The Hobbit- Heroes
You clap along to Dwalin’s viola playing and Bofur’s flute tooting along with the rest of the Company. Everyone was either laughing or smiling, even Thorin. You cheered when the two musical dwarves finish their jig and applauded.
“Right lads!” Bofur sang. “Who’s gonna be next?”
You immediately duck your head, hoping no one would call on you to entertain next. You were hopeless at singing and you had never picked up an instrument in your life! Of course, Kili could always be trusted.
“Here! Y/N hasn’t gone yet!”
“Aye, time for the lassie to sing for us!” Gloin shouted.
You look up and shake your head vigorously. “Oh no! You don’t want to hear me.”
“Why don’t you sing something from your home?” Bilbo suggested kindly. Oh that dear, sweet Hobbit! His smile could melt the ear points off an Elf! But his suggestion wasn’t a good one.
“Songs from where I’m from are…way different than here,” you try to explain, but the Company kept loudly egging you on until you were forced to sing something, if only to stop the terrible noise.
You go through the Rolodex of songs in your brain and clear your throat, avoiding eye contact with them all.
I, I will be king
And you, you will be queen
Though nothing will drive them away
We can beat them, just for one day
We can be Heroes, just for one day
And you, you can be mean
And I, I'll drink all the time
'Cause we're lovers, and that is a fact
Yes we're lovers, and that is that
Though nothing will keep us together
We could steal time, just for one day
We can be Heroes, for ever and ever
What d'you say?
I, I wish you could swim
Like the dolphins, like dolphins can swim
Though nothing, nothing will keep us together
We can beat them, for ever and ever
Oh we can be Heroes, just for one day
I, I will be king
And you, you will be queen
Though nothing will drive them away
We can be Heroes, just for one day
We can be us, just for one day
I, I can remember (I remember)
Standing by the wall (by the wall)
And the guns shot above our heads (over our heads)
And we kissed, as though nothing could fall (nothing could fall)
And the shame was on the other side
Oh we can beat them, for ever and ever
Then we could be Heroes, just for one day
We can be Heroes
We can be Heroes
We can be Heroes
Just for one day
We can be Heroes
We're nothing, and nothing will help us
Maybe we're lying, then you better not stay
But we could be safer, just for one day
Oh-oh-oh-ohh, oh-oh-oh-ohh
Just for one day
You close your mouth as the last note passes your lips and shyly look up at the Company through your bangs. They were all staring at you with varying degrees of awe and astonishment. Even Gandalf had ceased chewing on his pipe to stare at you. Once again you duck your head and play with the ends of your boots.
“Told you I couldn’t sing,” you mumble.
“Lass, if that was you singing bad, then I think the Valar themselves will come down from their mountain to hear you sing well,” Balin said with a comforting smile.
“Go on; sing us another one!” Nori encouraged with a sharp nudge to your side.
“Oh, don’t pester her!” Dori admonished brusquely.
You sigh as the dwarves start shouting again.
So much for keeping them quiet.
