Advance
Enid wasn’t disappointed. She really wasn’t. After all she’d been the one to insist that her and Wednesdays relationship was nothing more than professional.
And their professional relationship had actually been rather successful. Wednesday had gotten back to Enid before Sunday as she’d promised. Actually emailing Enid Saturday afternoon to say that she had no objections to the article in it’s current state.
Which had basically freed up Enid’s weekend which she’d enjoyed by catching up on some of favorite series and even going on a run. All in all a success as she sent the article to her editor Monday morning.
The problem had only really started when Enid decided that updating Wednesday on the article wouldn’t be breaking any boundaries in a strictly professional relationship.
Which she’d then done by sending a quick text to the other girl. Which had been answered by complete radio silence. Which Enid didn’t think too much about since she wasn’t entitled to an answer. And besides they’d already discussed that Wednesday was okay with the article. So what did she really have to say?
On Wednesday when Enid was informed that the article had been approved for print she used the same rationale to also update Wednesday on this. Before quickly shooting her message that she was hopeful about this month’s issue
By Friday it had spiraled a little out of control
“Is this meme funny?” Enid asked pressing send and waiting for Yoko to pick up her phone across the room with a sigh
“5 out of 10” the other girl shrugged looking at her screen with obvious disdain “maybe 4”
“darn” Enid resumed frantically scrolling through her Gallery
“Why are you even asking me to rate memes?” Yoko piped up after a few seconds “normally you just spam”
“I’m trying to find one to send to Wednesday “Enid sighed still scrolling. Only stopping shen Yoko suddenly sat upright. Looking at Enid in wonder
“Why are you sending gothgirl memes?” Yoko’s tone was unmistakably smug and Enid was starting to realize that she’d messed up by admitting what she was fling so easily
“You know calling someone gothgirl really is hypocritical coming from you” Enid shot back. Gesturing towards Yoko who was currently dressed in a black lace top with a leather harness. Combined with some illegally skinny black jeans
“and you’re avoiding the question” Yoko continued undeterred “I thought you guys were strictly professional?”
“Sending memes isn’t unprofessional” Enid scoffed “you and Tara send each other memes all the time”
“me and Tara has also made out on several occasions” Yoko smiled “so maybe not the comparison you wanna go with”
“your workplace is a mess” Enid said pulling a face
“no shit princess” Yoko jumped off the couch and walked over to Enid. Her approach almost predatory the way her eyes lit up “so, gothgirl, spill the beans “
“we’ve just been texting. You know updating her on the article and stuff”
“Mhmmmm” Yoko said clearly impatient “and what has she said?”
“oh Uhm” Enid scratched the back of her head already feeling her cheeks heat up “not a whole lot”
Which just earned her a raised eyebrow from Yoko
“as in nothing?”
“she’s been ghosting you?” Yoko’s voice had changed from smug to hard in an instant. Her protective instincts clearly winning out over any need to tease Enid
“I think ghosting kinda implies she ever texted anything to begin with?” Enid almost whispered which earned her a more than unimpressed look from Yoko
“I know I know, okay? but to be fair my first few texts were just updates that didn’t exactly she didn’t have to reply to. So I’m trying something new”
“by sending memes to her in a completely professional way?” Yoko deadpanned and even Enid could hear how thin her excuses sounded
“okay it might not completely professional” Enid admitted with a sigh. Yoko smirking the second the words had left her mouth “not like that shut up” Enid added
“when we got coffee the other day we just sort of… clicked”
“uhuh” Yoko’s voice unbearably thick with mirth
“I said it wasn’t like that” Enid repeated herself “you know I’ve had a hard time putting myself out there”
“major trust issues, sure”
“…thanks” Enid side eyed the other girl before continuing “but with Wednesday it just felt right I guess?”
And hanging out with Wednesday had actually felt right with Wednesday, or at least free from the usual anxiety that had tended to plague Enid for the past while. Sure the girl was rude, abrupt and clearly had little patience for other people. But she’d also shown herself to be understanding and borderline kind when she wanted to. Which had made their encounters strangely pleasant and much less anxiety inducing than Enid had feared. All in all it seemed like a waste to let the opportunity go to waste. Although the hardest part of the process was apparently convincing Yoko that she wasn’t in love with a girl she’d met all of two times
“and now you want her to be your friend?” Yoko asked eyeing Enid suspiciously
“just my friend yeah” Enid said for what already felt like the thousandth time. Yoko didn’t seem entirely convinced as she held up her stare for several seconds
“well let’s just hope you crappy memes don’t scare her off then” Yoko said with a sigh dropping the stare
“hey! You said five out of ten!”
“I was being generous” Yoko said as she pushed herself off of the couch
“You could at least help!” Enid yelled after the girl as she trot out of the room
“something with dogs!” Was all Yoko screamed back before Enid heard the door to the bathroom slam shut. Enid just sighed and went back to scrolling through her gallery
However, the radio silence continued even with Enid’s best attempts at reaching out without putting too much pressure on Wednesday to get back to her. Which was in this case a few more tentative updates on how her day was going. And an utter waterfall of memes. Enid was more than aware that it was probably starting to look more than a little desperate, or that she should just go down to the rec center and talk to Wednesday in person. Enid just wasn’t ready to give up quite yet, even if she was too anxious to face Wednesday without some sort of excuse to be there.
