The Birth of a Monster
Korra had been training at the white lotus compound since she was discovered as the world’s new Avatar at the age of 4. She was a quick learner and was progressing at a good rate under Master Katara’s water bending lessons just at the age of 8. It was after one of these lessons that she decided to go to the stable where her polar bear dog Naga was at.
It had been a long and exhausting day for her. Night had already fallen and the smell of seaweed noodles reached her nose as she made her way to her best friend. The crunch of snow beneath her feet as she got closer and closer had the big polar bear dog perk her head up. She too was waiting for her.
As she opened the door to the stable, Naga had rushed over and trampled her owner into the snow and began licking her face.
She laughed as she scratched behind Naga’s ears, “I missed you too girl!”
Once she had calmed down Korra went to check if she had enough water and food before she headed inside for her own dinner. Her mom’s seaweed noodles were just the best and when she was younger and Naga was just a pup she would secretly feed Naga some of her food. The little memory made her smile as she filled Naga’s bowl with some fish. As she was digging in, Korra did not hear the silent footsteps in the snow that were coming closer and closer until she saw a telltale sign of Naga’s ear twitch as she came to a halt with her food.
She turned around and saw a pale man in a black suit with a white cape that was as white as the snow around them. His hair was short and pin straight and reached a bit past his ears but his eyes...they were unnaturally red and had slit like pupils. His gaze was piercing as he made his way towards her.
She could not afford to be scared right now, she had to defend herself and Naga from this intruder. How he had gotten inside the compound she does not know nor did she have the time to think about it.
Standing her ground with Naga baring her teeth at him, “Who are you and what do you want.” She stood up tall and got into a defensive stance, and if it came to fighting she at least had the advantage due to her surroundings. Or so she thought.
The man just kept coming forward with no fear in his eyes and stopped just in front of her with a small smile. “There’s no need to be afraid of me,” he said as he looked down upon her. He was tall but Korra wasn’t afraid, she couldn’t.
There was something about his eyes that seemed familiar to her without ever seeing anyone with eyes like his.
The man turned his head slightly to Naga and with one look she was cowering away from him and started to hide behind Korra. She asked again.
“Who are you?”
“My name is Muzan Kibutsuji but you may never utter it to anyone.” He spoke so eloquently but the look in his eyes made Korra want to run.
She planted her feet more into the snow in case worse came to worst. She was the Avatar, it was her duty to protect the world and the people.
“What do you mean by that?” She thought maybe she could stall him if her parents and Katara came looking for her if she wasn’t done with whatever this man wanted or needed.
But the next moment happened too fast for her to do anything.
He had pushed his finger into her forehead and she became still as a boulder. Even Naga was cowering behind her from the look he gave her.
She felt something rushing through her entire body, it felt like she was on fire.
Just as quick as it happened it ended. Muzan pulled his finger back and held the side of her head with one hand and spoke once again, “You will be a special demon, Korra.”
She could not speak even though she tried and Muzan continued on as Korra’s body started to twitch.
“You may no longer be touched by the sun but in return be shrouded by darkness.” He left her with those words and vanished. With no more support she fell right into the snow and gasped as she struggled for dominance over her body. Memories of a life of whom she did not know flashed through her brain and replaced most of her memories. She consumed them as knowledge she needed.
She scratched at the snow covered ground trying to find balance in stabilizing herself while Naga tried to comfort her in the process of what was happening. She gasped for air, for control back over her body.
A sense of loyalty for the man, Muzan, came over her. Ingrained in her.
With her eyes she could see her nails stretch into sharp claws, with her teeth she could feel fangs growing and with her body finally coming to a rest, she felt a different type of hunger come over her. Animalistic almost.
Naga got off of her and backed up to see if her owner was okay but noticed a difference in her scent.
Her mouth was slightly parted as she got up and a little bit of drool dripped from her mouth. She paid Naga no mind as she walked out the stable to find something or someone to satiate her hunger.
There was a White Lotus guard that seemed to be looking for Korra as he spotted her coming from the stables. He rushed over to escort the Avatar to dinner but unfortunately for him he was about to become her dinner.
As he got close to her, her hunger took over and with her sharp nails pierced through his stomach and ripped out his intestines. He fell to the ground on his back and Korra dug into his stomach, stuffing herself with his entrails while he screamed. The snow around was no longer pure white snow but stained red as the blood on her hands and mouth.
The screams were heard loud enough that Master Katara, her parents and the White Lotus guards were on their way rushing to the scene but what they saw terrified them.
She of course could not hear anything around her, too engrossed in eating the flesh of her victim. Each and every bite was savory and tantalizing on her tongue that she did not want to stop. As she slowed down, she looked up to see everyone watching in fear.
What they saw were piercing blue eyes with slits in them.
A demon.
She got up from the bloody mess and started to walk towards her parents who cautiously took steps toward their daughter. However, a couple steps in and she collapses face down into the snow. Her father rushes to pick her up and follows Katara and his wife into the building in a rush to help their daughter.
But she could not be helped, she was a demon now.
She had to live like this.
Shrouded by darkness.
And by the time she wakes up, she knows what she’s become.
