“Three, two, one…” Beatrice counts and her phone starts ringing.
“I’ll leave you to it,” Ava kisses her forehead and takes their teacups in the kitchen.
It’s Valentine’s day and the announcement of her interview just dropped. Of course, Areala calls her.
“What is this, Beatrice?” Areala immediately asks when Beatrice picks up.
“I did an interview with Oprah and it will air later,” Beatrice tells her sarcastically. “You should tune in.”
“Cancel it right now,” she commands.
“You won’t even ask what we talked about?”
“I think I already know,” Areala is really pissed.
“Areala, I’m letting you go,” Beatrice says. “Effective immediately, you are no longer my publicist. I would issue a statement that says you are no longer connected to me in any way. I’m sorry.”
“You are making a big mistake,” she tells her.
“I think this is the best decision I ever made because now, I feel good. I feel light. I feel free,” Beatrice tells her. “I know we have been too much together, but we just don’t share the same ideas and values anymore,” Bea tells her. “I will forever cherish the time we had together and I will always be grateful on how you helped me but I know you know this has becoming more and more toxic.”
“I only wanted to look out for you,” Areala’s voice suddenly cracks. “For your mom. My bestfriend.”
“You have done everything you can,” Beatrice tells her. “I told you, I would forever be thankful. But please understand that I need to make my own way now. I won’t be lost because you have taught me so much.”
“Okay,” Areala took a deep breath. “I’m sorry if I suffocated you.”
“Don’t worry about me anymore,” Beatrice tells her. “You have done enough. Just chill out from now on. Enjoy your life.”
“What about your mom?”
“I’m going to call her after this,” Beatrice says. “She’s going to find out with the rest of the world. I think that’s for the best.”
“I wish you all the best.”
“Thank you.”
“Goodbye, Beatrice.”
“Goodbye, Areala.”
Beatrice hangs up and leans back in the couch.
“How did it go?” Ava walks in after a few moments.
“She didn’t go ballistic as I expected,” Bea says.
“That’s good, right?”
“Yup,” Beatrice says and hugs Ava by the waist. “Why are you wearing an apron? And why does it have sugar in it?”
“I’m baking you a cheesecake,” Ava chuckles. “Do you want blueberries or strawberries?”
“Strawberries, please,” Beatrice beams.
“Call your mom,” Ava tells her as she walks back in the kitchen.
Beatrice takes a deep breath and dials her mom.
“Hi, Bea!” Suzanne greets her.
“Hi, Mom, how are you?”
“I’m great!” she tells her. “I’m so absorbed in knitting right now! I discovered this Olympic swimmer named Tom Daley and he inspired me to take up knotting again.”
“Well, I hope you aren’t looking at men wearing Speedos when you discovered him,” Beatrice jokes.
“I saw him in a knitting page in Facebook,” Suzanne reveals.
“Oh no, you are on Facebook again?”
“Just to talk to my old friends and follow knitting, gardening and cooking communities,” she tells her. “No showbiz stuff. I know that will only make me stressed. And you get stressed when I am stressed.”
“I just don’t want you to get sick again,” Beatrice says. “What are you knitting?”
“I knitted a pair of socks and a hat already,” Suzanne chuckles. “I am now attempting to make a sweater. This Tom is really talented.”
“I bet he is.”
“Do you know he is gay?” Suzanne says, surprised. “He has a husband and they have a kid, can you believe that?”
Hearing Suzanne’s glee in talking about them made her hopeful. “Listen, Mom, I don’t know if you saw it but I have an interview with Oprah that will air later.”
“Oh, wow!” Suzanne says. “Why didn’t you tell me you filmed an interview with her?”
“It’s a surprise for everyone,” she tells her. “I want you to watch it.”
“What would it be about?”
“You’ll see. It’s a surprise,” she chuckles a little.
“All right, I’ll be tuning in.”
“Okay, I’ll let you get back to knitting.”
“Oh, send me Ava’s measurements, will you? I want to make her a sweater too when I finish with yours.”
“Okay,” Bea smiles. “I love you, Mom.”
“I love you too.”
After she hangs up, she goes to the kitchen and embraces Ava from behind.
“Good talk?”
“Yeah, she wants to knit you a sweater,” Beatrice chuckles and kisses her shoulders.
“Maybe for Christmas this year, we’ll go to Aspen with her and wear the sweaters,” Ava says.
“Oh, you’re planning that far ahead?”
“I just know that whatever I do, you’ll be there next to me,” Ava faces her and kisses her.
“Don’t make me cry,” Beatrice smiles.
“I love you,” Ava caresses her face and looks deeply in her eyes. “So much, it makes my chest hurt when you are not next to me. In a good way though.”