Truth be said it was starting to affect Enid’s mood more than a bit. Which was made clear both by Yoko’s running commentary that she was a moping mess. But also due to the fact that Enid was currently spending her Friday night slouched on the couch while Yoko was at work. It had almost two weeks since she’d heard a peep from Wednesday and Enid had almost abandoned the idea of texting the girl. Instead scrolling mindlessly on her phone. Checking out what was going on on her social media
Her scrolling through Instagram was interrupted by a snapchat notification from Kent, in response to one Enid had sent his way a couple of minutes ago. They’d exchanged their snaps back when Enid had first visited the rec center. And even though they hadn’t spoken much outside of some sporadic back and forth, Kent was actually turning out to be a pretty decent guy. Who had kept Enid entertained with a steady stream of pictures from crazy nights out. Most of them featuring Bianca somewhere in the background which Enid taken notice of when it first began
What’s got you down in the dumps girl? Was written across a blurry picture of some nightclub. Something vaguely person shaped visible in the chaos.
He was responding to a snap Enid had sent earlier. Framing her feet on the couch as she complained that she wasn’t in the mood for partying. Something Enid was already starting to regret, since there was essentially no way to explain her sour mood without outing her predicament with Wednesday
On the other hand, Enid had never been particularly good at lying and Kent might actually offer some insight into the matter. Considering he did actually know Wednesday at least somewhat better than Enid did.
After a few minutes of consideration Enid decided to bite the bullet
I need to talk to Wednesday about the article but she’s not answering my texts Enid typed across yet another image of herself on the couch. Deciding to bend the truth just a little in order to save at least some of her dignity
This time around Kent didn’t answer immediately. In fact Enid was just about to put her phone away in favor of channel surfing when his response buzzed in. Which Enid didn’t at all almost drop her phone in her rush to open
You’ve been texting Addams? Was set across yet another blurry photo followed by a series of varying laughing emojis
Enid was about to send a snap back asking what was so funny about her trying to contact Wednesday when she was interrupted by a message ticking in. This time in her and Kent’s actual DM’s
Girl was the first messaged that appeared on the screen. Still leaving Enid lacking for an explanation but she was yet again cut off before she had a chance to ask
Addams doesn’t own a cell
All she has is this old corded phone
As in doesn’t do texts
Enid sat and stared at the screen for several long seconds, the information barely registering as she read the three messages over and over again.
Wednesday didn’t own a cellphone
Wednesday hadn’t been getting her texts
Wednesday hadn’t been ignoring her
But probably most important. Wednesday hadn’t seen Enid make a fool of herself for the past week by constantly sending more messages to someone who clearly had no interest in them
Enid almost squealed as she hugged her phone to her chest, happiness pretty much exploding in her chest at the revelation that she might still have a chance at working things out with Wednesday
Happiness that was however quickly replaced by the realization that getting in contact with Wednesday meant making an honest to god phone call. Something that was definitely on Enid’s top five of most hated things. To the point where there was a string of local restaurants she couldn’t order from if Yoko wasn’t home, due to them not having an option to order online
Enid stared down at her phone with a mix of anxiety and happiness roaring in her chest. On one hand she hadn’t made a complete fool of herself in front of Wednesday. On the other it had been a little over six months since she’d actually made a phone call. And back then she’d needed forty minutes to psych herself up.
Enid came to a conclusion after a few seconds of less than careful consideration. Quickly pulling up Wednesday’s contact information and pressing the call button before bringing the phone up to her ear.
Adrenaline was gonna be her only way out.
The plan failed almost immediately as the phone rang for the first time. Enid realize she had no idea what to say to Wednesday when she picked up. Normally she’d had written a whole script before even considering calling someone.
Second ring. Enid’s heart was beating so hard she could feel it in her ears. She was genuinely considering throwing her phone across the room.
Third ring. Nope. Fuck it. This wasn’t happening. For crying out loud she didn’t even know what to say. Enid quickly brought the phone away from her ear, determined to disconnect the call and blame the whole thing on a buttdial if the matter was ever brought up
That was until the ring was suddenly cut off, Enid’s thumb still hovering over the button
“Addams. Speak” Wednesday’s voice flowed from the phone. Slightly garbled by both the distance and speaker quality. But nonetheless fully recognizable to Enid. No one else would sound that murderous answering their phone
“Hi Wednesday… hi it’s… it’s Enid hi” Enid managed to squeak out. Having to swallow several times before finishing the sentence
“Enid” Wednesday said. Too polite to comment on the disastrous way that Enid had introduced herself “I wasn’t expecting to hear from you. Is something the matter with the article?”
