Freen
I slowly opened my eyes. Everything that I see is blurred so I blinked in hopes that my vision will clear. I could here the beating sound of the machine beside me. It's when I noticed that there are several tubes attached to me. I looked around and noticed the white walls and the number of apparatus beside my bed.
"Where am I?" I thought. I start to panic. Then there are people rushing to my bed. "You're awake." A girl wearing a nurse's uniform told me. She looked at the machine beside me and then she went outside.
"Wait!" I tried to stop her but no voice came out of my mouth. I touched my throat and noticed the bandage wrapped around my neck. "What happened to me?" still no sound came out. I'm starting to feel scared.
The doctor came together with the nurse earlier. "What's happening to me?" I tried asking them but nothing comes out. "Ms. Chankimha, please calm down." I heard the doctor said but how can I calm down when I can't even hear myself? I don't even know why I'm here.
As I panic, I feel like everything is fading away. I tried to fight it but I'm feeling sleepy. And then everything went black.
----
I don't know how long I have been asleep but when I woke up, it looks like I have been transferred to a different room. I looked around and saw my grandmother entered the room.
"Freen, you're finally awake." she said as she walked towards me. I want to ask her so many questions but I remembered that I can't talk. My grandmother notices this and hands a notebook and a pen to me.
"I know you have questions." She said. "You can ask me anything."
"Why am I here? What happened to me?" I wrote down and handed it over to her.
"You don't remember anything?" she asked me and I shook my head. I saw her expression changed. It seems like she's worried about what she will say to me. She reached out and held both of my hands tightly.
"You've been in an accident, Freen." She said. Hearing those words surprised me and made me even more confused. My grandmother must have read through my facial expression, she continued: "Remember the competition that you are supposed to join?" I nodded. I finally remember now about the competition. My dad came home just to drive me and my mom to the venue. He was so excited to watch me sing as he has never got the time to be there because of his work.
I removed my hand from my grandmother's and picked up the pen and started writing down. "Where's mom and dad?"
The tears started to fall from grandmother's eyes as I hand her the notebook. "They're gone."
My whole world came crashing down as I hear those words. "Your dad died on the spot because of the impact. Your mother tried holding on for few days before she too passed away. You were in coma for three months, I thought I am going to lose you too." My grandmother explained.
The tears start to fall from my eyes and started crying. I can't believe that one day I will wake up to the news that both of my parents are gone. I felt my grandmother hugged me and I cried my heart out. I never even got the chance to see them one last time.
We stayed like that for a long time until I finally calmed down. My grandmother wiped my tears. Then I remembered something and I pointed to my throat. She understood what I meant. "You were severely injured and you damaged your vocal chord in the accident." She said.
So that's why. Whatever I do. No matter how I tried to speak, nothing comes out. I lost my voice together with my parents. And that means I can no longer sing again.
