Memories

Well fuck her life.

Her personal assistant and friend, Yoo Yeri, was quiet all morning which should've been suspicious but Seulgi was to busy to noticed it. After she was done talking to misogynistic business men on zoom, Yeri entered her office very cautiously and gave her a letter.

"I'll leave you alone, but if you need anything, you know where I am." She offered her a sympathetic smile and left the office, leaving Seulgi confused at her words.

Not having the energy to analyze Yeri's behavior, Seulgi stretches her arms above her head, letting out a massive yawn and went to lay on her $9300 couch her client gifted her when she successfully closed their deal.

Thinking back, she remembered how Mr Choi was hard to please. He wanted to test everything to be perfect and she and her company were working day and night coming up with new ideas to please him. At the end when she was almost about to give up, he was finally happy with the result and Seulgi almost cried from happiness. He gifted her the couch, saying if she's going to work late in the future, she needs to rest comfortably in her office. Ofcourse in the beginning she was a bit disappointed with the gift but still grateful for it, but now she understands his words.

Seulgi closes her eyes and smiles at the thought of her finally sleeping, but then Yeri comes in.

"Are-are you okay?" She hesitantly asked and Seulgi is quite fed up with her being weird today.

"Yes why wouldn't I be? And why are you acting so weird?" Her sleep being ruined, Seulgi decides to get up and make her coffee.

"Haven't you read the letter?" At the coffee machine, Seulgi thinks about any letter she may have gotten, but nothing comes to mind.

"What letter?" She points to the coffee machine, silently asking if Yeri also want one, but she shakes her head.

"The letter I gave you this morning. It's really important." Yeri emphasizes the word 'important' while she lightly scratches the back of her hand to calm herself down.

Seeing Yeri being nervous, Seulgi walked over to her desk, looking for this supposed 'important' letter and finding it in a pile full of unopened company letters. Only the company's address is on it and she looks at Yeri with confusion.

"Read it." Yeri urges her and she find it strange that Yeri's nervous tics are coming back because of this letter. Deciding to ease this weird tension that has filled the room, Seulgi teases her.

"Aww, did you write your feelings for me in this letter? Is that the reason why you've been weird since this morning?" She gives Yeri her best flirtatious smile and winks at her.

"I'd rather fuck Bob the perv on the fifth floor than have any romantic feelings towards you."

Ouch.

"You really know how to bring down a woman's confidence." Seulgi says while taking a sip of her coffee. She sighed through her nose when the coffee hit the back of her throat, the bitter taste making her feel alive for a few seconds.

"Not women, only you." She just rolls her eyes at Yeri.

"But for real, if you need anything after reading the letter, just let me know." Scoffing at Yeri's dramatic antics, she opens the letter, and saw a wedding invitation.

When Seulgi took a good look at the invitation she nearly spat out her coffee.

Well fuck her life.

The letter falls out of a shocked Seulgi's hand and she quickly sat on her desk before her legs gives out under her. Yeri seeing all of this wanted to make sure she's okay, but decided against it, knowing Seulgi would want space right now.

Yoo fucking Jena

Seulgi has made sure she'd never see or hear from her, always avoiding the conversation whenever she's brought up by the dinner table, always glaring at Yeri bringing up her past with her. And it worked for six years, until now.

Yoo Jena.

That name leaves a bitter taste everytime she says it. It wasn't always like this, whenever she would utter her name, Seulgi's hearbeat would race and she would feel butterflies swarming in her stomach.

They first met at school when Jaeyi, Seulgi's academic rival, gave a speech at the beginning of the school year. She reluctantly waited for Jaeyi with her friends, wanting to be anywhere except for in Jaeyi's presence but since her friends are friends with Jaeyi, she can't escape her.

When Jaeyi finally came over, she brought a shy senior with her. She introduced her as her sister, Jena, and they all went to sit at the bench under the big tree at school. As usual, Seulgi and Jaeyi were subtly dissing each other while Yeri and Kyung kept the peace. Jena just stared the whole time at them with amusement. At the end of their break, Jena hesitantly asked Seulgi for her number, and she gave it.

She wish she hadn't given her number because it would've spared her the heartache.

After that, they frequently met up without the others and then finally after all the tension that has built up with the flirtatious smiles, leg touches and lip staring, they finally kissed.

When Jena told her to keep their relationship a secret, she didn't mind since she was also scared at coming out. But one night she suddenly felt courageous and came out to her parent's on family game night. At the end of her speech she was violently sobbing and both her parent's gave her a hug telling her they already knew.

"The hundreds of Suzy Bae posters in your room gave your lesbianism away."