“oh no the article’s great” Enid reassured the other girl “My editor approved it and now it’s with our designer who’ll make a spread and whatnot so it’s ready for printing” Enid had actually gotten a small preview of the design the other day. It wasn’t exactly breathtaking. Most of the space naturally being taken up by the article itself. To which their designer had then added a visual of the current national rankings of fencers. Wednesday’s name in the top five. As well as a photo of Wednesday that took up most of the second page. It wasn’t a particularly recent shot of Wednesday considering she looked several years younger. Still sporting a slight babyface. She was however fully recognizable with her signature braids, and because she was glaring at the photographer with a death stare that sent chills down even Enid’s spine. Where their designer had found the image, and why she thought it was a good idea to use it in the magazine was really a mystery
“I’m glad to hear so. But then why have you called?” Wednesday asked with Enid clearly being able to picture the eyebrow the other girl would have raised in challenge if she had been there in person
“oh yeah… I’ve actually trying to get in touch with you” Enid laughed nervously “but no dice”
“ah. I haven’t been able to check my mail this week. Although I did ask Pugsley to keep an eye on it for me”
“oh no I’ve actually been… texting you” Enid admitted. Thinking to herself that there was no reason she’d have to elaborate on just how much she’d been texting Wednesday
“that would explain why you haven’t been successful” Wednesday said “Though I suppose that’s partly my fault for not explani-“
“do you want to hang out?” Enid blurted out having spent the majority of the conversation trying to come up with a way of bringing it up “sorry” she quickly added after realizing she’d interrupted Wednesday
“hang out?” Wednesday responded after a few seconds of tense silence. Her voice moving from her usual monotone towards something that Enid couldn’t tell whether was incredulousness or just intrigue
“yeah you know to celebrate that the article got approved” Enid quickly improvised. Quietly celebrating that she managed to come up with an actual excuse on the spot “I know it’s not huge but it’s like the second time they’ve let me write my own stuff. So it’s pretty big to me and I wanted to thank you”
“I… don’t do parties” Wednesday replied sounding more unsure of the offer than outright dissatisfied
“oh it wouldn’t be a party party” Enid was continuedly surprised by her sudden ability to improvise considering her heart was still going at roughly a thousand miles per hour “it would actually just you and me… and my friend. But she’s kind of a given”
“explain” Wednesday’s response came quicker this time. And Enid could see how what she’d said had probably been pretty cryptic
“my friend works at this really great bar we frequent” Enid explained “she’s working tonight so we can’t really avoid her. But other than that it would just be the two of us”
Enid’s explanation was met with silence from the other end of the phone. Silence that stretched on for so long that Enid was about to pull the phone from her ear to make sure the call hadn’t dropped. Or that Wednesday might have just hung up at the notion of spending more time with her
“what’s the address?” Wednesdays voice suddenly came out from the speaker before Enid had the chance to move it
“97 West Chaucer street” Enid said feeling the same rush of joy from earlier rise back up in her ches, filling it entirely as she almost had to stop herself from jumping around the room with how excited she was
“I could be there in about an hour” Wednesday responded “if that works for you”
“sounds perfect” Enid was pretty sure she was smiling so hard it was audible through the phone. But she couldn’t really bring herself to care. She was allowed to feel happy about making a new friend. And besides, she still had an entire hour to compose herself before actually meeting Wednesday. Plenty of time to stop smiling like an idiot. Probably
“I will see you then Enid”
“see you Wednesday” Enid replied hearing the phone click dead a few seconds later as that was apparently enough for Wednesday to end the phone call. Enid couldn’t really be bothered by the other girl’s general lack of manners right now though. Almost the second the call had ended Enid had promptly hugged the phone to her chest and was now actually jumping up and down in the living room.
Enid wasn’t exactly sure whether her sudden rush of excitement was solely due to Wednesday agreeing to hang or possibly influenced by her leftover nervous energy from having to make an honest to god phone call. But right now it didn’t really matter to her as she bounced around the room. Because Wednesday hadn’t been ignoring her. Wednesday had even agreed to hang out with her. And now they were gonna see each other in less than an hour. She was seeing Wednesday in less than an hour. She had to pick an outfit and make her way to the bar in less than an hour.
Oh crap
_____________________________________________________________________________________
“this is decidedly not a great bar Enid” Wednesday said with a small sigh as she looked up at the dingy sign that was plastered above the door
They’d met a few minutes earlier. Wednesday sneaking up on Enid as she was making her own way towards the bar. Wednesday had apparently parked her car a little ways away and had noticed Enid practically skipping down the street and hadn’t seen a reason to wait with meeting up with her. Even if she had done so by silently walking up behind Enid and tapping her on the shoulder. Wednesday had looked downright impressed at the volume of the resulting shriek
“okay I know it’s a bit of a dump” Enid admitted shifting nervously as she did “but like I said my roomie works here which means we get first class service. And the best employee discount”
“if you say so” Wednesday said although the look she was sending Enid’s way, in between worried glances towards the bar, made it pretty clear that she didn’t exactly trust the recommendation
“I do in fact say so” Enid beamed as she walked over and held the door open for Wednesday. Thinking that if nothing else her general positivity might do something to alleviate the other girl’s doubts. Because the interior of the bar certainly wasn’t going to
All it really earned her was a raised eyebrow from Wednesday as she walked past Enid and into the bar, Enid quickly following after.
