Girls Night

“I know what we should do next!” You yelled a little too loudly from the makeshift bar where you were refilling your drink. “We should go around the circle, and each one of us say which Avenger we would want to be with if we weren’t already with one,” you continued slowly as you sat down on the couch beside Natasha, wondering if what you said made any sense considering how tipsy you were.

“What?” Pepper asked.

“For instance, who would you pick if you weren’t with Tony? And you couldn’t pick Tony,” you said.

“Is this a good idea?” Wanda asked.

“As good an idea as all this drinking,” you replied.

All the male Avengers had been kicked out of the living room for the evening so that you could have a girls’ night in. So far the topics of conversation had been pretty safe, and you felt that needed changing.

“Come on, it’ll be fun!” You whined.

“I’ll do it,” Gamora said. “I’d pick Thor.”

“Thank you! Excellent choice! I’ll drink to that,” you said, taking a large sip. “Okay, Pep, your turn.”

“I’m going to guess Dr. Strange,” Natasha said.

“No!” Pepper said quickly. “No.”

“Why not?” Natasha asked. “He seems like he’d be your type.”

“He’s too much like Tony,” you said, getting a few looks. Directing your attention to Pepper, you added, “Am I wrong?”

“No, you’re not wrong,” she answered, pushing her hair out of her face. “Don’t misunderstand. I love Tony like I’ve never loved anyone else, otherwise I wouldn’t be marrying him, but if I was going to pick another guy it would definitely be someone a little....easier.”

“Give us a name already,” Hope said.

“Captain Rogers...no offense, y/n,” Pepper quickly added.

“There’s no room for offense here. I take it as a compliment. Hope?”

“Dr. Strange...or Dr. Banner.”

Leaning over, you whispered in Natasha’s ear, “Better watch out,” which earned you a playful, but slightly painful smack on the arm.

“Moving on,” Natasha said as she watched you rub your sore bicep. “I believe it’s my turn. So...which am I supposed to be picking? Who I might could actually make a relationship work with, or just a good time?”

“Either....both....it’s up to you,” Gamora replied.

“Hmm....for a relationship I really don’t know. But, for a good time...I can’t believe I’m saying this. Give me a minute.”

Natasha stopped talking long enough to gulp down the rest of her drink before saying, “Barnes.”

Her choice was met with cat-calls and wolf-whistles from the whole group.

“It was that chokehold in Germany, wasn’t it?” you asked with a wink, while scooting out of arm’s reach.

“The guy tried to kill me three times, and I really can’t stand him, but he is a good looking man.”

“That he is,” Wanda finally spoke up.

“I guess that means you’d pick Barnes too, huh?” Pepper asked her.

“I think she only has eyes for Vision,” Natasha said. “I’m not sure she notices anyone else.”

“Yeah, right,” you said.

“Ooh, sounds like y/n knows something the rest of us don’t,” Pepper said.

“Don’t you dare say anything,” Wanda said, staring you down.

“I won’t, but you should. It’s just for fun. Besides, if you don’t, they’re all going to think that it’s Parker.”

She glared at you before whispering something no one could hear.

“A little louder,” you said.

“Clint.”

The room was suddenly filled with a chorus of “awws.”

“He can’t find out I said that. He’s married, and he’d think it was weird, and—“

“No one’s going to tell him. Besides, it’s kind of adorable,” Natasha said.

Trying to get attention off of herself, Wanda said to you, “Your turn to share.”

“Oh who could she possibly want?” Hope began. “She’s with Captain Steve Rogers. He’s beautiful.”

“And muscular,” Gamora chimed in.

“And kind,” Pepper added.

“Brave,” Wanda said.

“Loki,” you interrupted, earning astonished stares from everyone.

“Seriously?” Gamora asked.

“Yes.”

“The First Avenger to the God of Mischief?” Hope asked.

“Yeah, why is that so hard to believe?”

“It’s just not what any of us were expecting,” Pepper said.

“Because it’s crazy,” Natasha added.

“Crazier than picking the guy that tried to kill you?” You asked her. “Look, it’s kind of like Pepper said. I love Steve to death. I think he’s the greatest guy in the galaxy. He’s everything you girls said he is and more. He’s loyal, reliable, dependable....but he can be extremely predictable. I think a little mischief would be exciting. And let’s be honest, Loki would make for one wild ride in that department.”

Shaking her head, Natasha raised her glass in the air and said, “To the ones who never were.”

“And hopefully never will be,” Gamora added, giving you a concerned look as the six glasses clinked together.

————————

You awoke to the sound of a knock on your bedroom door and a familiar male voice asking if he could come in.

“It’s open,” you called out.

“Good morning,” Steve said with a smile as he came in and sat on the edge of the bed. “How are you feeling this morning?”

“Just a touch under the weather,” you answered, trying to not let on how big your headache really was.

“I thought you might be. You girls had a pretty late night. I made breakfast. Give me a minute to get it together and we can eat in here if you like?”

“Typical Steve,” you thought to yourself before saying out loud, “That’d be nice.”

He leaned forward, gave you a quick kiss, then got up and headed out the door. As you watched him leave, you remembered what you had told your friends about him being so predictable.

“Well, I never said it was always a bad thing.”
