. On the other hand, saying no could end up being a huge disappointment, and seeing the girl like that didn't bring her as much joy as it should-A bit too warm for my taste. But I got a much needed rest.
-Is that a yes?
-You could say that, yes. I slept well.
-Great! -she moved to her side, and carefully started to braid-Same. I was SO tired...wolfing out hurts a lot more than I expected! I could feel my bones twisting! 0/10s, hope it gets better soon.
-You'll get used to it-she nodded once the girl finished, and she went for the second one with a proud smile.
-Mom is gonna freak out when I tell her. Maybe she'll even stop with the hate for a while.
-For a while?
-She'll find something else, I'm sure. That’s just how she is.
-She should be proud of you-the shorter frowned, infuriated by the mere thought of the woman being rude to Enid.
-Aw, you're sweet. Sorry, sorry. You're not-she panicked, scared of offending her friend.
-It's okay, Enid. I'll let it slide. This time-once she was finished, she turned around -I meant it. She should be proud of you-she avoided eye contact -I am-she saw the girl's eyes go wide open, and went straight for the door-We shouldn't make them wait. A mad interrogator is not ideal for a criminal.
-Yeah! Five minutes and I'll be ready to go!
-I'll go grab us coffee from the cafeteria. Two sugar cubes, oat milk, and cinnamon, right?
-You know how I like my coffee?
-I'll take that as a yes. Be quick.
She closed the door before the girl could reply, and ran for her coat and backpack. Thing jumped in it, and they left together, with the hand trying to talk to the girl, being completely ignored. He wasn't offended about it. For the first time, at least that he was aware of, she seemed...lost. Her cheeks were red, her breathing wasn't as composed as always, her eyes weren't focusing on her path but somewhere far, far away. He hid again, content. Just a few more unfortunate situations and uncomfortable conversations and she would be ready to accept her crush.
