A Day In Freen's Life
Freen's POV
I arrived at the hospital and immediately went to change to my scrubs.
I have only been an intern for few months now but so far, I am enjoying it. Being around these kids makes me happy. It gives me some purpose. Something I thought I lost as well on the day that I lost everything.
"Freen, good thing that you're back already. You're needed at the emergency room. There's been an accident and we need additional staff to check on each victims." P'mind said when she saw me.
I nodded as I closed the door of the hospital locker room.
The Emergency Room was chaos. A lot of kids are crying, some are unconscious. The nurses and doctors are all doing their best to attend to each kid. My heart sank upon seeing this.
"Freen!" Dr. Heng called upon seeing me. "Don't just stand there! Go and help the others."
I immediately went to the patient that just come in. It was a young boy, about six years of age. The medics transferred him to an empty bed. He has bruises and cuts all over him. He's in pain yet I couldn't say anything to comfort him.
Dr. Heng came to check him. "It's okay. You're going to be okay." He said to the young boy. He noticed the wound on the boy's head. "Freen, go and tell them to ready the CT scan." He ordered.
I then went to the Radiology department to inform them of Dr. Heng's instructions.
"Dr. Heng wants you to ready the CT scan for a patient from the accident site." I typed in on my phone. The app then read it aloud to the staff at the Radiology department.
It has always been like this. Since I couldn't communicate verbally, and very few staff of the hospital knew sign language so I have to rely on communicating with them through my phone.
"I still wonder why Dr. Heng accepted her here." One of the nurses said, thinking that I wouldn't be able to hear what she said. I ignored that and instead went back to the ER to inform him that the CT Scan was ready.
When I went back, P'mind was ready to take the patient to the Radiology department so I assisted her.
Since I arrived at the Children's Hospital I'm trying to make sure I learn a lot. Learning each patients medical history, each medical procedure that has to be done. "A doctor cannot afford to make mistakes. One mistake can cause a patient's life." Dr. Heng once said. It has stucked with me so I'm doing my best to learn.
Once the CT scan was done and Dr. Heng has examined it, he asked me to assist at the surgery. I'm surprised because they never asked me to assist before. "Why? You don't want to?" He asked as if he read my expression. I shook my head. "I'm just surprised." I signed. "Don't think too much. All of the other doctors are already busy with other patients." He said coldly. I nodded and followed him to the operating room.
I watched him as he skillfully operate on the young boy. "Scalpel." He said and I handed it to him. "Forceps." He said and I handed it to him. The operation took about three hours. "Tie. Cut." he said as I cut on the thread. We repeat this until the wound has been closed.
We then transferred him to the ICU. I went back to the doctor's office and sat on my chair. It's already 11:00 pm and the other doctors have went home already. Every day has been like this. Either I study on the medical books or I practice during my free time.
I picked up my sewing kit and the doll that I've been practicing on. I put my headphones on and I opened my Spotify to listen to some songs to lift my mood.
I picked up the needle and started practicing on my suturing. Then Becky's single came along. I stopped what I'm doing and just focused on her voice. I smiled as I remember our first meeting in a while.
"This kid has grown up." I thought as I closed my eyes.
