"What can you do when the one who owns your heart is gone?
Go mad to the world until you go insane.
"Enid, it's already 2AM, why are you here so suddenly?" Yoko asked hoarsely, before she saw Enid shivering and wet from the rain, tears streaming down her face. "Enid?" Her tone softened, ushering her inside their unit.
"Yoko... I… Wednesday...?" Enid stuttered before she lost her consciousness. Thankfully, Yoko caught her before she hit the ground. “Divina!” Shouting for her sleeping girlfriend. “Come quick !” She hastily carried her bestfriend inside and carefully placed her on their couch.
Completely startled with Yoko’s shouting, Divina sleepily rubs her eyes. Trudging to where her girlfriend is, barely awake. Nuzzling her head at the vampire’s neck, trying to will away the sleepiness in her eyes, before focusing on their unconscious friend.
“What do you think happened?” She softly asked.
Yoko shrugged and continue to gently pat her bestfriend’s head who was whimpering with tears rolling down her face in her state of unconsciousness. Her heart broke seeing her bestfriend cry even when she was supposedly be sleeping. Desperately reaching out for their goth friend, for Wednesday. Mumbling her name like a prayer.
Few more minutes later, Enid suddenly woke up. "Yoko... where's Wednesday?" she panicked. Yoko scoffed before helping Enid sit up and Divina quickly went to the kitchen and offer the glass of water to her. "Hey, drink it gently.” Divina helped Enid who is barely managing to keep her tears at bay.
“I have no idea. You’re completely soaked from the rain. Just where the hell did you come from in the middle of the night. Did Wednesday drag you to some creepy place again. Did you guys go to the crypt again?" Yoko growled, trying her best not to scream and startle the blonde she-wolf. Enid flinched at the angry tone from the vampire and just looked down at her lap, biting her lip to stop herself from crying any further.
"I'm not angry at you, E. I'm just fucking furious with Wednesday". Yoko tried to softened her tone, reaching out to you and gently stroking your hair until you calmed down. "Why do you keep running back to her? I already lost count how many times this has happened to you Enid. You always follow her." She can understand how Wednesday can simply dismissed everyone bar the she-wolf. But for her to continuously dragged her bestfriend to any dangerous adventure and remains apathetic to Enid’s emotions is infuriating. Divina squeezed her hand, trying to calm her down, afraid that it will make Enid sadder. “Breathe love. You’re making Enid afraid of your outburst. We cannot help her in any way if you let your anger consumed you.”
Enid looked around, trying to avoid the piercing stare from both of her friends. Wringing her hand together. "I love her. I transformed for her." Enid sadly whispered as she glanced down at the floor, afraid to see the pity in her friends’ eyes. “Because of her” She whispered.
"Why?" That's the hardest question someone could probably ask her. Her friends, mostly Yoko, kept on insisting to perform the ritual to break the connection. The other nightshades might not know but Yoko knew that one sided marking between werewolf/human mates are dangerous to the wolf. After all the way a wolf mark a human is almost similar to a vampire claiming its own mate. She’s terrified that sooner or later her bestfriend will suddenly drop dead in the middle of Jericho or Nevermore Academy.
"Because... Wednesday loves me..." Enid weakly muttered, whimpering from the oozing anger of the vampire. “She is my mate, Yoko. I cannot just break our connection in a whim.
"Love?" Yoko spat and stood up, pacing back and forth, trying to calm herself down. Sighing, Divina reached out for Enid and gently hug the crying wolf as her girlfriend continue her tirade. "You mean that Wednesday kept on taking advantage of you. Wednesday always does. You said she loves you yet always choose to remain apathetic. And you are supposed to be in a fucking relationship E. I understood the first time it happened. She was afraid that you might die so she hid everything from you, from everyone. But the second time? Third time? Then this time? Will this be the last time or what? Is the stalker way more important than you?" She raged. "Why?! You don’t even carry her mark but you have hers. When the fuck will you complete the marking?" Yoko said in defeat.
"Yoko, please... stop. Please. I can’t. Don’t ask me this." Enid begged. Rationally, she knew that she needs to complete the marking or perform the ritual, that it is for the best for everyone. But, she greatly respect Wednesday and after Tyler’s betrayal, Enid has been trying her best not to make Wednesday feel force anything beyond she can actually give. She always clings to that small hope that Wednesday will mark her soon. Hopefully.
"Love shouldn't hurt Enid. Love nourishes and protects the people involved. " Divina held her tightly in her arms. "You deserve someone who will protect and love you with their whole being without dismissing you, Enid. We all deserve the love that we give to others." She gently kissed Enid’s forehead, like how she always does every time Enid comes crying because the furs used to bully her before her transformation.