They all laughed at that and Seulgi couldn't wait to tell Jena about her parents accepting her sexuality. The next day she told Jena and instead of feeling happy, she looked mortified. That should've been the first redflag.

Their relationship almost hit the one and a half year mark, and still Jena was afraid to come out, even to their close friends. But she knew that their friends already know about them, since they're not very subtle. Seulgi was always patient with her, knowing her family can be a little religious but she also felt like she's always the second option. Jena would always emphasize the word friend when introducing her, she would always slap away Seulgi's hand whenever Seulgi tried to initiate affection in public, but because Seulgi was madly inlove with her, she didn't mind the subtle rejected everytime.

When she told Jena about her leaving to study in America, they made plans that both of them would study there while living in a small apartment with a ginger cat.

Unfortunately Seulgi waited for four hours at the airport for her to show up, only to get a message from Jena saying she can't do it.

Ever since then, she has never uttered her name... Until now.

"Wh-what the fuck is this?" She whispers and look at Yeri with bewildered eyes.

"Yeri, what the fuck is this?" This time instead of whispering, she asks in a commanding tone that scares Yeri.

"Uhm.. It's a wedding invitation. For you. From.. Jena."

After the initial shocked, Seulgi gets up from her desk and saunter to Yeri like a predator towards a prey. She stops infront of Yeri's face and inhale deeply to calm herself down, before she unleashes her anger at her.

"Yeri-yah. Do you know who this invitation is from?" She tries to ask in a calm tone to not scare away Yeri, but it does the opposite.

"Well.. Yes." After answering, Yeri closes her eyes, too afraid of facing an enraged Seulgi. She hears Seulgi walking away and when she opened her eyes, she saw her at the liquor cabinet. Feeling obligated to not let Seulgi go down that road again, she walks towards her but Seulgi just stops her.

"You knew who send it, but you still gave it to me? Do you even care about me?" Seulgi's back is facing her, but they both can hear her voice cracking at the last question. Before she can answer, Seulgi beats her to it.

"Just go. Please. And tell everyone they can leave early."

Not wanting to disobey her boss, Yeri just nods and leave without saying anything.

Seulgi goes to stand at the window with the glass of whiskey she poured when Yeri left. She stares at the people fifty five floors below her and she notices a high school couple holding hands and giggling while they feed each other food.

That could've been her, once upon a time. She could've been with someone that wasn't afraid to tell anyone that she loves Seulgi. But she wasted her time with someone that constantly hid her, made her feel bad for loving her and someone that will never admit they like girls. She wishes she could get that time back.

Sighing, Seulgi stares at the drink in her hand, contemplating if she should drink or stay sober. Not wanting to deal with this whirlwind of emotions sober, Seulgi swallowed everything at once and took the bottle to drink straight from it.

----

"Seulgi-ah."

"Seulgi."

"Woo Seulgi!"

Seulgi jolted from the couch and sees a concerned Yeri looking at her. She blinks the sleep away and rubs her eyes.

"What are you doing here?" Seulgi asks while yawning. She stretches her arms above her head making noises and then she sighs.

"Are you serious!? You were the one basically cussing me out on the phone and then afterwards you cried, telling me to come fetch you at the office."

Seulgi tries to think about it, but nothing comes to mind. To be honest, her mind is still foggy and can't recall her calling Yeri. She doesn't even know how she ended up passes out on the office couch.

"What happened?" She asks a bit confused and almost tripped on the way to the fridge to fetch a bottle of water.

"After you told me to tell everyone to leave early, I tried to talk to you but you locked yourself in here."

Memories slowly invaded her mind from earlier that day.

Tiring zoom meeting.

Laying on the office couch.

Yeri acting weird.

Her opening the letter.

The wedding invitation.

Her drinking heavy for the first time in four years.

Fuck

Seulgi rubs her temples to calm her mind down. Even after six years, Jena still knows how to fuck up her life without even being in it.

Yeri searched for something in her bag, and after a few seconds, she gave Seulgi pain killers. She immediately took them and downed it with the water bottle in her hand.

"Thanks."

"No problem."

They sit in silence, listening to oddly calm ambience the city is providing and Seulgi can't help her mind racing with a hundred different scenarios.

"Yeri why did you give the letter if you knew it was from Jena?" Ever since she regained her memories, that question had been bugging her and she wanted an answer to it.

"Just know I didn't give it to you to hurt you even more, but someone is asking for a favour."

That's not the answer she was hoping to get.

"Wait. I don't understand what you're saying." Seulgi genuinely stares at Yeri with confused bambi eyes.