They’d barely made it one step in before being assaulted by the smell of dust and stale beer. Along with the distinct aroma of someone smoking inside despite the law prohibiting it. Enid was more or less used to the smell by now, after several nights spent here. But she caught Wednesday pull a slight face as she breathed in. Which was honestly the most emoting she’d ever caught the other girl doing. Murderous glares notwithstanding
And in Wednesday’s defense the bar wasn’t exactly pretty to look at either. Most of the concrete walls were haphazardly covered in various decorations that had no distinct theme. Most of it being either nautical or nature themed, which was definitely pulling the decor in two very different directions. The bar itself was old and noticeably chipped. The mirror like varnish having long since been worn down and replaced by various stains and cracks. All in all the bar really did look like a dump. And that was without mentioning the dirty floor, the dim lighting or the fact that it seemed like not two chairs in the place matched.
But it was Enid’s dump. Showcased by her best friend standing behind the bar and shooting her a unimpressed look over her sunglasses as Enid waved cheerily at her. Who in their right mind would wear heavily tinted sunglasses in a place this dark Enid didn’t know. But she’d also learned not to questions Yoko’s fashion quirks a long time ago.
Enid indicated for Wednesday, who was staring out across the room with an unimpressed look, to follow her as she made her way towards her usual booth. Sliding in on one of the padded benches quickly followed by Wednesday who chose to sit across from Enid.
“your taste in bars continues to be extremely questionable” Wednesday said as she sat down casting a final glance out towards the rest of the place
“like I said you don’t come here for the décor. You come here for the service” Enid smiled just in time for her to gesture towards Yoko who was walking up to them as she spoke
“hello there” Yoko said as she stopped at the table. A dumb smirk plastered across her face
“hi” Enid smiled, Yoko frowning a bit as Enid didn’t finish their usual joke “Wednesday this is Yoko. Yoko, Wednesday” Enid continued ignoring Yoko’s displeasure
“Yo” Yoko raised her chin in Wednesday’s direction as a greeting, making Enid cringe internally
“hello” Wednesday said back returning Yoko’s nod “I’ve been lead to believe you’re the main reason this place is tolerable”
“oh yeah I’m definitely the main attraction” Yoko grinned as she suddenly pulled a small notepad and a pencil from her pocket. Enid having no clue where she even got them as this place definitely didn’t take orders “and in that regards what are you two having?”
Enid had to fight back a sigh at Yoko who was obviously doing her best, and enjoying being a nuisance. But all things considered she was behaving a lot better than Enid had feared since she’d essentially sent a series of panic texts half an hour ago saying that she’d be coming to the bar with Wednesday, but offering up no further explanation. So all in all Yoko could definitely be a lot more intolerable right now
“hmmm a Yoko special please” Enid mused, planning on taking full advantage of Yoko having a shift tonight
“shitty beer it is” Yoko said continuing her gag by writing something down on the notepad “and for the lady?” she said shifting her attention towards Wednesday
“… I can’t drink” Wednesday said flatly after a few seconds which certainly wasn’t what Yoko had expected to hear with the way her pencil drooped in her hand at the response
Enid also did a sudden double take at the sentence. Suddenly fearing that she’d missed something important about the other girl and taken her to a bar when she didn’t even drink. Though they hadn’t really discussed things like that and Enid could half remember Wednesday telling a story that involved a glass of wine.
“we have a tournament coming up” Wednesday elaborated spurred on by the two confused looks being sent her way “coach Weems has strict rules about drinking close to matches”
Okay that made a lot more sense. Even if Enid did wish Wednesday had said something when she’d invited her out to a literal bar
“in the non-alcoholic department the best I can do iiiiiis tap water with an old lemon in it?” Yoko tried. Pulling a face as she said it
“it’ll have to do” Wednesday nodded glumly to which Yoko just shrugged and started making her way back towards the bar
“hey wait” Enid said not feeling particularly happy about having Wednesday drinking sketchy tap water on their night out. Racking her brain for an alternative “do you still guys still have those fruit drink things?” she said suddenly remembering something Yoko had mentioned a few weeks earlier “the ones that your boss ordered after seeing them on his vacation”
“yeah we have a couple of cases out back” Yoko said nodding her head towards the bar “but I can’t really swing an employee discount on those Eens”
“it’s fine. I’ll pay for them” Enid said. Just happy to have found an actual alternative for Wednesday
“alright then” Yoko shrugged before turning back towards Wednesday “what flavor would you like?”
