Engagement

Wednesday had no idea which primordial being she might have offended for her day to have turned out like it did. To start it off she’d somehow managed to sleep through her alarm, which meant she’d had to run out the door without getting breakfast in order to get to practice on time. Because while exerting herself on an empty stomach was uncomfortable. It was nothing compared to having Weems run you till you dropped for being late for practice. A mistake most people in the club only made once.

Of course Bianca was still being Bianca when Wednesday had hurried in the door half an hour later. The other girl’s sarcasm and frequent snide remarks never had much of an effect on Wednesday. But the offhand comment about Tyler that was thrown her way as she made her way past still somehow managed to sneak it’s way under Wednesday’s armor. A fact that Wednesday responded to by closing herself off even more. Pulling her shell even closer around herself as she got undressed as fast as she could.

All in all the reporter that suddenly barged into the changing room less than a minute later never stood a chance. Or at least she shouldn’t have. But for some strange reason Wednesday felt… less murderous than she normally did when some second rate paparazzo tried worming their way into an interview. Not enough for Wednesday to actually treat the other girl cordially. But at the very least enough for her to extend the same offer to the girl as she did to every other idiot who wormed their way into their practice sessions. At least then the girl, who’d introduced herself as Enid, would be out of her hair. And Wednesday would be able to tell both her mother and Weems that she’d given the reporter the time of day, and that she couldn’t be held responsible for the actions of others.

What Wednesday had however not expected was the fact that Enid didn’t run off like the rest of the reporters. Instead Enid had patiently waited for the entirety the four-hour practice session, approaching Wednesday once again on her way to the showers. Which Wednesday took to mean that this girl was either ridiculously stubborn, or so oblivious that she didn’t know a poorly concealed rejection when it was thrown in her face.

Wednesday had a suspicion that it might be the latter

Although what had been most surprising was the fact that the interview hadn’t been altogether unpleasant. Wednesday had even almost enjoyed herself at some points. Sure Enid really hadn’t been lying about her lack of technical knowledge about fencing. Which had been obvious throughout the interview. But the questions had still been interesting. And it had been clear that Enid had taken what Wednesday said to heart. Avoiding questions that focused too much on how impressive Wednesday’s achievements were in relation to her age But rather focusing on her feelings towards the sport and bee expectations of the future.

All in all it had left Wednesday feeling conflicted with herself as she drove towards her apartment after her and Enid had parted ways. The other girl had thrown Wednesday off kilter. Somehow managed to subvert her expectations enough that Wednesday had acted besides herself. Even going as far as to skipping showering after practice in an effort to not make Enid wait. A decision she was already starting to regret as her skin still felt icky and made it seem like her otherwise fresh clothes were sticking to her skin

Not long after Wednesday threw the door to her apartment open with the sole thought of getting herself into the shower as fast as possible. Even going as far as to pull her shirt over her head once she’d shut the door behind her. Leaving it lying on the floor of the hallway as she delved deeper into her home

Wednesday’s plans were however interrupted by the sudden shrill ringing of her phone. The disturbance forcing her to cut through the living room where she quickly walked over to the infernal device. Only having to briefly glance at the number displayed before picking up the handset and bringin it to her ear

“mother” Wednesday spoke before letting the person on the other end introduce themselves. Having already recognized their house number and knowing there was little chance her father would be home at this time of day. And Pugsley would have just called her from his cell

“Wednesday ma cherie” her mother’s voice poured from the speaker. Her voice carrying the same airy smoothness that Wednesday was fairly certain she’d never be able to replicate. Not that she cared to. “how are you?”

“I’ve just returned home from practice “ Wednesday replied curtly. Wanting for the conversation go end quickly so she could get the rest of clingy clothes removed from her body “your timing is impeccable actually, as I was held up longer than usual”

“exceptional intuition” I suppose her mother joked. Her tone changing just enough to let Wednesday know she was gearing up to approach a subject she knew Wednesday would disapprove of

“I’ve actually just finished talking with Larissa” her mother segued. Doing an impressive job of making it seem casual but not quite well enough to hide the tenseness from someone who’d grown up around her various tones and tells “who mentioned that you were trying to avoid yet another reporter who wanted to talk with you?”

