After The Stormy Clouds...
It was a bright sunny day, with barely any clouds in the sky. I was out sightseeing when I looked up and saw rays similar to that of the sun. It was spherical and getting brighter and bigger with each passing moment. I observed in awe, placing a contemplative hand over my eyes.
What could it be?
My brain instantly got to work. It could be the simplest of things. Someone misplaced their keys. A kid losing their cat. Or a child getting lost. When it comes to investigating, I couldn't help it. It was in my DNA—a part of me. It was something I couldn't replace.
And I'm proud of it. I wanted to be this way. A gift of my upbringing. Who I wanted to be.
But how could I explain a ball of light coming towards the earth? Not to say I couldn't come up with any reasons, one being, how could it pass the space sensors and enter earth's orbit? We, civilians, should've heard of it by now. I'm sure the people in charge wouldn't want civilization to perish. Anything but a foregone conclusion.
Then, it got even brighter. Words of desperation came out of its mouth.
“Ame, please help me!”
They spoke, but upon closer inspection, I recognized it. It's someone that I'm acquainted with, and we had many fun and interesting experiences together.
But I was even more baffled.
From what I could remember, they have the power to disobey gravity. Why haven't they used their wings to fly? I'm sure they had the power to. It was anything but in the realm of capabilities. That I couldn't comprehend.
And they needed my help? I'm human so catching someone from those heights will have devastating consequences for both parties involved. Plus, I have pets to feed. They'll go crazy if I don't get them their fix.
“Ame!” they screamed. “I know you're fragile and stuff, so... Do well to break my fall and not get hurt!”
The mouth on this lassie.
How brazen can you be to not only demand I save you but also say not to get myself hurt in the same sentence? Wouldn't I get hurt because I tried to break your fall? Walking away will not only save me but also answer your request. Well, half of it. Dying is something that can wait until after I've achieved my goals.
As they got closer, I covered my eyes, then my vision went white. The falling ball was curled up even more, turning into the light like the final stages of a supernova. Taking my final look, I saw feathers peeling away from its body swept away by the wind in endless directions. Their form changed, and I let out a gasp reaching up protectively towards the falling creature. It landed in my hands, and I unconsciously brought it below my breast, snuggling it against my chest.
Slowly opening my hands after a short moment, a chirp escaped from its beak.
“I...”
Trying to say something, I guess, but it was too young to speak. Scratching under its wing with its beak, it looked at me.
“I... I... I... I'm saved! Thanks for being there for me, Ame! I thought I was going to die.”
Strange as it may be to hear a hatchling speak, it was a mythical being that could revive from death, born anew in the same world. She needed no introduction, not that I'm feeling the need to say who it is.
“You see... Calli and I were arguing, and then...”
That's where I'm omitting the rest of the information.
As you know, she went on and on about this person, and she didn't like people who can be reborn, evading death with the hatch of an egg. So they had an argument and the rest is history. For a detective such as myself, the past is crucial for learning future motives. But for this hatchling existence, it seemed like a tale that would never end. A mystery untangled since its inception.
As I walked home with the hatchling in hand, a thought occurred to me. Flushed, I'm realizing this fact. Though it shouldn't have, the more she talked about past events and how she'd ended up in her current situation.
In the distance, I saw her beaming down at me.
That gave me all the answers I needed. A smile crept on my face.
Hehehe.