Sighing, Yeri takes a seat infront of Seulgi and took a puff of her airpop to calm her down. Seulgi just coughed and glared at her, knowing that Seulgi hated that stuff. Yeri just rolls her eyes and takes another puff, away from Seulgi.

"Can you stop smoking your cancer stick infront of me."

"No." To emphasize her answer, she blows a circle smoke cloud in Seulgi's face and laughs when Seulgi tried to fight it.

"Okay, okay. I'm done."

She just glares at Yeri.

"When I first saw the mail, I was hesitant to approach you about it, knowing about your... history with Jena."

Yeri carefully looked at her, awaiting the 'go' sign to tell her more. Seulgi just nodded.

"Well, I asked a close friend what to do and she suggested I should just tell you about it."

When Seulgi raised her eyebrow at the words 'close friend', Yeri gave her a sheepishly smile and avoided her eyes.

"So, are you going to tell me who this close friend is?" She questioned with finality and Yeri sighed, knowing she can't escape this question.

"Choi Kyung, our old school buddy. Do you still remember her?"

That name brought so much good memories back. She and Kyung were the mischievous girls in the group, always up to something no good. The teachers never believed that they were troublesome since Seulgi was top student, next to Jaeyi, and Kyung was, well Kyung the quiet nerd. They were good friend, she would even tell people they were best friends. But ever since the airport incident, Seulgi hasn't talked to her friends, because she blocked all of them on socials and changed her phone number. Yeri, who she wasn't really close too, were searching high and low for her until she found Seulgi passed out in a bar. She then forced her to keep contact and Seulgi is very grateful for that. She didn't want to reach out to the others, since they are people that still talking with Jena, and Yeri respected her choice.

"How is she doing?" She tried to feign nonchalance but miserably failed at it.

"You know, she misses you alot."

Avoiding eye contact, she just nods her head. Yeri just stares at her with pity knowing Kyung must've brought up good and bad memories. Clearing her throat, she continued their previous conversation.

"After suggesting I should tell you, she asked a favour."

"And what may that favour be?" She asked sceptically, not always trusting Yeri or Kyung for that matter when they ask favours.

"Well, you know, me and Kyung have been talking and you know-

"Yeri just get to the point." Seulgi gives an exasperated sigh and rubs her temples, not having the energy for Yeri to go around in circles with her explanation.

"We want you to be Jaeyi's fake girlfriend at the wedding."

After rambling out her answer, Yeri holds her breath, awaiting Seulgi's answer. To her surprise, Seulgi laughs. She looks at Yeri and laughs obnoxiously loud, holding her stomach with her left hand and wiping away a tear with her right hand.

"When I thought I've heard it all, here you come with this bullshit."

She still laughs, shaking her head as if she can't believe what Yeri just said. Seulgi then stands up from the couch and walks over to the fridge. Staring at her options, she avoids the alcohol, still suffering from a light headache, and takes a banana milk cart.

Taking her time basically slurping the banana milk, Seulgi thinks about the absurd question. Why would they need 𝘩𝘦𝘳 to be Jaeyi's girlfriend. She didn't even knew Jaeyi swinged that way. Doesn't Jaeyi hate her? Does she still hate Jaeyi? What the fuc-

"Can you please just say something?"

Yeri begged and for the first time Seulgi looked at her. She was pale and thin, very thin and dark circles were forming under her eyes. Seulgi knew this wasn't stress from work, since these days the employees gets a lot of off paid days. If they weren't in this predicament right now, Seulgi would've questioned her about her health.

"Why me? Why not you or Kyung?" Seulgi finally answers.

"This Byeong-Jin guy cheated on Jaeyi with Jena and Jena knew he was dating Jaeyi."

Seulgi scoffed, not knowing how to react to that bomb Yeri just dropped. She knew Jena was hearless, but to fuck your sister's boyfriend, that's something else.

"After that, Jaeyi cut off her sister until a month ago when her mother begged her to attend the wedding."

"And now she wants revenge?" Yeri nodded her head.

"And that's where you come in. She knows her parents will flip out of she comes to the wedding with a girlfriend and Jena would probably feel really uncomfortable with her sister dating you." Seulgi takes in everything that was said and just nods.

"I understand Jaeyi's pain-not the cheating, but the broken heart pain."

Yeri gives her a sympathetic smile, knowing she's referring to Jena that broke her heart. Seulgi then search for her phone on the desk, getting ready to go home and think of all of what just happened.

"So are you in?" Yeri hopefully asked.

"No. But I..I'll think about it." Grabbing her coat on the hanger, Seulgi walked last Yeri out of the office and in to the elevator and Yeri followed.

"That's good enough." Yeri smiled and presses the ground floor button on the elevator.

"Now take me home."

"Yes boss."
