Chapter 8

Bora had barely walked through the office when she saw people in the little seated waiting area. She didn’t give them a second glance since the receptionist was clearly taking care of everything.

“Bboya… problem,” Minji immediately pulled the smaller woman into her office, shutting the door behind them.

“I just got back from court. I would like to set these files down.” Bora glared at the woman, watching her immediately take the files from her arms and place them on her desk. “What?” She frowned.

“Police are here.” Minji quickly stated. “Looking for the Miss Kim that married Miss Han.” She frowned.

“Oh shit…” Bora frowned. “Just fucking great. The one time I promised to be home on time.” She grumbled.

“Well you better cancel those plans… they want to bring us in for questioning…” Minji sighed. “Of all the law firms, this one. This one is the one they question.” She muttered.

“I represent Yubin’s dad… that’s why.” Bora let out a groan before pulling her cellphone out. “Move.” She moved quickly behind the desk, grabbing the desk phone before dialing the familiar number.

“Hello?” Dong’s voice was heard.

“Was expecting Sing.” Bora quickly whispered.

“She’s in a session… Why are you calling her number when you know this?” Dong frowned.

“Listen, whoever this is… can you tell Sing that I’ll be late coming to pick her up? A thing came up at work with Minji. She’ll know Minji. My wife. That I’ll try and get her home as soon as possible?” Bora frowned.

It was silent for a few moments, Bora could only hope that Dong got the message.

“Got it. I’ll let her know you can’t pick her up and to make other arrangements.”

“Thank you.” Bora ended the call, looking at Minji. “Well let’s sell this.” She muttered.

“For good luck,” Minji walked over and pressed her lips against Bora’s, feeling the tension. “Just remember what we used to have and it’ll pass.”

“How could I forget?” Bora smirked before grabbing the older woman’s ass.

“We’re at work. Remember that much.” Minji chuckled. “Now go back to your office.”

Bora got herself back together, grabbing the files and stepped out of the office. Only to be met with the receptionist.

“Oh, Bora, you have visitors… I thought you would be in your office…”

“No, sorry. Had to tell Minji about the case I covered this morning. Walk with me.” Bora nodded her head toward her office and the receptionist walked with her. “Who is visiting me?”

“Detectives… Do you want a conference room or your office?” She asked.

“My office, but give me like five minutes? To at least set my things down?” Bora frowned.

“Of course.”

Bora smiled as she walked into her office, quickly setting the files on one of the chairs and she quickly moved a few things and made the picture of her and Minji visible enough. She knew Minji had many photos of them together in her office, since she kept her real life hidden as well.

“Okay… You got this…” Bora whispered to herself before taking a few files and placing them where they needed to be in her office.

“Bad time?” One of the detectives asked her.

“Not at all. Just got back from court and need to put things where I’ll find them.” Bora moved the extra files, making sure to grab the giant redwell and place it on her desk so she could keep track of the one case she really cared about. “So what can I do for you both?” She asked.

“You’re the Kim? Married to Han Dong?” One of the detectives asked.

“No… Sorry…” Bora frowned. “I’m married to Minji…” Bora shook her head, looking at both of them.

“Minji?” The other detective asked.

“Kim Minji, partner.” Bora pointed across the hall, watching the detectives turn to see the opened office at the other end of the hall.

Minji sat at her desk, aimlessly typing away. She wasn’t faking either since Bora was copied on the emails and saw the responses to various clients.

“Ah… So you… an associate married a partner… not at all skeptical.” The detective chuckled.

“She was an associate when we got married. She made partner last year.” Bora corrected. “And before you ask, we’ve been married for five years.”

“Got it… got it…” The detective muttered. “So you wouldn’t know anything about Miss Han Dong?” He asked.

“No… I’ve never heard of her.”

“Well, you're representing one of her notorious hit men. For murder no less.” He laughed.

“Detective… you and I both know the law through and through… who I represent comes with a matter of confidentiality. You can’t ask about my clients.” Bora sighed.

“So if we came back with a warrant.”

“My word still says. My client would have complete transparency. But if you’d like. Come back with a warrant. But I will say… don’t waste your time when everything is public record anyway.” Bora whispered.

“Your bluffing…” he scoffed.

“Way of the future. Everything is digital. Why keep it under lock and key. Go on. I’m sure your chief would love to hear how you haven’t kept up with the times.” Bora smiled.

“And I bet your boss would love to hear about how you’re screwing your way to the top.”

“Have fun proving that when my department is criminal litigation and Minji’s is family intervention.” Bora raised an eyebrow at them, watching them struggle.

Bora turned to her computer, sending an email to Minji to attempt to save her from this whole nonsense.

Minji couldn’t help but sigh at the message, seeing the all too familiar emoji on her screen. She quickly dialed her secretary, giving her simple instructions to bother Bora.

She watched as Bora’s phone started ringing, allowing the deceives to excuse themselves. But their little plan backfired since The older could see them coming to her office from the corner of her eye.

“Mrs. Kim, do you have a moment to speak?” The lead detective smiled.

“Quite literally a moment. I’m waiting to be let in for this conference.” Minji gestured to her screen, showing the meeting pending.

“Oh, well we just wanted to confirm some details from your wife… You’ve been married for how long?” He asked.

“Five years.” Minji answered.

“Now… I am curious… How are you a family intervention attorney… When your wife defends murderers?” The other detective frowned. “Isn’t that quite a conflict?” He frowned.

“Look I don’t know what angle either of you are trying to get at… But if money is good then money is good. Our moral compass is a little ambiguous when it comes to being an attorney. I’ve represented people who have clearly abused their spouses and children and hated every minute of it… doesn’t make us horrible people. Just makes us… have a terrible taste.” She explained before hearing the confirmation ding and a judge’s voice speaking. “If you’ll excuse me…” Minji muttered before standing up from her desk. “I have a father to keep in jail.” She whispered before shutting her office door.

Bora stayed on the phone, talking absolute nonsense to Minji’s secretary while she watched the detectives leave the office entirely.

“You’re the best Hyeju. Listen. I owe you lunch. But I have to go.” Bora quickly ended the call, grabbing her file before sneaking into Minji’s office.

“Your honor, that isn’t fair!” Minji groaned.

“Mrs. Kim, it is the law!”

“Well the law is a little vague here if I remember correctly.” She glared. “I’m just asking for his probation officer to really think. If he leaves prison he’s going to go back to his ex wife and beat on their children again!” She shouted.

Bora frowned at her, while setting the giant file down on the extra chair before peeking at who the judge was.

“Oh he’s a bitch.” She mouthed when Minji looked at her. She watched as Minji silently agreed, listening to the opposing argument.

“What do you want?” Minji asked when she muted her mic.

“Can I leave this here? My door lock is still broken.” Bora pointed at the giant red well, watching Minji nod her head.

“Counselor, do you agree with that statement?”

“Absolutely not your honor. He’s asking for the warrants to be waived!” Minji frowned while Bora escaped the office.

Bora hated the fact that almost everyone in the firm knew this lie but how could they just come out and say they were associated with the country’s biggest mafia? That Yubin’s father just so happened to know this firm and requested Bora specifically from a friend?

She went back to her office, collecting her things before throwing her bag over her shoulder and texted Dong that she would be home within the hour.

She couldn’t mess up again.
