Bucky x reader

In spite of his current predicament, Bucky couldn’t stop his attention from drifting to the woman standing alongside Steve. You kept watching him in his glass prison, wearing an expression that he couldn’t quite figure out. It wasn’t fear, or anger, or even pity; it wasn’t any of the emotions he would’ve expected. Even though he couldn’t decipher its meaning yet, deep down he knew he’d do anything to see you look at him that way again.

Thanks for every twist, every turn
For the way you made sure
All my roads led to her

“Are you alright?” You asked, crouching down in front of him as Steve freed his metal arm from the machine.

“Yeah,” he said, letting his eyes travel over your face. He noticed the beginnings of an ugly bruise on your neck and he hated himself for causing it.

“I’m sorry for that,” he said, averting his gaze.

You moved your head so that he was looking at you again.

“I wouldn’t have gotten into this line of work if I couldn’t take a little hit,” you said with a smile.

He noticed that it was a warm smile that made your whole face light up. You were wearing an expression not unlike the one you’d had when he’d first seen you. Now that you were mere inches apart, he was able to figure out that the emotion that adorned your features, both then and now, was compassion...the purest form of love.

I know I was saved
The night that she gave
This drifter’s heart a home

“See? I’m a man of my word,” Bucky said, standing at the top of the Quinjet’s ramp watching you and the other occupants of the Raft board the aircraft, leaving the prison behind. “I told you when we left that I’d come back for you, no matter what.”

His face was covered in days old cuts that had started to heal, and all that remained of his left arm was frayed wires and jagged edges of metal.

“Your face, your arm,” you whispered. “What happened to you?”

“Oh, just a fight. I wouldn’t have gotten into this line of work if I couldn’t take a little hit,” Bucky said with a smile, causing you to give him one in return.

“Steve is taking me to that guy T’Challa after he drops the rest of you off. He’s going to fix me up. Guess he feels bad about trying to kill me.”

“I want to go with you,” you quickly replied.

Staring at you, Bucky couldn’t contemplate why you’d give a damn about what happened to a man like him, but he hoped you always would.

I’ve been broken again and again
But I need all the cracks in my shattered heart
Cause that’s where her love gets in

“You really sure you want to go back in?” You asked Bucky as you glanced over at the cryochamber.

“I think it’s best for everybody that I do, at least until they can get all that stuff out of my head. I can’t control my own mind.”

He turned his attention to the other side of the glass wall where Steve was still standing, giving the two of you a few minutes alone before coming in. Bucky had already asked his old friend to take extra good care of you while he was under.

Although he had no intention of telling you yet, Bucky had already decided that he loved you, and nothing was going to change that. He didn’t know if he had the right to expect anything more than friendship from you, after the things he’d done, but it really didn’t matter. You had already given him more than he felt he deserved, and whatever else you offered him on top of it, he’d accept without question.

You were his own personal angel, sent to give him hope and strength when he needed it most.

He was drawn from his thoughts by the feeling of your hand resting on his.

“I’ll stay if you want me to,” you offered.

“No, I don’t know how long I’ll be under. You should be with your friends. But, if it’s not too much to ask, could yours be the first face I see when they bring me out?”

“It’s not too much,” You said, beginning to choke up. “I’ll be here when you wake up.”

You reached up and ran your hand along his scruffy jawline before leaning in and giving him a tender kiss on the lips.

Pulling back, you whispered, “I don’t know if you can dream while you’re in there, but if you can, I hope they’ll be sweet.”

“They will be now.”

Thank God for this woman, amen.