“did she now?” Wednesday deadpanned. Truly hating how it seemed like anything that happened in the presence of coach Weems seemed to make its way to her mother nigh instantly. Every event and happening being reported back and brought up whenever her mother had the chance to confront Wednesday about it. Deep down Wednesday knew she couldn’t fault the two of them for being friends. She just damn well wished they’d find something to gossip about other than her

“I know you don’t much care for them mon ange noir” Morticia carried on. Decidedly not acknowledging the comment about her and Weems’s gossip racket “but public relations are important. Especially when one aims as high as you do”

“I’m fairly certain Olympic athletes aren’t chosen for their ability to sweettalk the press mother” Wednesday shot back. Wednesday’s aspirations to compete in the Olympics being one of the few things her and her mother had always been able to find common ground in. Which was partly because her mother had had a likewise impressive, if somewhat shortlived, athletic career herself. She understood Wednesday’s enjoyment of the sport. Understood that she liked being good at it. Relished in the achievement. Which had always made the olympics seem like a natural goal

“No but being a known name is not going to harm your chances. There are many talented competitors dear. And you want to be the one they choose”

“well then I’m sure it’ll please you and coach Weems that I did in fact not avoid said reporter “ Wednesday said feeling more than a bit content at seemingly winning their verbal spar due to Weems relaying the events of today incorrectly “I did the interview”

“You did?” her mother asked sounding just as surprised as Wednesday had been at finding herself allowing Enid to question her “how wonderful Cherie “

“Anything to silence your infernal naggering” Wednesday sighed

“well you can expect some reprieve. As long as this isn’t going be a one time occurrence”

“If you could find more reporters like this one I’m sure there wouldn’t be an issue at all”

“Is that so?” her mother’s tone dipped into something unrecognizable as she spoke. Clearly hiding some thought that she’d chosen to keep to herself. And while Wednesday’s natural curiosity would often have urged her to dig deeper. Today it was buried deeply beneath her desire to clean herself and relax her sore muscles

“Indeed. Now I’m afraid you caught me in the middle of something mother and I’ll have to get back to it”

“but of course Cherie” Morticia exclaimed nauseatingly sweet. Obviously more than willing to let Wednesday have her way now that she’d gotten what she’d been after for so long. Probably in ab attempt to bribe Wednesday to continue this pattern of behavior “we’ll still see you Saturday right?”

“Of course mother. I have no intention of missing family dinner”

“perfect. And do take care dearest “

“Likewise mother” Wednesday said before putting the phone down and continuing her journey to the bathroom. Her skin starting to feel positively itchy at this point

Not long after Wednesday walked into her bedroom. Now much cleaner and content. And made her way to her closet. Pulling one of her shirts from within and putting it on to protect her still damp skin from the chill

Pushing her head through Wednesday glanced down on the floor where some article of clothing was laying by her foot. Probably having been pulled out of the closet along with her shirt

She didn’t recognize the piece as anything she owned. Her brow scrunched up in confusion as she picked the fabric from the floor and held it out in front of herself to get a better look ah it

Her look of confusion quickly turned into a grimace once she recognized the shirt in her hands and Wednesday quickly scrunched it up before sliding the other closet door open, and depositing the shirt in a cardboard box she’d placed at the back. Detirmed not to let this ruin her plans to relax for today in order to rest her legs that were more than a bit sore from the hours of position exercises and training matches.

A plan that she was determined to get started on as she hurled back out of the bedroom. Only slamming the closet door slightly harder than she had reason to in the process.

Thursday rolled around much too fast for Enid’s liking. Her week having been spent with researching more fencing stats than she’d ever want to look at again. But in the end she’d managed to throw something together that at least vaguely resembled a proper article. Just in time for her to creep in on Wednesday’s next practice session so Enid could let the other girl read through the article before it got sent to her editor.

Which was why Enid had made her way back to the rec center. Although she’d gotten there a bit later today. Not particularly wanting to sit through an entire session again. Because even though she’d gained some interest for the sport. Watching twenty women do jumping jacks for three hours wasn’t exactly entertaining.