“surprise me” Wednesday replied flatly to which Yoko nodded and finally actually left the table
“I can pay for my own drinks” Wednesday remarked after Enid had sat down properly again. Having had to twist herself around to speak to Yoko
“oh yeah I know” Enid smiled sheepishly “but I invited you here and all. Plus I get all my drinks for free here”
“the Yoko special?” Wednesday asked a small smirk playing on her lips
“heh yeah. It mostly just means whatever cheap beer she can sneak without her manager noticing” Enid scratched the back of her head “but sometimes there’s a surplus of something nice and I get spoiled”
Wednesday seemed to consider something for a few moments before nodding solemnly
“fine then. But I will return the favor” she said with a warning finger “an Addams doesn’t have outstanding debts”
“is that like a family rule?” Enid teased
“either that or my father’s attempt at financial advice” Wednesday shrugged “the two tend to mix together more than expected”
“I mean it sounds like sound advice?” Enid smiled unable to stop herself from giggling a little as she said it
“Debatable. But so is most of my father’s advice”
“you haven’t talked a lot about them” Enid remarked trying to sound casual even if she was actually more than a bit curious about the kind of people who raised a kid like Wednesday. And her apparently incredibly accident-prone brother
“it hasn’t come up in conversation” Wednesday responded. Staring patiently at Enid afterwards clearly not going to let Enid of the hook without actually asking what she wanted to know
“soooo what do they do?” Enid relented after enduring the stare for a little longer. Did that girl just not blink?
“father runs an auction house for rare and exotic curiosities” Wednesday explained. In no way hiding her mirth at having won their little stare off “he’s fairly well known among those who have needs of his services”
“that sounds interesting” Enid remarked and really meant it. At the very least it sounded more interesting than being a construction side manager like her dad. Even though she didn’t think about that often
“these days he mostly sits in his office taking calls and handling paperwork. Although he’ll happily regale you with stories of driving across the country looking for hidden treasures” Enid could swear Wednesday almost smiled as she said it. Half lost in some sort of memory
“I mean still sounds pretty cool” Enid smiled earning her an eye roll from Wednesday “what about you mom?”
“mother is a semi-professional horticultor who has turned her own short experience with fencing into an obsession with micro-managing my career” Wednesday sighed and Enid definitely remembered something about Wednesday’s mother being involved in her career being mentioned the first time they met
“your mom was a fencer too?” Enid asked very much sidestepping the clearly touchy subject of her involvement in Wednesday’s career. Which seemed like something saved for a day where they’d both had a drink or two. If Enid’s experience with parental frustrations was anything to go by
“she competed in her youth. Even earning a national ranking at some point” Wednesday elaborated “but then she met father and she dropped out of the sport. Most likely influenced by my birth which happened some time after”
“your mom stopped fencing because she was pregnant with you?” Enid asked making sure she heard that correctly
“oh no I was born nearly two years after she stopped competing” Wednesday shook her head “but there was a clear connection insofar as her not wanting her athletic career getting in the way of starting a family”
“kind of makes sense doesn’t it?” Enid tilted her head from side to side “I mean you spend a ridiculous amount of time on fencing”
“three times a week” Wednesday nodded “plus extra sessions and tournaments”
“exactly” Enid continued nodding towards Wednesday “And I’m sure people can make that work. But that’s not exactly a lot of time to raise a child. And especially not two”
“I certainly don’t hold my mother’s decision against her” Wednesday said “besides she’s always maintained she lacked the skill to make it in the sport”
“unlike you right?” Enid teased
“I certainly don’t plan on quitting until I’ve achieved my goal”
“Olympics” Enid nodded thinking back to their interview where Wednesday had made it more than clear what she was aiming for
“nothing less” Wednesday returned Enid’s smirk at the shared memory
Enid was about to say something more when she was interrupted by someone stepping up to their table. Drawing both of their attentions towards them
“sorry to interrupt lovebirds” Yoko said earning her a glare from Enid and a raised eyebrow from Wednesday “we got one extremely bad beer for the snoring monster and one very exotic Canadian fruit punch for the lady” Oh Enid was so gonna get her back for this
Yoko just smirked in response to the glare Enid was throwing her way as she placed the drinks on the table before walking away throwing a small wave over her shoulder as she did so
“ignore her” Enid sighed before grabbing her beer and taking a sip and looking at the drink with raised eyebrows. Whatever Yoko had managed to sneak was better than usual. Actually nearly passable for proper beer
“Good?” Wednesday asked amused by Enid’s comical reaction to her drink and not trying to hide it
“Actually yeah” Enid grinned before nodding towards the bottle in front of Wednesday “yours?”
