Hospital Bound

Dizziness. The beep of a monitor. Your head was pumping angrily inside your skull. You inched your eyes open, the bright light making your eyes squint and water. Thankfully, you recognized this place.

“Y/N….?” A voice came softly from behind a blue curtain. You went to sit up, but your hand hurt when you moved it. You realized you had an IV stabbed into your hand.

“Yes?” You answered.

Maru emerged from behind the curtain. She surveyed you for a moment, and then breathed a sigh of relief, her bright hazel eyes closing for a long pause. “I heard shuffling. Glad you’re awake. You sure gave us a scare.”

“What?” You asked, laying your head back flat on the pillow.

“Linus found you in the mines and carried you here. We had to do an emergency surgery on you.” Maru sighed, moving to come sit beside your bed on the plastic chair beside you.

“What happened?”

“Abdominal surgery. Lucky for you, Dr. Harvey is a genius. You won’t have any long term effects… but you’ll be bedridden for a week.” Maru explained. She crossed her legs carefully.

“My farm…” You started to say.

“It’s fine. We’ve already rounded up a few volunteers from town to care for your farm while you’re out. It’s an advantage of living here. People are nice in Pelican Town.”

You closed your eyes with relief, and fell back into a deep sleep before Maru could say anything else.

You awoke to the sound of a cart being wheeled beside you. Your eyes shot open, and you looked up to see Harvey. His back was to you, and he was mixing a couple of things.

“Harvey?” You called.

He turned around, his eyes wide with shock. “Oh! Sorry to disturb you.” He said, quickly putting down his medicine and turning to face you. “I was just mixing a couple more T3s for your IV. We had to do surgery…”

“Maru told me. I think. It’s hard to remember…” You said, your eyebrows scrunching.

“It’s okay. Don’t worry. Just rest for now. We’re taking good care of you…” He said, his eyes crinkling at you with affection. “Well, I’ll leave you to rest, then…” He moved to wheel the cart back out of your room, but you grabbed his arm before he could leave.

Your grip on him tightened. He froze. He turn around slightly, pink creeping at his cheeks. His eyes bore into yours.

“Harvey… Don’t go yet.” You said, your voice breaking on the last word.

“Don’t worry.” He said, moving his arm slowly to your forehead. “I won’t.” As he moved a piece of hair and tucked it behind your ear, you felt electricity shoot between the two of you.

Your body was still overwhelmed with fatigue and tiredness, so once Harvey had taken a seat next to you, you fell asleep quickly again. You slept peacefully knowing he was right there.

After another day of sleeping, you were feeling better. You finally checked your phone, and had tons and tons of new messages.

Jodi: How are you doing darling? Let me know if I can help in any way.

Sam: Heard what happened. I’m worried sick about you. Up for visitors?

Abby: BESTIE ARE YOU OKAY PLEASE MESSAGE ME

Elliot: I spent the last few days worrying about you. Please let me know when you’re able to that you are alright.

Shane: Crazy that you’re the one in the hospital this time. I’d swap myself out for you if I could. Let me know that you’re alive.

Sebastian: Please never go in the fucking mines again I’ve been losing my mind are you okay are you okay

Haley: Hey, I hope you’re alright….

Leah: Jesus Christ, Farmer. Please be alright! I can’t believe what happened.

There were even more messages than that, but your eyes were getting a little tired. You yawned, and replied to just one person.

Sam: Heard what happened. I’m worried sick about you. Up for visitors?

Y/N: I am now, if it’s just you.

Sam responded instantly.

Sam: Thank God!! See you in 5.

Sam was true to his word, arriving 5 minutes later. Maru brought him into your curtained off area, and you saw relief flood Sam’s eyes as he saw you laying in the bed, ultimately unharmed. Maru left quickly, leaving Sam to run his hands through his blonde hair nervously.

“Fuck. I’ve never seen such a cute patient.” He joked, trying to mask his nervousess.

“You lie.” You smiled.

“Are you okay? I mean, seriously.” He said, pulling up the plastic chair to sit at your side.

“Fine. Just embarrassed.”

Sam sighed. “Don’t be embarrassed. I’m going to kill Marlon for putting those ideas about the mines in your head. Locals are taught to stay away for a reason.”

You shook your head. “I like the mines.”

“And I like weed but I don’t smoke it every single day.” Sam spat. “You need some time away from the mines. Look at you.”

“You said I looked cute.” You argued.

Sam sighed again. “I’m not here to argue. I’m genuinely just so worried about you, and seeing you here alive feels like a miracle.” He said. You smiled and nodded. You made eye contact with Sam, and he looked away quickly. “We’ve been taking care of your field. No need to worry.”

“We?” You asked.

“Me, Mom, Caroline, Marnie, Shane, and Gus.” Sam said. “Your crops have never looked better if I say so myself.”

You laughed. “I doubt that.”

Sam smiled and looked at the ceiling. He scrunched his features. “Don’t know the last time I was here.”

“Check-ups?” You asked.

“Nah.” He shook his head. “Probably when my dad got back from Gotoro. The second time.” He clarified. You had heard of Gotoro. A wild, wartorn country. “Prisoner of war. Happened not once, but twice. Don’t know why he went back.”

You didn’t know what to say, so you sat and nodded.

“Sorry, enough about me. You’re the star today.” Sam smiled. “You hungry? I could bring you some icecream.”

“I’d never say no to icecream.” You giggled.

Sam left to go get icecream for the two of you, but as he walked away you couldn’t help but wondering about his father. How long had his father been gone? He must miss him. Even if he did, Sam was always upbeat and bubbly. You’d never seen him show a ton of emotion. Was he holding it all deep down?

Questions swam in your brain until Sam came back with Ben and Jerry’s.