And as far as Enid could tell, as she made her way into the gym proper, she’d timed her arrival pretty well. This time around everyone in the gym seemed to have paired up in pairs and were all engaged in individual fencing matches with Weems walking around between them correcting them as she went. It didn’t seem like fully engaged matches both because most of them seemed to be repeating the same steps, and also because Enid now knew enough to know they couldn’t all use the electronic sensor system at once. Making judging nigh impossible as Weems couldn’t keep an eye on them all.

After quickly assuring that Wednesday was actually present. And spotting her halfway across the gym, practicing with some girl Enid couldn’t recognize due to their mask. Enid made her way to the bleachers and sat down to wait out however much was left of today’s session

Luckily Enid didn’t have to wait long as Weems called the girls together about ten minutes after Enid had entered. Giving all of them a few messages before dismissing for the day. Causing a tsunami of white suits moving towards the locker rooms. Which Enid had to half run to catch up to. Aiming for the one spot of black amongst them

“Wednesday!” Enid exclaimed, waving her hand to get the other girl’s attention. Which obviously worked as Wednesday turned towards her and started weaving her way through the small sea of people with almost impossible ease. Standing in front of Enid half a breath later

“Enid” Wednesday inclined her head her eyebrows raising ever so slightly in the process “what are you doing here?”

The question caused Enid to pause for a second. Mostly because it caught her off guard with how…well partly rude it was. But she was already learning that Wednesday was rarely actually rude, despite her ice queen reputation. She was just painfully blunt to a point where people seemed to take offense. Although Enid had a sneaking suspicion Wednesday was well aware of that and simply didn’t care.

“I finished the article” Enid smiled pulling her USB stick from her pocket and holding it up “I wanted to give you a chance to read it through before it got published. Just in case there’s something you want changed”

“ah, yes” Wednesday quickly turning her head to glance at the device. Her braids swaying ever so slightly with the motion which Enid found strangely endearing

“it’s not due until Monday so you have plenty of time” Enid shrugged “and my work mail is there as well so you can always mail me your notes rather than having to track me down first”

“I see. Your effort is much appreciated” Wednesday continued, her voice still unreadable as always “although if it’s alright with you I would like to finish changing first”

“oh you can just take thi-“ Enid tried, but the shorter girl was already gone before she’d had a chance to finish. Either not hearing her, or willfully ignoring her. Either way Enid was left standing alone still waving the USB stick in the air. After a few seconds she just shrugged and leaned herself against the wall in approximately the same spot she’d done so earlier the same week. After all she couldn’t exactly fault Wednesday for wanting to clean herself up after Enid had barged in on her during practice. Even if her exit had been somewhat abrupt

Luckily Enid didn’t have to wait long before Wednesday reappeared from the locker rooms. Her hair now done up in a loose ponytail, and her fencing uniform having been replaced with an oversized hoodie, a band tee and a pair of shoes so large they actually frightened Enid a little bit

“we can leave now if you want” Wednesday said as she walked up to Enid

“uh…leave?” Enid asked, having somehow managed to loose track of the conversation after it had been going on for less than five seconds

“you wanted to go over the article did you not?” Wednesday tilted her head to the side. A quirk Enid had noticed early on but somehow found to be missing something when Wednesday’s braid weren’t there to bop along as she did it

“yeah but I was just gonna drop it off?” Enid tried “I mean you haven’t even read it yet”

“then you can walk me through it” Wednesday started making her way towards a set of doors that Enid had yet to use. Seemingly thinking that they had already reached a consensus “I believe I mentioned there was a decent coffee shop nearby?” she said over her shoulder

Enid was stuck in place for a few seconds. Trying her best to figure out what in the world had just happened. Then realizing that Wednesday clearly didn’t intend on waiting for her, Enid started running after the other girl. A small, deep buried part of her preening at the fact that Wednesday had just asked her out for coffee. And if Enid noticed it at all she pushed said part down even further. Refusing to let Yoko’s stupid accusations see even a shred of credibility

“sure that sounds nice” Enid breathed out as she caught up with the other girl. Her having the clear advantage of longer legs. Even if it seemed like Wednesday’s default speed was vicious power walking

“We’ll just have to stop by my car” Wednesday shook her fairly heavy looking gym back to as she said it. Making it fairly obvious she wanted to drop it off rather than lugging it around town. Enid merely followed along. Nodding towards Wednesday when she held the door open for her.