Wednesday picked up the bottle and took a sip. And Enid took it as a good sign that the other girl didn’t make a face as she swallowed
“passable” Wednesday said after half a moment. Making Enid roll her eyes before she took another sip from her glass. This evening was going to be interesting
“and then.. then Rob says” Enid struggled to get out. Both because the words seemed to get stuck on her tongue but also because she was constantly giggling whenever she thought about the punchline to her own joke “Rob says that there aren’t even any wolves there!” She finally managed to get out before dissolving in a fit of giggles across the table
“your brother sounds like quite the character” Wednesday said sounding amused as she did. Or at least Enid thought she sounded amused. She at least sounded different than Wednesday’s usual monotone
“oh yeah definitely” Enid nodded stopping when her held suddenly started to feel swimmy “horrible people really. Brothers” She continued “Pugsley sounds real nice though” she quickly added remembering that Wednesday actually had a brother and she shouldn’t let her problems with her own make her insult him
“oh no I agree with the sentiment” Wednesday mused “brothers are quite horrid little parasites”
“exactly!” Enid exclaimed jumping a little in her seat before relaxing again and supporting herself on the table “and they eat all your food even when you label it in the fridge”
“I find it helps if you poison it once or twice” Wednesday responded with that tone to her voice that Enid was fairly certain was still entertainment. Right? “teaches them not to trust things that are yours”
Enid narrowed her eyes at the other girl trying to figure out if she was serious or not. When she realized she couldn’t read Wednesday’s expression Enid instead started giggling instead and rested her head on the table as her body shook
“okay what can I get you two this ti-“ Yoko said as she walked up to the table stopping as she saw Enid laying across the table “okay definitely no more for this one”
“nono I’m good” Enid complained waving her hand in Yoko’s general direction
“okay damn we’re that far gone already?” Yoko asked before shooting Wednesday and apologetic look “sorry. She’s never been too great at handling her alcohol” Wednesday just shrugged in response. Not seemingly bothered by Enid being more than a little drunk
“hey Enid” Yoko said gently prodding Enid’s side “how’d you get here babe?”
“walked” Enid grumbled. Not particularly happy about getting jabbed in the ribs now that she’d just found a comfortable spot to lay down
“and that would be a twenty-five minute walk home in the dark” Yoko sighed looking down at Enid disapprovingly “and I don’t get off for another three hours dumbass”
“I could drive her to your apartment” Wednesday offered nonchalantly looking bemused at Enid who was certainly getting comfortable on the table “provided there’s parking since I’ll no doubt have to help her up?”
Yoko’s expression was more than enough to answer that question. Most of the parking spots on their street being taken up nigh permanently
“that complicates things” Wednesday sighed taking another sip of her fruit punch. The mandarin ones turning out to be by far her favorite
“yeah” Yoko said scratching her head “technically I could sit her at the bar with a glass of water and bring her home when we close” Yoko shrugged
“hardly optimal” Wednesday remarked which Yoko had to agree with. Even with supervision this didn’t seem like a place to leave a drunk girl if Yoko couldn’t be there to keep watch the entire time
“if it’s acceptable to you I do have a guest bed” Wednesday said after the two of them observing Enid giggling to herself for a few moments
“if it’s okay with me?” Yoko asked raising her eyebrows at the shorter girl
“Enid is hardly in a state to make the decision” Wednesday said glancing towards the girl “and since you’re her best friend I’d dare say it’s at least partially up to you whether she goes home with a stranger”
“dammit” Yoko grumbled looking down at Enid really regretting serving her the last few beers. Normally the girl could drink though.
“Enid is usually a good judge of character, but I want your address” Yoko said pointing at Wednesday “and phone number. And if I don’t hear from her in the morning I will hunt you down”
“all understandable” Wednesday nodded “although I should probably say that I don’t own a cellphone. Since that detail has apparently already caused problems for Enid”
“that explains so much” Yoko commented barely a whisper. But loud enough that Wednesday heard it and filed it away for later
“do you want me to write my information down?” Wednesday asked and was quickly handed Yoko’s small notebook where she scribbled down her information down next to the fake order note Yoko had made earlier
“do you need help getting her to your car?” Yoko asked after she quickly glanced down at the note being handed back to her. Pausing momentarily to admire Wednesday’s neat handwriting
“I think I’ll manage” Wednesday rose from her own seat and went over and gently shook Enid who grumbled something intelligible in response
“Enid time to get up” Wednesday said up. Her voice stern yet soft, and much to Yoko’s surprise Enid actually starting to push herself up from the table albeit it grumpily. Last time she’d been this drunk it had taken Yoko most of an hour to convince her to even try and move
Even more to Yoko’s surprise Wednesday managed to hoist Enid up from the seat once she was somewhat upright. Essentially supporting most of Enid’s weight as the height difference made Enid slump towards the other girl as she held on to her
“if you’d do me the favor of calling my number I’ll call you back once I’ve gotten her home” Wednesday said to Yoko. Waiting for the girl to nod before starting to cart Enid towards the door
“I got a little drunk” Enid giggled as Wednesday put her down in the car seat and started to fiddle with the seatbelt. The motion being unfamiliar when strapping someone else in
“more than a little I’d say” Wednesday responded still struggling to make the belt click in while also fitting over Enid properly
“I’m sorry”
“it’s fine Enid” Wednesday finally managed to click the seatbelt in and quickly got up and made her way towards her side of the car. Closing the door as she did so
“are you mad at me?” Enid asked as Wednesday got into the drivers seat. Having a much easier time at buckling her own seatbelt
“I believe I just said it was fine” Wednesday said as she turned the car on and started pulling out from her parking spot
“you seem mad” Enid continued. Her eyes doing their best to focus on Wednesday as she said it
“I’m merely focused on getting you home” Wednesday responded. And she did sound slightly less cold now “which is preferable to you being left in that sewage output of a bar. Or god forbid having to call your parents for help. I can only imagine the fuzz my mother would raise if she had to come collect me from such a place”
“oh yeah we definitely can’t do that with my parents” Enid laughed and Wednesday was slightly relieved that the other girl seemed to have abandoned the idea that her actions had earned her Wednesday’s ire
“no they don’t like me anymore” Enid continued still laughing albeit it slightly less. Wednesday definitely raised an eyebrow at the statement wondering what Enid meant.
