"I can't tell you how pleased I am with Scot's progress this year." Scot's teacher beamed at Sam and then Eric. "If we still gave out gold stickers his report card would be covered in them."
"That's good right?" Eric smiled, a little bemused at the woman's enthusiasm.
"It's more than good. It's excellent. When Scot came to us he was lagging in both academics and..." She paused, obviously searching for the right words. "The subtleties of peer interactions."
Eric snorted. "Nothing about Scot is subtle."
"Very true." She nodded her head in agreement. "But, in the time that Scot has been with us he has made friends and begun to find himself and his place in our school community. Your patience and flexibility in allowing Scot to explore his identity safely has made all the difference."
Eric grinned and turned to Sam who was smiling proudly. "I guess that means we get a gold star too."