“wait this is your car?” Enid exclaimed after they’d made their way to the parking lot. Wednesday casually walking towards a vehicle at the back of the lot

“yes?” Wednesday raised an inquisitive eyebrow towards Enid. Clearly not understanding what the problem was as she opened the trunk and placed her bag inside

“this might be one of the nicest cars I’ve ever seen” Enid half whispered fixated on the machine

The car in question was a pitch-black Lexus. Enid wasn’t going to pretend to know enough about cars to name the model. But even she could see that the car in question certainly wasn’t cheap. The lines of the car screamed designer and Enid could see that the interior was all leather. There was definitely no doubt that it beat the old beat up lemons that she had been used to back home. Both the one her parents drove and the various used lot machines that her brothers had gotten hold of over the years

“my parents gave it to me for my 18th birthday” Wednesday explained still shooting Enid worried look as the blonde was staring at the vehicle “it’s good to know that someone appreciates their effort”

“oh come on you gotta appreciate that thing” Enid said gesturing frantically towards the car as they walked away

“it’s practical and not liable to break down” Wednesday shrugged “and much more sensible than the monstrosity my parents drive around in”

“pretty sure it also costs more than me and Yoko’s apartment” Enid grumbled. Sparing one last glance back towards the car before they rounded the corner and continued on their way

¬¬¬
The café that Wednesday had been leading them to turned out to be a rather small, quaint looking place. Even if the owners had done what they could to decorate the window and hanging a sign above the door that proudly displayed the name of the place

The buzz

Wednesday was the one who opened the door. Continuing her chivalrous streak by holding the door for Enid as a little bell rang out above them. The place was relatively busy with over half the seats taken and a line for the register.

Nonetheless Wednesday had barely entered before a head shot up from beneath the counter

“Wednesday!” the boy exclaimed. His smile teethy and kind as she waved hello to the gloomy girl “just gotta serve these people and I’ll be right with you”

“I’m familiar with how queuing works” Wednesday grumbled in response as she walked up behind the small line. Enid walking up next to her reading through menu that was posted on the wall behind the counter

All in all the place offered many of the same drinks Enid was used to from independent coffee shops. The main thing that made this place stand out was however their selection of specials that all seemed to include honey in one form or another. Something that Enid should have probably guessed with how much of the decor that was bee themed, along with the matching black and white color scheme.

Luckily the line moved fast and before long the two girls were standing in front of the register. The boy turning around from preparing something to greet them with yet another kind smile

“hey Wednesday”

“Eugene” Wednesday replied along with a curt nod “This is Enid. Enid Eugene”

“really nice to meet you” Enid smiled towards Eugene who was still beaming back at both of them

“likewise. Now let me get you something to drink. Your usual Wednesday?” Which Wednesday nodded ever so slightly at “and what about you?”

Enid suddenly realized that despite reading the menu several times she’d not actually gotten around to deciding what she wanted. Being way too invested in how quirky and nice the place looked to focus long enough to do so

“I… uhm… an Ottinger special please?” she managed to get out. Vaguely remembering it being some sort of latte with honey added.

“my moms’ favorite” Eugene smiled “that’ll be ready in a few”

“wait don’t we pay?” Enid asked perplexed as Eugene merely turned around to start preparing their drinks. And Wednesday moved towards the pick up area

“I have a tab” Wednesday deadpanned as she walked past Enid. Not caring to explain how someone had a tab at a freaking coffee shop

The two of them stood by the counter together waiting for their drinks. Wednesday making idle conversation with Eugene as he worked. Enid was only really listening with one ear, the majority of her focus still dedicated to the interior of the shop, but from what she did hear it sounded like Wednesday was asking how Eugene’s bees were. Which Enid supposed would explain the theme of the shop. Even if she was wondering where in the world he was keeping bees in the city

Not long after two mugs were placed on the counter for them. Enid’s looking more or less how she expected, bar the adorable latte art featuring a bear. Wednesday’s seemed to be a standard cup of black coffee, which was promptly picked up by the girl before she gestured for Enid to come follow her to a nearby table