On reflection the other girl hadn’t mentioned her own parents when they had been discussing Wednesday’s family earlier. Instead letting Wednesday do the talking until they’d ventured onto the topic of brothers which Enid had had a lot more to add to
And while Wednesday was certainly curious she also didn’t make it a habit to push drunk people for information they wouldn’t have shared with her otherwise. Wednesday liked her privacy and generally extended the same courtesy to others. Not prying where she wasn’t welcome. Unless there was a need for it.
But there wasn’t this time so instead Wednesday focused on driving and left Enid alone to giggle silently at every new joke she whispered to herself.
Enid was awoken by an incessant knocking sound which it took her a few moments to realize was someone banging on the door. Clearly wanting to get in touch with either her an Yoko with the way there were downright hammering the thing down.
She slowly swung her legs over the side of her bed and pushed herself up. Stopping for a second as the whole room started swaying at the sudden motion as well has her head starting to pound like someone was hammering an icepick into it.
Unfortunately the knocking still hadn’t stopped so Enid was forced to slowly make her way towards it. The trip to the door seeming a lot longer with how slowly she had to walk. As well as her stumbling over a few misplaced items on the way. Like a shoe rack filled with what looked like Yoko’s entire collection of goth leather boots. Which Enid could have sworn she usually kept in her room
When she finally reached the Enid blearily fumbled with the lock before managing to pull the damn thing open. Very much intending on giving the person on the other side of the door a piece of her mind for making so much noise so early
“Fuck Wens what took you so- oh” the woman on the other side of the door said. Her eyes widening as she saw Enid
“you’re not Wednesday” the woman said with a scowl on her face
Enid blinked a few times at the mention of Wednesday’s name. Memories of last night slowly making their way to the front of her mind. Her and Wednesday going out for drinks. Enid maybe having one too many of said drinks. Wednesday… taking Enid home in her car.
Enid suddenly realized why her apartment had seemed so strange. Because she wasn’t in her apartment. She was in Wednesday’s, and was standing in front of someone who had clearly been expecting Wednesday to open the door
“can’t say I expected to be replaced that fast” The woman said looking Enid up and down “but at least she has a type”
“huh?” was all Enid managed to get out before the woman pushed her way past her and started walking towards wherever it was Enid had just come from
“hey you can’t just barge in!” Enid said walking after her. Some of her faculties returning to her after being pushed around
“sweetie I’ve been here more than you have” the woman said turning around to look disapprovingly at Enid as they reached what looked like a living room “besides Wednesday has my stuff and said I should come and pick it up?”
“your… stuff?” Enid asked still trying to figure out what in the world as going on
“nothing you have to worry about. Just some clothes I left behind” The woman scoffed giving Enid another once over “even though I can see you’ve already taking to sharing”
Enid followed her gaze down herself surprised to see that she wasn’t in her own clothes. Rather she was wearing a black shirt with a logo on she definitely didn’t recognize. Not to mention that the shirt was too short on her. Almost being classified as a crop top with the wat it cut off slightly above Enid’s boyshorts
Enid was also slowly realizing that she wasn’t wearing pants
“what’s even going on he-“
“she’ll break your heart you know” the other woman cut in her mood seeming to steadily worsen based on her tone “whatever it is you two have going she’ll never be as invested in it as you thi-“
“AYA” Wednesday’s voice suddenly streamed in. Causing both Enid and the stranger to look over towards the staircase in the corner of the room. Where Wednesday was currently standing delivering a serious death glare
“there you are” the woman, Aya apparently said throwing her arms out “I was wondering where the fuck you were”
“we were sleeping” Wednesday explained her voice terse “I wasn’t aware you were coming by today”
“well maybe if you’d answer your damn phone you’d know” Aya said raising her voice as she did so. Clearly responding to the aggressive energy Wednesday was giving off. Something Wednesday definitely noticed as she seemed to pull it back somewhat before she continued
“I was out last night” Wednesday explained this time more neutrally “now if you’ll please wait I’ll get you your belongings”
“if I must” Aya said still glaring towards Wednesday. Even if here focus shifted every now and then and some of her ire was sent Enid’s way. Much to Enid’s confusion considering she’d just opened the door for her
“good” Wednesday nodded as she started making her way back up the stairs. Trailing her black nightrobe after her “and be nice to my guest if you can constrain yourself”
“constrain myself” Aya mumbled to herself before turning towards Enid “I’m just trying to warn you what kind of person she is. She’ll string you along and then drop you like it’s nothing”
“string me along?” Enid wondered out loud. Not entirely sure what the other woman was talking about. Still not having connected the dots as they slowly came into focus
“she could at least have waited until my freaking stuff was out of her apartment before replacing me with some blonde” Aya sneered. And somehow that was the comment that made the situation click for Enid. And made her understand why her opening the door half dressed in Wednesday’s clothes definitely hadn’t helped