"I'm sorry Di, Yoko. For being weak. I’m sorry. I’m really sorry for being pathetic." Enid whispered. "And thank you for always being here for me." She embraced Divina tightly and looked up at Yoko, throwing her biggest puppy eyes, opening her arms for the vampire.
“Whether you want it or not. Divina and I are always here for you pup." Yoko sadly smiles while she wiped your tears away. "Please Enid. I’m begging you tell her or do the ritual. But for the love of Dracula, you do not have much time left.” Her voice crack, pain sipping in as she thinks about how much time her bestfriend has.
“Time?” Divina questioned in surprise. “Are you leaving Enid?” She asked. Enid shook her head. “I…” She began, trying to compose herself, contemplating whether or not to tell Divina. “It’s a well-guarded secret in werewolves and Yoko only knew because of how old her coven is. Probably only vampires from old covens know about it from all the outcasts.” Enid looked up at Yoko, asking whether it is fine to tell her girlfriend or not. She trusts Divina but this is much bigger than her, it is a secret in the werewolf community. Yoko nodded her head and flashed an encouraging smile.
“Werewolves mate for life…. Everyone even normies know that. But our ways and reasons are both similar and different to other outcasts. We exchange marks with our mates not only to show our bonding but to have balance between the two. The cycle of exchanging energy and life between the two and syncing into one. One cannot live without the other as soon as the exchange stabilize. The position of the mark when it comes to wolves don’t matter as they are from the same species but when we have mates from another outcasts, the marks are always on the ring finger to signify the bond between the two. Rarely, when werewolf has a human mate, they are expected to exchange marks through the neck like the vampires to balance the difference between two species. The human draws more energy and life from the wolf because of some physiology so when a human already marked their wolf, the wolf should do the same as soon as possible.”
Divina choked when she learned about the difference of marking of werewolves. She knew about the mark on the ring finger but always thought that the new generation of wolves prefer that one as it resembles the normies wedding tradition. Hell, no one knew that they draw energy much less life from each other. “Oh Enid.” She whimpered, heart aching when she finally realized where Yoko’s concern is coming from, their friend is slowly dying and by the looks of it, Enid doesn’t have much time.
“One sided marking is fatal for the wolves because gradually we lost our life. The human mate draws more of our energy and life and they are unable to return or sync with us. The cycle is broken.” Enid sadly said. Acknowledging that she is slowly dying because of her love for her mate is a hard pill to swallow but she long accepted that Wednesday is fully unable to return the same feelings that she has. Everyday she wakes up in their room, convincing herself that Wednesday will mark her soon. But there is only so much that a werewolf can take. It’s not like she has time left anyway. She chuckled bitterly.
Divina starts to plead. “Please E. Tell her or do the ritual.” She values the she-wolf even before she started dating her bestfriend. Her bubbly attitude was always something she admired from her friend. And when she started dating Yoko, Enid treated her like a sister, like how she always treats Yoko.
“I’ll think about it guys.” Enid finally folded to their begging. Suppressing a yawn, she tried to stand up and prepare to leave their room when Yoko grabbed her hand. “Stay. Sleep here and deal with it tomorrow pup.” Yoko gently led her to her bed and tucked their wolf. Divina kissed her forehead before finally letting her succumb to Morpheus.
It has been 5 days since Enid’s major breakdown at Yoko and Divina’s room. She was dutifully trying to finish her homework at their room while her girlfriend was finishing her writing time. She plans to ask Wednesday to mark her tonight as full moon is coming soon. Completely absorbed with her homework, she didn’t notice that Wednesday was already done with her writing and was preparing to leave.
When she finally noticed that the clacking sound from the typewriter ceased, Enid glanced at the other side of the room looking for her girlfriend. “Where are you going?” Enid asked as soon as she saw Wednesday grabbed her usual satchel with Thing perched on her shoulders.
“I do not have to run everything by you Enid.” Wednesday coldly reply, staring at Enid, challenging her to question her. Enid stood up from her desk and fidgeted under her cold stare, rocking back and effort. Wednesday was determined to protect Enid from her mysterious stalker, even putting much distance between them and choosing to go out all the time. It pains her to act so cold and apathetic to Enid but if it is the only way for the wolf to run away from her, Wednesday will endure it until she finally deals with the stalker.
“Can we talk, please” She pleads to her girlfriend, reaching out to hold her hand but Wednesday recoiled and took a step backwards. Flitching from the complete rejection, Enid swallowed the lump in her throat, interlacing her fingers together, eyes dimmed as she tries to come up with something to say but ultimately choose not to. Wednesday’s heart broke when she saw the light from Enid’s eyes dimmed, tears starting gather but she remained still, drowning down her urge to comfort her love. Turning her back away from the goth girl, Enid went to her desk and choose to focus on her homework rather than force Wednesday to stay somewhere she clearly wants to leave.