Enid hurried and grabbed her own cup before joining Wednesday at their small table. Gently placing her drink there before falling into the chair across from Wednesday

“This place is nice “ Enid glanced around once more. Enjoying the atmosphere of the place. And the permeating smell of fresh coffee and sweet honey

“I agree” Wednesday said slowly stirring her coffee despite not having added anything to it “Eugene and his mother’s serve excellent coffee. Even if I don’t partake in their more bold creations”

“To be honest I’m not entirely sure what I’m drinking” Enid laughed “I sort of panicked and ordered the first thing that came to mind”

“Hazelnut latte with honey infused milk” Wednesday said looking down at Enid’s cup “an ottinger special right?”

“oh… yeah “ Enid lifted the cup closer to her nose and gave it a careful sniff. Pleasantly surprised that it did in fact smell like hazelnuts and honey. Which honestly wasn’t a combination Enid had tried in coffee before

“Eugene says it sells well” Wednesday continued lifting her own cup to her lips and taking a gentle sip

“you guys seem to be pretty good friends”

“I come here often after practice” Wednesday hesitated for a few moments “but yes I suppose he and I do qualify as friends”

“I don’t exactly know a lot of cafes that’ll let you open up a tab unless you’re at least on friendly terms with the barista” Enid scrounged up nose “Yoko won’t even let me open one at the bar where she works”

“I imagine that might have more to do with your likelihood of paying said tab” Wednesday deadpanned “For instance I have never been late in paying off mine here”

“Hey I pay” Enid protested before remembering the myriad of free drinks that she’d gotten on nights out “most of the time”

“As I said”

“meanie” Enid took a gentle sip of her own drink. Delighted that it had cooled down enough. Especially as the taste filled her mouth and Enid realized she’d probably never be able to get coffee from anywhere else again. This drink was heavenly

“I see Eugene’s recommendations are sound as always “ Wednesday mused. Reacting to the look of delight that had taken over Enid’s face

“this thing is stupidly good” Enid nodded before taking another careful sip. Not wanting to ruin her drink by scorching her tongue “like really out of this world good. How you can get filter coffee here is beyond me”

“this isn’t filter” Wednesday sounded almost insulted as she took another sip “its an octuple espresso. This is the only place where they’ll make it without questioning my order”

Enid’s eyes widened as Wednesday tool another sip of her abomination of a drink. A smile twitch of her lips being the only sign that she took pleasure in Enid’s reaction.

“Rip your sleep” Enid mumbled genuinely concerned about the amount of caffeine in Wednesday cup

Wednesday in her own right just shrugged and continued drinking

“Okay but to get back on track” Enid said after a few seconds of silence. Pulling her USB stick out of her pocket and placing it on the table

“The article. Like I said it’s not due till Monday so if you could just get back to me before Sunday noon ish then I can make any edits you’d like”

Wedndsday, rather than answering Enid, just looked down at the USB stick. Her face contorted in a way that Enid wasn’t sure whether was a frown or just how Wednesday looked normally. Resting death glare apparently being a thing

“is something wrong?” Enid tried after a few more seconds of awkward silence

“In a way” Wednesday still hadn’t taken her eyes off the thumb drive “I do not own a computer “

“oh shoot” Enid had of course assumed that putting the article on a drive would make the entire process easier for Wednesday. Not once considering that the other girl wouldn’t own something that Enid was fairly certain she herself couldn’t live without “I’m so sorry. I can get it printed at the office and bring it for you tomorrow? You’ll have less time to read it but of course you’ll actually be able to re-“

“Enid it’s fine” Wednesday cut in. Reaching out and picking up the thumb drive before Enid had had a chance to collect it “I can just use one at the library”

“Or” Wednesday continued after a small pause “I’m certain I’ll be able to threaten my brother into letting me borrow his”

“You have a brother?” Enid asked before being able to stop herself. She hadn’t considered the possibility of Wednesday having siblings. Mostly having been focused on decoding the various different glares Wednesday was able to send her way. But now that she knew Enid could totally see Wednesday as a sister. An older sister if Enid had to guess

“Yes. Puglsey” Wednesday didn’t seem offended by Enid’s outburst. Which was always something “an eternal Thorn in my side “