“oh… oh no Wednesday and I aren’t you know” Enid quickly said holding her hands up. Although Aya clearly didn’t buy it with the way she was looking at Enid
“swear” Enid supplied “we were just celebrating an article I wrote and I got a bit too excited”
“an article?” Aya asked her eyebrows rising “about what? Wednesday? Please. You’re gonna have to come up with something better than Wens actually spending time with a reporter”
“but we’re really no-“
“I believe you’ve bothered my guest enough now Aya” Wednesday interrupted them yet again as she came down the stairs carrying a small carboard box that had Aya’s named written neatly in sharpie on the front
“oh that’s just sad” Aya said as Wednesday handed her the box
“I believe everything you left here is present. If it isn’t feel free to call and I’ll try and find it for you. But now I’d like you to leave” Wednesday punctuated the last part by gesturing towards the door further down the hall
“oh don’t worry I know that part” Aya sneered. Rooting through the box for a few seconds before doing as Wednesday had asked and let herself be escorted to the door where Wednesday wasted no time in leading back out of the apartment. Locking the door behind her
“that was… wow” Enid said as Wednesday reentered the room. Looking somewhere between angry and exhausted, Which Enid guessed was Wednesday’s version of embarrassed
“I apologize for that… performance” Wednesday said sounding truly and utterly done “If I knew she was coming I’d make sure not to involve you in it”
“oh no I believe that that was all her” Enid shook her head “she was a character”
Wednesday just nodded
“do I wanna ask what it was about?” Enid tried after a few seconds of terse silence “You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to. Just if you needed to talk about it”
“she’s just an… acquaintance” Wednesday brushed her off before sighing a moment later
“we had a… physical relationship” Wednesday elaborated hesitantly. Enid doing her best to be respectful and listen “at one point Aya wanted us to be more involved and didn’t take it well when I said I had no interest in that”
“oh” Enid let out before she could stop herself making Wednesday look up at her “that sounds unpleasant… for both parties” Enid quickly strung together not wanting to be insensitive
“it was… challenging. But luckily it’s over now” Wednesday sighed looking around the room as if she was considering something about it
“that’s always something” Enid nodded. Not really sure what to say in this situation since her own experience with romantic relationships was. Limited at best. And certainly not very applicable to this situation
“it’s a definite improvement” Wednesday said her eyes landing back on Enid. Whatever uncertainty that had plagued her before seemingly gone
“If you’re interested I can make us some breakfast?” Wednesday offered. Enid’s stomach getting to answer before her as it let out an audible growl at the mere mention of food. Causing Enid to blush slightly before Wednesday led them into the kitchen and sat Enid down at the impressively sized island. All of it done in some sort of black stone as the rest of the space. Very much matching Enid’s idea of how Wednesday would live
Wednesday ended up cooking something akin to a hangover feast. Somehow managing to have both pancakes and scrambled eggs on the go before Enid had even realized what was being prepared. All of it was decidedly delicious as the two of them ate together sat at the kitchen island. The food severely helping Enid’s unsure stomach and throbbing head while they made easy smalltalk. Enid complaining about her colleagues, and Wednesday explaining some difficulties their team had been having since there was a tournament coming up. Most of seemingly boiling down to her and Bianca not being on speaking terms for the past few weeks. Something Enid was still burning to know more about but she didn’t want to pry where she wasn’t welcome.
In the end Wednesday had to politely inform Enid that she had plans later in the day and that she’d need some time to get ready. Though at that point Enid had already stolen away the entire morning and then some. So she could blame the other girl for needing her space. So they exchanged goodbyes. Enid promising Wednesday to call her once she got home for good measure before she followed Enid to the door and let her out. After explaining just where in the city they were so Enid could catch a bus home.
“so how’s your frieeeend?” Yoko screamed from the living room almost as soon as Enid walked in the door. Enid honestly surprised that the other girl was still awake since she’d definitely been at work last night. Which usual left her knocked out till way into the afternoon
“she’s fine” Enid rolled her eyes as she walked into the living room herself
“was her bed comfy?” Yoko continued to tease from her spot on the couch
“I slept on the couch dumbass” Enid shot back as she walked towards the kitchen to get a glass of water. Her entire body screaming for the hydration
“oof that’s rough” Yoko winced “not even married yet and already being put on the couch for the night”
“you really are unbearable you know that right?” Enid asked shooting Yoko a warning look
“just calling em like I see em” Yoko shrugged “gothgirl seemed to care plenty for you last night when she was playing white knight”
“uhuh” Enid said as she emptied her glass “I could have sworn you said you were gonna back off on this?”
“fiiiiiine” Yoko sighed pushing herself off the couch “if you’re gonna ruin my fun I might as well get some more sleep”
“she said at one in the afternoon”
“watch it Sinclair or I’ll point out how you and gothgirl are uhauling after one drink”
“ass” Enid laughed as Yoko snuck back into her room. Slamming the door behind her, leaving Enid alone with her hangover and the memories of the night before
