The Dark of the Night
Hana rolled over and grabbed her phone off her bedside table. 2 am. It always seemed to be around 2 am when she woke up. The dreams were still so vivid in her mind. Unlike most dreams, they never faded as time passed. They weren’t dreams at all actually. She just relived all of her worst moments of her life every time she closed her eyes. Despite the fact her eyes were open, her mind started to drift again. Drifting back in time, to everything that happened…

Hana sat in her living room, 10 years old. It was getting late, almost midnight. But her dad didn’t mind. Not when they were getting to spend such good time together. “an dwae, appa! You cheated!” Hana yelled, frustrated. Her father laughed a little, setting down his controller. “Come on, Hana, how would I have cheated? You can’t win every time, you little diva,” he said. Hana pouted and crossed her arms, but she made the mistake of exposing her sides. Her father began tickling her, through all her whines and pleas, until she was relentlessly giggling.
“Stop! Stop! Jebal!” Hana pleaded. Her father finally stopped the torture, pulling his daughter into a tight hug. “I play these games with you, Tokki, because I enjoy it. I would never cheat you,” he says. Hana hugs him back. “I know, appa. I’m sorry.” She opens her eyes and looks up at him. But he suddenly looks older. Looking down, Hana realizes she’s older, too. Probably around 17 years old, when her gaming career was really on the climb. He looked so proud of her.
Suddenly, a long tentacle like arm shattered through the wall of their apartment. It pulled out, revealing a large red eye peering through. The Gwishin. The arm shattered back through the wall, and stabbed through her father, piercing him through the chest. Hana screamed, watching the light leave his eyes. Then it all faded into smoke. Hana was standing in her old managers office, being berated. She hadn’t been streaming enough. They needed to go shoot a commercial and have a photo shoot, and Hana had been eating too much junk. She wasn’t pretty enough, she was too fat, she was a little bitch that no one actually liked. Hana was worthless; D.Va was everything. That, too faded to smoke. She was in the MEKA hangar working on Tokki with Dae-Hyun when the alarm sounded. Then there she was, in her mech battling the Gwishin as they tried to reach Busan. She ejected from her mech, shooting Tokki to cause the mech to explode as she tumbled into the ocean.
And then she was back, sitting up in her bed, unable to catch her breath as the memories flashed through her mind over and over. Tears started rolling down her face as she made her way into the bathroom. She was gasping for air as she yanked open a drawer on the vanity and pulled out a razor blade. It was the only way to regain herself, find her way back to the here and now. So she did.

Hana awoke for the second time that morning at 9 am. She finally managed to fall back asleep around 6. There was a knock at the door, and it made her groan and roll out of bed. Her room showed no signs of her rough night, and her bandage, wrapped around her thigh, was hidden under her shorts. Hana peered through the peephole on the door to see Brigitte with a tray of food. This actually brought a smile to Hana’s face. Her first day with the swede had been great, and it was going to be really hard to keep her barriers up to the beautiful woman. “Hi!” Hana chirped as eh opened the door. Brigitte smiled, blushing when she realized Hana was only wearing shorts and a t shirt.
“Good morning! I jus- well I, ugh… here!” Brigitte said, looking everywhere but at Hana as she held the tray forward. On it was a stack of pancakes and a can on Nano Cola. Hana’s eyes go wide as she grabs the can and cracks it open. The announcer rambles on as Hana greedily drains the can, throwing it in the trashcan next to her door. “Where did you find Nano Cola? I love them!” Brigitte smiles, feeling much more comfortable at Hana’s excitement. “I actually have them ordered at the store in town. They keep them in stock because I love them so much! I thought you might appreciate one, but I also didn’t know if you’d had so many you’d be burnt out, or…” Brigitte rambled, trailing off when she noticed Hana was just staring at her. Hana giggled. Everything about Brigitte was adorable. “You want to come in? You can just sit that on the desk there,” Hana said, stepping to the side.
Brigitte entered her room, taking in the disarray of everything. “I hope I didn’t wake you, she said. Hana shook her head. “No, I just hadn’t got ready yet. I didn’t sleep the best last night.” Hana said. “Jag är ledsen,” Brigitte said, a look of concern on her face. ”Bless you?” Hana said, unsure of what curse this woman just cast on her. Brigitte laughed. ”It means I’m sorry, as in I’m sorry you didn’t sleep well.” Hana waved off Brigitte’s concern. ”It takes some time to adjust,” Hana said before digging into her pancakes. They were super buttery and delicious. She moaned as she devoured the entire plate, Brigitte beaming from where she sat on Hana’s bed. ”I’m glad you liked it! Papa said they’re just as good as the ones my Mama makes.”
Hana started to open her mouth when a booming voice from the hallway cut in. ”Brigitte! You were supposed to meet me in ze gym at 9! It is 9:04! Do I need to come drag you from ze bed?” Brigitte’s face paled. ”Sorry, I forgot what time it was. I was supposed to go to the gym with Rein,” Brigitte whispered to Hana. ”After I shower, would you... maybe...” Brigitte started, but Hana cut in. ”I would love to hang out,” she said with a smile. Brigitte beamed again. ”Okay! Um, yeah, I’ll grab a shower after the gym and meet you here!” She said, making her way to the door. She waved as she stepped out into the hall. ”Brigitte! Zere you are! I have been waiting to get started training!” Reinhardt’s voice echoed from the hallway as footsteps faded into the distance.
Hana finished off the pancakes, blushing slightly as she thought. Did Brigitte just make her breakfast? Why? Hana sighed. Brigitte was beautiful, strong, and super sweet. She seems to have a crush on D.Va. Hana would have to let her down gently. Despite finding Brigitte stunning, Hana could never be enough for her. Before she could continue with her thoughts, Hana’s phone buzzed. She actually had two messages. The newest one was from Winston, whose number she had gotten yesterday. ”Mrs. Song, I was just wondering if you had settled in okay? Is there anything you need?” It read. Everyone here was so nice, it seemed. Hana responded before opening the second message. ”So did you decide new place, new friends or are you going to let me know you made it?!?” Dae-Hyun said. She smiled. He was her best friend in the world. She sent him a quick promise to call later before putting her phone back down. Time to get ready for the day, and hide Hana from Brigitte under her mask. Maybe she could make the swede happy for a while before she saw through the D.Va act.