“mood” Enid giggled. Only for it to turn into a full on laugh when it became clear that Wednesday had no clue what that meant

After that it was almost impossible for them not to start talking about their respective siblings. Enid talking about what it had been like to grow up with a literal pack of older brothers. While Wednesday in return shared tidbits of her own experiences with Pugsley. Enid doing a mental fistpump when she knew she’d guessed right about Wednesday being an older sister

Enid found it surprisingly easy to talk with Wednesday about her brothers. Not that she didn’t have literally thousands of stories about all the dumb stuff they’d pulled. But usually talking about them always came with a sad undertone. One that was somehow completely missing from this conversation

Enid rationalized that it was because Wednesday didn’t know everything the same way Yoko did. Meaning that the pity filled eyes that were always on her when Enid spoke to her best friend about these things were completely absent here. Wednesday instead merely supplying each story with one of her own. Seemingly almost smiling a lot. Which only made Enid want to keep the conversation going for longer. Wistfully waiting for the chance of actually seeing the girl in front of her smile

They ended up talking long after they’d both finished their drinks. Wednesday seemingly unaffected by the huge amounts of caffeine she’d consumed. Which only made Enid worry more for her wellbeing. Considering she’d be vibrating up the walls from a single sip of that abomination

“and then Pugsley tried to blame the entire thing on the cat” Wednesday rolled her eyes “as if anyone with half a brain would ever believe that”

Enid felt another giggle rise in her throat as Wednesday finished her story. Only for her smile to droop as Wednesday glanced towards the clock on the wall, which was somehow also bee themed, and pull a face

“it’s getting pretty late isn’t it?” Enid asked. Deciding to just bite the bullet rather than try and avoid the inevitable

“yes and as much as I enjoy insulting my brother I do have other plans for the day” Wednesday mused. Her tone sounding almost annoyed. Although Enid was starting to learn that she generally just sounded that way

“I really didn’t mean to get in the way of your schedule “ Enid started to apologize only to be silenced by a look from Wednesday

“it was my suggestion that we go for coffee” Wednesday said “and besides im fully capable of managing my time. And I wouldn’t have endured socializing for so long if I didn’t enjoy it”

“oh… yeah “ Enid flashed a nervous smile which seemed to satisfy Wednesday’s … whatever the candidness was

“I’ll go say my farewells to Eugene and then we can leave. Deal?”

“Oh yeah of course” Enid nodded. Maybe a few times to many. Watching as Wednesday got up and approaches the counter once more. Enid only being able to hear snippets of her conversation with the barista over the noise in the café. She definitely heard Eugene says something about bees which Wednesday responded by nodding and saying something that Enid couldn’t make out.

Once their conversation seemed to be over Wednesday turned towards Enid. Who tried and failed to pretend she hadn’t been staring. And inclined her head towards the exit. An offer Enid graciously took as she hurried from her seat and out the door. Wednesday hot on her heels

“Eugene was inviting me to come see the bees” Wednesday said after they’d walked for a little while. Her tone painfully smug after she’d caught Enid eavesdropping “they have a number of hives they use to produce their honey”

“Sounds interesting” Enid said making damn sure she was staring straight ahead and not looking at the girl beside her. Considering she’d probably blush if she did

“beekeeping is a very noble art” Wednesday agreed “and Eugene has a unique knack for it. He’s won several awards for his honey”

“It was really good honey “ Enid licked her lips already wanting to try almost every remaining thing that had been on the menu back at the café

Wednesday just hummed in response. And Enid got the distinct feeling that she was taking some sick pleasure in Enid’s suffering. Which did actually seem pretty on point with the goth vibe that Wednesday had going on

“Here we are” Wednesday said as they turned back into the parking lot. Both of them heading towards Wednesday’s stupidly nice car. Which looked just as sleek as before

“I had a really good time” Enid said a bit hurried. Afraid that Wednesday was about to pull another one of her impromptu exits before Enid had a chance of thanking her for the coffee “oh and thank you for paying for my drink” she added

“it was nothing” Wednesday deadpanned “and I agree that it wasn’t altogether horrible” which Enid was pretty sure was the closest she was going to get to Wednesday admitting she liked spending time with her.

