Chapter 25

The Asset and his handler had taken out the snipers first, before he engaged with the ground forces. The Handler had shown him an image of the strike team's primary targets, and given him orders not to harm either of them.
The short brunet in the photo seemed familiar, but he couldn't access the memory, or not yet.
He remained out of sight.
When the 'Avengers' joined the fight, he waited. They had the advantages of numbers and greater power, and his Handler hadn't yet identified them as friendly or enemy.

He felt an unfamiliar urge to smile when the strike team's leader was smashed to the ground by a gauntleted fist. None of the HYDRA agents were faring well against the Enhanced fighters. Mission intel hadn't included any data about them, and they were woefully unprepared. Amateurs.

The Alpha tapped him on the shoulder. He half-turned to make eye contact.

"We're moving out into the open. Call out first that you want to surrender."

He hesitated, but complied after a second.

"Catrin!" yelled from both (primary target 1 and primary target 2) simultaneously.

He halted, confused, staring at Iron Man. Even muted by the armor, the scent of an unfamiliar male Alpha made him snarl under his breath.

"Easy. It's okay. " She edged closer, her body language protective. " He's my father. They won't touch you unless you invite them. "

Iron Man's armor retracted. The Asset raised both hands in a placating gesture, averting his eyes, as Stark swept his Handler into a fierce hug.

She hugged him back, but drew away a little after a moment. "Pa, this man was imprisoned at the same facility where I was. --No, Dad, I honestly don't believe it's a trick. He was being...cut apart, when I saw him. And screaming. He helped me get out, and he didn't pull his punches doing it."

An older Omega approached them, scrutinizing the Asset. "What's your name?"

"Asset designation is 'Winter Soldier'."

Bruce had taken a savage pleasure in seeing a battered and bleeding Rumlow hogtied by a very unintimidated Amazon, who had no more trouble dealing with the man than with a yapping Chihuahua puppy.

Unconscious or dead HYDRA fighters littered the clearing like broken dolls.

Then a man's voice called out from the treeline, in Russian, offering surrender. Damn good thing he and Tony both knew the language. He'd called back, stating agreement.

A tall, muscular man in combat gear emerged. Light flashed off his arm, which appeared to be an advanced prosthetic.

And just behind him... oh thank God...

Catrin hugged him and Tony, then reassured him that the blood on her clothes wasn't hers.

Bruce eyed her companion warily. Tony might not recognize the name, but he'd heard of the 'Winter Soldier' before, during past encounters with the League of Assassins. if this was the same man, grateful though Bruce was to have Cay back safely, they would have to be cautious.
