Chapter 1

Kara’s been off, Alex could tell. Hell, they all could tell. Ever since Lena and Sam entered the door to her apartment it seemed like she had to try too hard. Alex wondered if she even knew she was acting this way, or if she was just so in love with her best friend she couldn’t think straight.

To Lena’s defense, she tried more than a few times to get Kara’s attention. With a glint of hope and too much love, Lena asked Kara to be on her team, but each time Kara replied with a small shake of her head, leaning closer to either her sister or Nia.

Alex feared to leave her alone after a night like this. Her sister was pure happiness for everyone else but could be a dark storm when it came to her own mind. After speaking to her wife, Alex decided to stay the night.

“You missed sister’s night the other day because of the interview at Catco. I must admit, it’s been hard having Kara Zor-el as a person of interest and not only Supergirl.”

Instead of receiving a happy smile, Kara slumped her shoulders. “I know. I answer to so many people now, I barely have time for myself. I’m sorry it’s been affecting our time together”

Alex shook her head quickly, hoping to redirect the conversation. “No, Kara, you don’t have to apologize to me. I just miss you.”

Kara freed the tense muscles in her shoulders before collapsing into Alex’ arms. “I miss you too”

Now that Kara was close, now that no one else was around, Alex had to force herself to push her sister a little harder. She wanted to stop the fight happening inside of her mind. “So, tell me, is it me or were you a little jealous today when Lena and Sam were sitting together so closely? Or when Sam squeezed Lena’s hand when they won the game?”

Kara pulled back, taking a seat on the couch with the same defeated expression she had before.

“No.” Kara replied quickly, confidently. Alex was ready to tease when an honest confession left her sister’s lips. “You need to have someone to be jealous, Alex. Lena is not mine to be jealous for.”

Alex couldn’t help but gasp, her heart breaking. She actually wished her sister would’ve pretended she didn’t know what she was talking about rather than taking this powerful stand. Lena was never Kara’s to lose, at least not in the way Kara wished she was.

“You don’t have to comfort me.” The blonde waved peacefully, a new look of tiresome on her features. She was devastated. “It’s my own fault that Lena doesn’t know of my feelings, but it’s also my responsibility to keep this friendship safe after years of telling her lies and breaking her trust”

“Sometimes I wish you were a little less noble.”

“Me too. But it is not the usual noble way I go, it’s about my world. This woman, no matter how far I go, she is my heart, and I can’t in any way hurt her again. She’s too pure, too good. If she hurts, so am I”

Alex, trying to fight back the lump in her throat, took a seat on the couch next to her shaking sister. It was as if she had all this information she had to get out of her, finally to tell someone how she feels even though most of her friends could already tell.

“Kara -,” Alex grabbed both of the girl’s hands cradling them to her chest. She needed grounding, to fight this panic raising. “But you deserve all of this too. You deserve Lena to protect you the same way you do her, more than that, you deserve Lena to know how much you love and cherish her and maybe have a chance of her loving and cherishing you”

“She doesn’t need me, Alex. She needs someone stable, who can help her unwind after a long day at work, someone who’s peace to her. Someone who she can be normal with.” Alex wished Kara looked anything but at peace with her words, but she looked like she respected Lena’s unaware decision not to be with her. “Someone like Sam”

Alex couldn’t help but choke, she had to break Kara’s bubble and it hurt a little knowing she’s going to do it. “Kara, um – Lena and Sam are not together. Before you question me of how I know, I can assure you that Sam is taken and is tight with someone who’s defiantly not Lena”

“How do you know?”

“Well, me and Sam are very close and she told me awhile ago about this woman she’s been seeing. They just celebrated their first anniversary.”

It seemed like the clocks started running through Kara’s head and while she wished her sister would decide to fly over and confess her love to Lena, Alex knew better.

“Ok, then she can find herself someone else. I just want her to be happy and loved, even if it has nothing to do with me.” Kara shrunk in her place, making Alex ever the more annoyed with her.

“God, you’re so stubborn sometimes it’s exhausting,” Alex barely mumbled under her breath, but Kara gave her a childish look, making sure she knew she was caught.

The next morning, after sleeping next to Kara and knowing that her state wasn’t any better after she woke up, Alex made her way to L-Corp. Lena had successfully bought her brother’s shares in the company made her best to change it for the better. Alex couldn’t be prouder.  Lena was an important part of her family’s life, and knowing that she kept being a force for good made her that much better than all the people who used to curse her for being a Luthor.

Lena’s secretary let her in after a few itching moments, giving her a polite smile and a nod. Lena was due to head out to lunch and Alex wasn’t going to keep her away from her plans for too long.

“Hey,” she nodded almost robotically, trying to ease her own nerves. Alex wasn’t usually one to meddle, but a part of her wondered if she really had other choices. “I need two minutes of your time”

Now facing Lena, Alex couldn’t help but spot dark circles around her eyes, stiffness in her shoulders and the quirk of her eyebrows. Something was off, she could tell right away, but Lena gave her a friendly smile and somehow she knew she was doing the right thing.

“Go ahead, I have the worst headache from my last meeting, I hate men.” Lena mumbled with a straight face, making Alex smile so brightly it was actually off putting.

“Me too, they’re the worse,” she replied with an easy smile. “That’s why we love women.”

Lena chuckled, nodding slowly. “What brings you here?”

Alex moved to the sofa, feeling out of place with all the white furniture and the wealth coming off from each of the paintings. Somehow, her sister felt right at home in there. But maybe it’s the person who owns the place, rather than the actual space.

“Kara loves you.” In a moment of lost concentration, she blurted it out. It’s not like she had anything planned, but this was definitely not the right approach.

“I love her too, and?” Lena seemed a little confused, not really following. Who could actually blame her? It’s not every day when the sister of your best friend confesses that said best friend is actually, wait. She didn’t say in love. So it’s not messed up after all.

“Look Lena, you are the most precious person to her. She cherishes you and wants nothing but the best for you,” Alex tried again, this time putting a little more common sense into her words. “But she fails to acknowledge the fact that the best for you is actually her.”

This time, something changed in Lena’s features. Her eyebrows dropped and those tired eyes faced the floor.

“She’s been in love with you for a while, I think, she won’t actually get into details but every time I mention her telling you how she feels she pushes me away and tells me you’re better off without her.” Alex confesses. She had so many more things to say, but she couldn’t do it without breaking her sister’s trust much worse. “Please, speak to her. She’s all up in her head and – please, you deserve a happy ending.”

Alex would’ve run away if she was the kind of person to run away from her problems, but she wasn’t. She stood up, walking towards the door with false ease. Before she had the chance to flee, Lena called out her name.

“Just tell me one thing,” Lena requests, seemingly much more well practiced at false ease than Alex. “Why was she acting so strange last night?”

“Oh, she believed that you and Sam are dating.” With that, Alex strides away from the office, wishing so unbelievably hard that Lena would do the right thing, and also wishes that her superpowered sister won’t be too mad.

Later that night, after spending some well-deserved time with her daughter and wife, Alex gets a call from Kara. She pressed a kiss to her daughter’s forehead before walking out of her room and meeting Kelly’s eyes in the living room. She also had the audacity to put the phone on speaker.

“Alex Danvers, as much as I’m so mad at you for going behind my back to speak to Lena, I can’t be thankful enough and have to thank you for pushing her to me. I love her, she loves me. We’re going to try and be together. And I also love you, even though you are the most annoying sister sometimes, thank you so much.”