“and now I have a new place to waste all my money” Enid smiled. Not entirely sure it was actually a joke. Since she’d probably be back to the buzz within a week

“Eugene’s ego will hardly be able to handle it” Wednesday glanced towards her car as she said it. Making her thoughts pretty obvious

“you have to go” Enid said for her

“I do” Wednesday nodded “I’ll get back to you regarding the article before Sunday”

“Sweet. And like I said my email and phone number are both in the document so you can just hit me up however”

“it would seem appropriate for you to also have my number in case you have any follow up questions” Wednesday said surprising Enid

“Only if you want to”

“It seems the most practical solution” Wednesday continued her voice betraying nothing as always “do you have something to write it down with?”

“oh I’ll just put it in straight away” Enid pulled her phone from her pocket and quickly typing in the number that Wednesday recited for her

“I guess I’ll hear from you then “ Enid smiled

“You will” Wednesday nodded towards her briefly before starting to turn towards her car. Exits clearly not being her strong suit “farewell Enid “

“goodbye Wednesday “ Enid shook her head as she watched Wednesday climb into the car. Taking a few steps back to make room as Wednesday revved the engine and swung out of the parking lot with the same practiced eased she seemed to move around people with

Enid just shook her head some more. Before turning and making her way towards the bus stop. That girl really was something

“jesus there you are!” Enid was greeted as she closed the apartment door behind her. Making sure to clasp the bolt shut behind her

“I thought you were just dropping off your thumb drive?” Yoko continued from deeper within the apartment while Enid removed her shoes

“I was but we ended up going for coffee to go through the article together” Enid said as she walked into their kitchen slash living room. Not planning on mentioning the fact they had in fact not gotten around to doing so. Since Yoko was already gonna pounce on them getting coffee like a starved dog

“You two got coffee?” and there it was “like a coffee date?”

“Like a reporter discussing their article with the main focus of said article” Enid rolled her eyes “which was exactly what we did”

Yoko narrowed her eyes at Enid. Something that would have been more scary if she wasn’t still wearing her pink and grey power puff sleepwear

“You guys didn’t exchange one word about the article did you” Yoko said after a few seconds. And honestly Enid’s jaw would jaw would have dropped if she didn’t have some self control

“Yeah we did” Enid said figuring she still wasn’t lying. They had actually exchanged words about her article. Like at least 10

“Uhuh” Yoko still looked unimpressed

“so what did she think of it?”

“she’ll get back to me on that before Sunday” Enid shrugged

“so you guys spend 3 hours discussing the article and she doesn’t have anything to say about it?”

“She’s… particular with sharing her thoughts “ Enid still hadn’t lied

“so what thoughts did little miss gloomy share them” Yoko raised an eyebrow. Clearly not buying a word of what Enid was saying

“Okay she’s not gloomy” Enid protested. Which had honestly been the first lie she’d told so far. A pretty obvious one by the look on Yoko’s face

“Okay she’s a little gloomy” Enid admitted “but that’s just her standard mood”

“oh yeah I remember you telling me all s out that in great detail” Yoko said. Her voice thick with implication “three times”

“I’m just excited about the article okay?” Enid lied for the second time. Because honestly she was more interested in Wednesday herself than the article Enid had written about her. Making new friends had been hard for her and her and Wednesday seemed to click. Somehow.

But if she admitted that to Yoko she’d never get to hear the end of her romantic theories and ideas. So holding on to going ho professionalism it was. Even if it was clear Yoko wasn’t buying it

“whatever you say Eens “ Yoko shrugged. Enid being more than a little suspicious at how fast she dropped the subject. Something had to be up

“I don’t suppose you and the goth musketeer got lunch?” Yoko continued. Still not revealing her nefarious plans

“No. Just coffee” Enid said carefully. The situation making her distrusting of even her favourite meal of the day

“wanna get some then? I’m starving”

“Sure” Enid nodded before glancing over towards Yoko “but you might wanna change first “

“The Powerpuff girls are a national treasure” Yoko argued even as she for up and moved towards her room

“always liked Dexter’s laboratory more”

“Heathen!” Yoko yelled from behind the now half closed door. Making Enid smile at how utterly stupid her friend was. And how lucky she was to have her
