The Surprise Guest

“Y/N, can we talk?” Sebastian called through your door. You looked at Sam, who looked back at you in distress.

You had obviously changed your outfit from the last time you saw Sebastian, earlier today at the flower festival. If he saw Sam here he could probably guess what was going on. Sam’s face was still pink, and he was wearing the proudest grin. No way would Sam be able to hide what had just happened between you two.

A few more moments ticked by. Sebastian pounded on the door again. “Come on, Y/N. I know you’re home.”

You were frozen. Unable to move. Your body was forcing your arms to your side, and your eyes stuck at the door, waiting for him to knock again.

“Do you want me to do something?” Sam whispered.

“Come on, seriously!” Sebastian pounded again, making you snap into action.

“Go to my bedroom. Close the door.” You hissed at Sam.

He obeyed, quickly locking himself in your bedroom. You sighed deeply, threw the two wine glasses into the sink, and prepared yourself to open the door.

“Just a minute!” You said, tying your hair back and then brushing off your pajamas. You exhaled in front of the door and shook out your hands, mentally preparing to answer.

Finally, you swung open the door. Sebastian’s dark hair blew against the night wind, brushing his face gently. He shook his head, getting the hair out of his face.

“What do you want?” You asked.

“I just…” He said, sighing and looking at the ground. It seemed like he had lost all his nerve while he was pounding on the door.

“Yes?” You prodded.

“It’s hard to see you with anyone else.” He admitted. This was a level of vulnerability you hadn’t yet seen from Sebastian.

“That’s why you threw a tantrum at the flower dance?”

“Well… I wouldn’t call it a ‘tantrum’, but if that’s what we’re calling it then sure.” Sebastian admitted. “Can I come in?”

“No.” You said quickly.

“Oh.” Sebastian said, his brow furrowing. “Why not?”

You could see the suspicion rising on his face. “I’m in the middle of something.” You said.

“Of what?”

“None of your business.” You said, stepping outside and shutting the door behind you.

“Y/N, is someone here?” Sebastian asked, his voice unwaveringly serious. He peered in through the window on the door, and you stepped in front of it.

“Even if someone was over, it’s none of your business.”

“Ouch. Okay, I guess I deserved that one.” He sighed. “But really, tell me, is someone here?” His eyes were pleading.

You looked into his eyes, which were deep with concern and regret. It took you aback, just how serious he was treating this situation. You looked at the ground and shuffled your feet. “Maybe.”

“Fuck.” He sighed, rubbing his forehead. “You move fast, don’t you?” He snapped.

“You have no right to talk to me like that.” You said.

“Fine. Who is it?” He hissed. His pale face was starting to flush with bright red anger.

You knew this conversation was headed to a bad place, so without saying a word, you stepped back inside, shut the door behind you, and locked it. Maybe that was too harsh, you thought, but you had already done it.

You sat on your couch, sinking into the soft fabric, wanting it to swallow you up. You turned to look out the front window and saw Sebastian walking down the illuminated path, away from you. At least that’s over with.

“Y/N, is he gone?” Sam called from inside your bedroom.

“Yeah, he’s gone.” You sighed.

Sam stepped out, looking sheepish. “Man, I’m sorry about him. He can be such a dick.”

“It’s fine. You want to watch something?” You asked, clicking on the TV with your remote. You wanted an easy distraction, and not to discuss anything further.

Sam, completely falling for the bait, immediately dropped the topic and turned his attention to the TV. “Aw man, have you ever seen Stein’s Gate? It’s my favorite anime of all time.” He said excitedly, taking the remote from you and scrolling through the show options.

You snuggled into him, watching his pick of show, and let your mind slowly drift away.

You rubbed your eyelids. Why am I on the couch? You wondered. You lifted your head and realized it was on someone. Sunlight was drifting in through the windows. Oh, shit.

You shot up. “Sam, wake up!” You snapped.

Sam’s eyes flew open. “What?” He asked in a sleepy daze, before noticing the sunlight. “Shit, shit… My mom’s going to kill me.” He said, trying to unwrinkle his dress clothes. “And I’m still in the same clothes from yesterday… Shit!”

You stood in fear as Sam paced. You knew how his mom liked to gossip. You knew everyone would be awake by now. The clock told you it was 9am. Everyone would see Sam doing a ‘walk of shame’ from your house.

“Shit… Um, maybe I have some men’s clothes. Could you say you slept over at a friend's house? Maybe Abby’s?”

“I could… Wait, maybe Abby is still in bed. If she can run here without anyone seeing her, we could say we both slept over. That’s not suspicious.” Sam said. He picked up his phone and called her. “Abby, help.” He said as soon as she picked up. “Did your parents see you last night? No?”

Over the phone, Abby agreed to come over so Sam would have someone to walk to town with, being much less conspicuous than walking on his own.

You both waited for an out of breath Abby that appeared on your doorstep half an hour later. In the meantime, Sam changed into the men’s baggy shirt and sweats you had. He said he had just been shopping, so it wouldn’t be suspicious if he was wearing new clothes.

“You guys fucked up falling asleep, huh?” Abby asked, a wide grin on her face.

“Shut up, Abby. But, thanks.” Sam sighed.

“So… Did anything happen last night?” She asked, twirling a purple strand of hair around her finger.

“Jesus, Abby.” Sam rolled his eyes.

“What? As your day-saver I think I have a right to know.” She smirked.

Sam looked at you. You just shrugged.

“Fine. Kind of…” He said. His face grew red. You remembered how passionately he performed, and you started to blush, too.

“Cute.” Abby said flatly. “Okay, are we ready to head to town?”

“Yeah. Um… I’ll see you later, Y/N.” Sam said.

“See you.” You said meekly.

You watched Abby and Sam head to town together, and you felt eternally grateful for having a friend like Abby.

You put on work clothes, tied your hair up, and quickly got to work in the field. You had crops that badly needed tending to, especially because today was hot. As you were watering a big section of parsnips, you felt your phone vibrate in your pocket.

Abby was calling. You answered so quickly you almost dropped your phone. “Hello? How’d it go?”

“Not suspicious in the slightest. You owe me, big time.” She said. You could hear her gloating smile through the phone speaker.

“I do.” You agreed. “Thank you.”

“Though, I have to say, I’m a little jealous.”

Her saying that gave you pause. You remembered the one passionate kiss you two had shared. But, she had informed you she wasn’t ready to go further.

“You are?” You asked.

“I am… You know, I think I’m ready to try things out with a woman. And…” She continued, her voice shaking a little, “You are a really safe person. So, if you’re willing…”

“I’m going to stop you there.” You said.

“Oh.” Abby’s voice fell.

“Abby, would you like to go on a date with me?”

“Oh.” She said, sounding stunned. “Y-Yes.”
