Age 24, The New Arrival
Leah POV
“Fatin-”
“I’ve got this.”
“Do you rea-”
“I said I’ve got this,” Fatin interrupted, lifting her hands to present the diaper; that whilst partially done up hung half off Kenneth whose legs flailed. “See! Perfect.”
“It’s on back to front and he only has one leg through it.”
“Maybe that’s the fashion trend right now.” Fatin stood, looking down at her handiwork. “I did shit, didn’t I?”
“You’ll get there.”
“I’m a grown adult who can't do up a fucking diaper,” she whined.
Leaning down Leah fixed it, reaching for a new diaper and showing Fatin again step by step. It wasn’t hard, but since they got home Fatin had been trying to hide the fact that she was panicking. She handled Kenneth like a vase and snapped when Samad lifted him too fast.
The doctors decided it was best that Fatin took a few weeks off. She was likely facing issues with the family bond due to his premature arrival. Her eyes glowed each morning before she settled, and Leah tried to calm her with soft words.
It also didn’t help that they grew accustomed to biting during her pregnancy, and now that was off the table with Leah at risk of pregnancy once more.
“You can use the caps,” Leah said that night. “They’re almost as effective as condoms.”
Fatin shook her head and kissed her neck instead.
The next day it was Fatin panicking at 4 am because Kenneth was crying. Normally he settled with contact and a bounce, but now he bawled until Fatin bit the bullet and woke Leah who was running on far too little sleep.
“I don’t know what he wants. I changed his diaper, I got his blanket, I sang to him and-”
Leah took him from her arms, cooing at him. “Are you out to drive your mummies insane this week?” she asked sweetly. She sat up in the bed and lifted her top, relaxing when he immediately drank. “He was hungry,” Leah said. “He did feed earlier last night than usual, perhaps it was that.”
She relaxed as she watched Leah and her son content. “He just needed food,” Fatin repeated.
“Yep, no need to worry babe.”
Fatin did settle. After another week her bond calmed, and she began to grow used to his crying and Leah’s mood swings. She took to doing most of the chores whilst Leah fed him, knowing she often got tired as of lately.
“Toni, stop trying to teach him sports terms. He’s a long way off his first words,” Leah said.
“No baby is too young to learn about a point guard’s purpose,” she justified.
Kenneth sat in Toni’s arms, adorned with a mini jersey that Toni got him with her team logo on. Since his birth, his aunts had got him a whole closet of merchandise. Kenneth had even appeared on Toni’s team Instagram in their colours alongside a grinning Toni.
She moved her gaze to Shelby who was standing beside her, gnawing on her lip. Her eyes were averted to the floor and Leah could feel the change in her disposition.
“You should tell her,” Leah said.
“What?” Shelby asked, her voice low as Toni and Fatin talked across the room.
“If you want a family, you should tell her. Toni loves Kenneth, I think she’ll be more than happy to start one with you. You’ll both make great mums.”
“It’s mid-season,” Shelby said. “She’s all busy with training and whatnot.”
“And Fatin was busy with major projects when I got pregnant. Alphas get temporary leave, and no time would be perfect for either of our mates. They’re always busy. But if it’s what you want, she will make it work. Toni loves you, and clearly, you’re not the only one thinking about kids.” She gestured to Toni who was now pulling team-coloured socks onto his tiny feet.
“I guess I could mention it.”
“Shelby, if I can read that you’re feeling low she will too. Tell her. Worst case scenario she says she wants to wait.”
Shelby swallowed. “Yeah, you’re right. I can do this.”
Fatin stretched that night, tugging her bra off and moving to moisturise her face. Leah’s gaze travelled across her breasts, and lower as she held back a groan.
Her hormones were still out of whack, and she flitted between not wanting to be touched and-
“Like what you see?” Fatin teased.
Tugging her closer, Leah placed a kiss on her nipple. “I always love what I see, and you know that.”
Fatin laid over her and kissed Leah until she was breathless. “What was wrong with Shelby earlier? She seemed off.”
“Kenneth,” she said. “I think she wants a family of her own. She did before we had him and now-”
“Each time she’s over here she feels like she’s looking at what she’s missing out on?” Fatin finished.
“Exactly. I think she’s going to mention it to Toni.”
“Good,” Fatin said. “She wants a family too. I mean she comes over here twice as often now and then stops by most nights with clothing deliveries. We’re running out of room for team merch.”
“I know, the cupboard is going to burst.”
“They’ll be fine,” Fatin said. “If Shelby doesn’t bring it up Toni will.”
It was four weeks later, sitting in their living room that Leah noticed it. Her sense of smell had always been stronger than most.
“You’re pregnant?” Leah screeched.
“I thought we had weeks before people would find out?” Toni whispered.
Fatin smiled. “She has strong senses. So, when did this happen?”
“The night Leah told me to speak to Toni. She um… she was very on board with the idea.”
Toni hid her smile behind her beer.