Thing rapidly tapped at Wednesday to go and apologize and comfort Enid but Wednesday chose to ignore the hand and simply left their dorm without uttering another word to her girlfriend. She was in a rush to go to another part of the forest surrounding Nevermore, apparently Eugene accidentally covered one of the stalker’s lairs. Sighing, Enid finally let her tears drop as soon as she heard the door clicked, signaling that her girlfriend did leave her behind.
Enid has no idea how long she has been crying. She only stopped when she finally felt her throat starts burning up, like her body wants to throw up something. Standing up, she intends to grab a glass of water when she started coughing hard. When she looked at her hand, she was surprised that she started coughing blood.
“I didn’t think I have less than I thought.” She smiled bitterly, trying to calm her panic self to send a message to Yoko to go to her room. After a few minutes, Yoko and Divina came rushing, almost breaking their door.
“Fuck Enid.” Yoko shouted. “Divina call 911. Hurry” She rushed over to her friend who was still coughing blood and look as pale as Wednesday. Gently grabbing Enid and guided her to sit as she try her best to help her bestfriend.
“Please. Oh my god Enid. Please” She starts to cry. Divina went out to grab Principal Weems and the school nurse, hoping one of the adults can help them. Silently hoping that she will bump to Wednesday anywhere in school.
“Don’t die. Don’t fucking die on us Sinclair.” Yoko pleaded, completely helpless. Enid chuckled as another bout of blood coughing racked her body. Wheezing from the blood in her airways, Enid tried to reassure her bestfriend.
“Hey.” Reaching out to her vampire bestfriend, wiping away her tears. “Don’t cry Yoko. I’m finally able to rest, you know.” Enid tried to crack a joke. “I’m tired Yoyo.” She smiled ruefully at her bestfriend. “I love you. I love the rest of the nightshades.” Yoko gave her a glass of water, hoping that the ambulance or anyone will barge in and help them.
“Tell Wednesday…” Enid cries. “Tell her, I love her so much. Don’t hate her, okay? She’s not a psycho.” She laughed. “She just has a hard time expressing herself. Promise me Yoko.” Enid stared at her bestfriend who merely shook her head, unable to accept the fact that her bestfriend is laying in her arms dying.
“No. You have to tell her yourself.” Yoko shook her head. “I cannot not hate her Enid. You are asking too much. Please live.” She begs as she delicately cradle her bestfriend.
“You know that we all do crazy things when we love another.” Enid bitterly replied. She can feel that her strength is gradually decreasing. Her breathing is becoming more and more shallow as minutes pass by. As much as she tries to will her body to wait for the return of her mate, her body couldn’t take it anymore. Yoko started to gripped her so hard as soon as she heard her heart slowly losing it beat.
“Don’t leave us behind E. Who will be my best man during my wedding? It couldn’t be Ajax. He will probably get everyone high before the actual ceremony. Divina will murder us.” Yoko joked, willing for the blonde wolf to remain awake and wait for help.
“You’ll be fine…” Breathing hard, smiling weakly at her bestfriend as she reaches out to move the hair away from her eyes. “Thing will be my representative… and Wednesday will…” Enid mumbled before her hand dropped to the floor.
“No. No. No. Enid.” Yoko tried to find a pulse on Enid. Laying her down to the floor before trying to resuscitate her bestfriend. “Come on Enid.” Yoko kept on pushing on her chest. “Please.”
Suddenly the door opened and medics came rushing in with Principal Weems, Divina, Bianca and Ajax behind. The medics immediately went to the wolf and tried their best to find a pulse, thankfully they found one though it is very faint for a werewolf. They put her on the stretcher and asked for the others to clear a path towards the ambulance, intent to move as fast as they can.
“I’m sorry but only one is allowed in the ambulance.” One of the medics said.
“I’ll go.” Yoko volunteered without second thought. She rushed towards the blonde wolf and hold her hand. She glanced at her girlfriend, asking for a silent permission to go without her. Divina nodded her head and smiled at her. “I’ll go as soon as we find Wednesday. I love you, Yoko” Yoko smiled gratefully at her before turning back her attention to her bestfriend.
“What is going on Divina?” Bianca asked, completely confused on what happened to their werewolf friend. Bracing herself, Divina began to explain what Enid told her days ago. To say their friends were shocked was an understatement, even Principal Weems who rarely get shocks was sporting a shocked face.
“Does Addams know?” Bianca cut off. Divina shook her head.