“I love you too,” Beatrice says. “So much that it’s hard to breathe when you’re not with me.”
The rest of the day, they barely used their phone to check on social media. Beatrice just shared the announcement on all her accounts as soon as Oprah’s team posted it. Ava wanted to share it to but she thought it would be a dead giveaway so she didn’t.
At lunch, they made each other’s favorite. Beatrice cooked carbonara while Ava made some Greek salad. They talk about how they should do a Europe vacation after Bea’s tour and Ava’s films.
They took an afternoon nap and Ava ran lines with Beatrice. At six just as they were preparing a simple dinner, the doorbell rings. Both rushes to the door and sees two delivery guys standing next to each other, both holding a bouquet of roses.
“You didn’t!” both exclaims under their breath.
“We both can’t be seen by them,” Beatrice says. “Not yet.”
“I’ll get it then,” Ava says.
Beatrice hides behind the door.
“Hi, thank you,” Ava says sweetly to the guys.
“You got hella suitors Ma’am,” one said.
“Dude, that’s Ava Silva!” the other one said.
“That’s me,” she chuckles. “Here,” she gave them tip. “Uhm, actually I have something on the stove,” she tells them when they were still standing.
“Uh, yeah, thanks,” one of the men says. “Happy Valentine’s.”
“Happy Valentine’s.”
“Same to both of you,” Ava says.
Beatrice full on laughs when Ava closes the door.
“Shut up,” Ava rolls her eyes and gives Beatrice the bouquet she ordered.
“I love you,” Beatrice kisses her.
“I love you too,” Ava smiles.
“You can read the note later,” Beatrice tells her.
“Damn, I didn’t even wrote one,” Ava smiles sheepishly. “It just says “I love you, always and forever’.”
“My love, that’s enough to make my heart swell I fear it might explode,” Beatrice embraces her.
“Oh shit, our dinner!”
After dinner, they sat on the living room, waiting for Oprah’s show to start. Ava cries as she reads what Beatrice says in the note. Beatrice comforts her by kissing her all over her face. At exactly 7PM, the show starts.
“Now, tell us all about these secret moments,” Oprah asks Beatrice.
“As I said, it’s best to start from the beginning. This way, they would understand it more,” Beatrice answers.
“Okay, where would you start?”
“I’ll start with the topic that I evaded or my team made me evade for years,” Beatrice tells her.
“Is this about your father?” Oprah guesses.
“Yes,” Beatrice nods. “My father left us when I was five. He went back to Singapore. Turns out he has a family there before he had us.”
“He has a family in Singapore and then when he went here in America, he has another family which is you and your mother, correct?”
“You got it right,” Beatrice nods again. “It would be bad for my image that people know of that. So we did everything to hide that. In my Wikipedia pages, it says there that my parents got divorced when I was five. They didn’t divorce because their marriage was void after all. And when people asks, I chose not to answer.”
“Did you reach out to your father when you started to be known?” Oprah asks.
“When I had the means and the money, I searched for him,” Beatrice reveals. “I wanted to have some sort of closure, you know?”
“What did you find out?”
“He died three years after he left us to go back to his first family,” Beatrice reveals. “He found out he had cancer and that’s the reason he left us. He felt guilty about his first family so he wanted to make amends.”
“But he also hurt you when he left,” Oprah comments.
“I know,” Beatrice sighs. “It hurt me and my mom for the longest time but as I got older, I understood.”
“Would you say you have forgiven him?”
“I could say I do,” Beatrice nods. “People are meant to make mistakes. Nobody is perfect. And as long as they admitted and repented for their mistakes, then who am I to not forgive. I mean, it did took a long time but eventually, I did.”
“How did he apologized when you said he died three years after he left you?”
“The investigator I hired, he got to talk to her first wife,” Beatrice says. “He wrote me letters that he wasn’t able to send because of his shame. I got them when I was eighteen, I think? I read them over and over again, feeling the anger, disappointment, hurt, joy and other emotions. I did that for years until one day I realized that I have forgiven him.”
“You must have a big heart to be able to do so,” Oprah tells her. “That’s hard.”
“It is,” Beatrice agrees. “But the only way to get over the pain is just through.”
“I agree,” Oprah says. “Also, things cannot be just black and white. There are infinite shades of grey in between.”
Ava is crying quietly beside Beatrice. When she first heard this in the shoot, she was so shocked. Beatrice never told her about it. She fought the urge to run and hug her there. But now, in the comfort of their own home, she hugged her tight and let her tears fall for what her beloved went through.
“I love you,” she kisses Beatrice on the lips.
“I love you too,” Beatrice smiles at her.