“Well fuck. Wednesday will go into murder spree. She will turn this place upside down.” Ajax sighed. She loves Enid like a sister, even if their relationship wasn’t meant to be, he always wished the best for her and Wednesday, completely supporting her to pursue the scary goth girl.
“I have to contact Ms. Sinclair’s parents. If you excuse me, I will let you know when I am going to the hospital and you are free to join me. Please find Ms. Addams soons.” Principal Weems bid them goodbye, completely defeated that one of her kids was suffering and dying without her any knowledge. She must remain strong for everyone, especially when Wednesday learns about what happened to her beloved. Only a fool will turn a blind eye when it comes to Addams love. And when an Addams lose its love, no power can ever help in maintaining their sanity. She must hurry and contact her former roommate to properly deal with Wednesday.
“I don’t hate you, you know” Yoko said. Dropping to her knees and putting a bouquet of marigold and chrysanthemum on the tomb. It has been a year since they lost all lost the bubbly, energetic she-wolf and no one was more crush in losing her than Wednesday.
Wednesday remain quiet barely acknowledging the presence of the vampire. She continues to look at the tomb stone with her lover’s name eternally engraved. Forever taunting her. The she-wolf was buried at the Addams’ family cemetery at the Addams estate. She fought tooth and nail against Esther Sinclair to have Enid be buried in her family’s final resting place. After all, Enid was an Addams in everything but in name. A grave mistake that continues to torture Wednesday to this day. Until her dying days.
“I’m so sorry mi sol. I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry Enid. Please come back. I promise to change everything. Please mi sol. I cannot live a life without you. Cara mia, I need you.”
“She loves you so much to the point she wouldn’t mind dying for you Wednesday. So live. Live the life that Enid loves so much.” Yoko brought Wednesday back to reality when she mentioned Enid’s name.
“Don’t.” Voice cracked, raspy from crying. “I don’t deserve it.” Wednesday quietly said, swallowing the sob threatening to escape.
Looking down at the goth her, Yoko found two soulless eyes piercing her. Defeated, Yoko slumped her shoulder before mumbling, “Yeah, you don’t.” She agreed. “But Enid loves you so repay it by fucking living Addams.” She pointed out before dropping beside Wednesday with an arms’ length space to avoid being outright murdered in front of her bestfriend’s grave.
“But Enid loves you. And for her, you are worth it.” She gently said as she began to examine her. Yoko realizes that Wednesday lost so much weight after the death of Enid. The last time she saw her was during the funeral, she stopped going to Nevermore and remained in the Addams mansion, barely interacting with anyone. Only going out to stay at the tomb of her beloved or stay at her room where most of Enid’s possessions are.
“I miss her. I miss her so much that I have no idea how I can continue to live as an immortal vampire.” Yoko sniffed. “But you know, I am also very thankful that I got to know her. Got to spend so much precious time with her. For that I continue to hold on and hoping that somewhere out there in a few more hundreds of years. When Enid will be reborn and I get the chance to meet her again, I will greet her with a smile. And hopefully….” Yoko mumbled. “Hopefully, she is happy with the version of you who was reborn with her. That you make the right choices with her, by her and for you both Wednesday.”
Wednesday just hugged her knees tighter, content on listening to the vampire beside her while the cold evening wind continues to caress her skin. She has been sitting in front of the grave for hours, her body feels numb but she doesn’t care nor feel it. How can she feel it when her heart is frozen from losing its rightful owner.
Yoko stayed with Wednesday for 2 more hours, regaling stories about what is currently happening to their friends back at Nevermore Academy. Acting as if Enid is in front of them, listening to her gossip about their friends. Checking her watch, she decided it is time to go back to Nevermore Academy, where all of their friends are probably waiting for an update regarding Wednesday. Out of everyone, Yoko was the only one with the privilege to come down the Addams estate to visit her bestfriend as much as she wants, everyone else can visit once a month during the day where Wednesday is all holed up in her room.
Smoothing her clothes, Yoko gently pat Wednesday’s head who remained still, not even batting an eye on the vampire. No verbal threats from her. “Live Wednesday. It was her dying wish.” Yoko finally said before bidding goodbye and left Wednesday to succumb to her own heartbreak.
When Wednesday was sure she is finally alone again in front of her beloved. She succumbed to the wails and longing of her heart. Her body began to tremble from crying so much, her eyes are getting more and more red and bloodshot. Silently pleading to the moon, to any gods out there, to Lucifer and devil himself to bring back her wolf.
But that’s the beauty of the Addams curse. As much as they love and devote themselves to their one true soulmate to feel disgustingly happy eternally. When they lose their one, they are swallowed by their own darkness, slowly twisting their hearts that kept on yearning for their one until they die and join them on the other side.
