Friends? Friends.
April layed on her back, on her bed, staring up at the ceiling of her dark room. The rain lightly tapped on her roof, dripping down onto her window. April glanced at her clock. 9:06. Leona was supposed to be back from her weekly music class an hour ago. But she hadn’t called April yet, to show her the new song she started, to help each other with homework, any of that.
April didn’t know why she felt like this. April didn’t know why she got nervous whenever she was around Lea. Lea was just so.. Perfect. They’d been friends for years. Never as close as they were this year. And, coincidentally, this year was when April started to get nervous when she was around Lea. When she would pick at her nails before her and Lea’s hangout sessions. When her face would get red seeing Lea across the hallway.
April sighed again, then opened up her phone.

The redhead stared at the screen for a few seconds. No response from her boyfriend. April opened her messages to Lea. She smiled as she reread old texts and laughed as she reopened old pictures.
She breathed in, and breathed out. “Ugh,” She scoffed. Glancing around her room, she saw the slight mess in it. April got up and gingerly picked up the few clothes littered on the floor. Her cross-country t-shirt, a pair of flared leggings. April even found an old necklace she’d been missing for months.
When she finished, April looked around her room again. Her eyes landed on one of her favorite books. It always cheered her up when April used to read more often. April grabbed it off her dresser, and opened it up to the first page. She still liked the writing style. The auburnette spent the rest of the night reading, without a call from Lea and without a response from Casey. Eventually, April fell asleep. The book open on her chest, she fell asleep, thinking about the misadventures of the characters.
Beep!
April’s eyes burst open. Just a notification, she thought, picking up and unlocking her phone.

April hit the facetime button, and it rang for a second.
“Hey, April,” Casey accepted the call. “Hey Case.” She said blandly to her boyfriend, who shifted in his seat. “Can I say something to you? It’s serious..” The dark-haired boy slightly trailed off. April rolled her eyes, assuming he was faking the dramatics. He’s probably gonna yell horse shit or something, She thought.
Instead, Casey Jones sighed. “April.” He said. The girl nodded. “You know I love you?” He asked. April’s face went white. They were going to break up. Her mouth fell slightly open at the realization. “..Yea- Yeah, I do,” April stuttered a bit.
Her soon-to-not-be-boyfriend sighed. “April, I.. I-”
“I want to break up.” April interrupted him. “I know you were about to say it.” Casey looked at her, shocked, “I.. I just, April, I wanted to say I think I’m bi,” The boy paused, “Like, I think I like guys, too.” He finished. April’s eyes widened. “..oh,” She barely managed to say. “But. Uh. If you want to, I guess if you want to,,” Casey said. April thought for a minute. About Lea.
Breathing in slowly, “Yes.” The auburnette said. Tears refused to fall from April’s eyes, she didn’t even know if she wanted to break up with Casey. He blinked. “Okay.. Friends? Still?” The boy choked out. April looked at Casey, though the screen, “Yeah. Friends.” She said. Casey hung up.
Barely breathing, April started full-on crying. She opened up her messages to Lea.

“April??” Leona yelled as she ran into the girl’s room. She was clearly dressed for bed; in a baggy band t-shirt and pajama pants falling over her light blue plastic flip-flops, and her braids unstyled and flying everywhere– probably about to sleep before April texted her.
She glanced around the room, eyes landing on April, who had her knees to her chest, sobbing into them. Lea kicked off her flip-flops and ran over to her friend, wrapping her arms around her. “April, lord, why’d he break up with you?” She hugged April tightly.
April brought her head from her knees, trying to avoid the other’s eyes. “..I broke up with him, Lea.” She was barely audible. Lea’s eyes widened, “Oh my god, why? What did he do?” She asked. April sniffled, “He.. he came out to me, as bi, but I thought he was trying to break up with me, so.. So I tried to do it first and interrupted him,” She said.
Leona stared at her for a moment. “Oh.. oh, April… Did you tell him? That you're bi?” April shook her head. “I was going to. But I didn’t tell him I was, too, for some reason,” The redhead paused. “..I dunno.” She let go of her knees, and hugged Lea back. April’s face heated up, and she was thankful that Leona couldn’t see her pinkish face.
Eventually, the pair peeled away from each other, but April still laid on Lea. “Hey, Apricot, I can stay the night, you wanna watch movies?” Lea asked. April nodded sluggishly, “Don’t call me that.” She said. Leona giggled, “Sure, whaddya wanna watch, Apri?” She grabbed the other’s laptop. April shrugged, grabbed the laptop from her friend, and signed in, then handed it back. “Choose a movie.” April’s words slurred together.
Lea grinned, “Yes, we should totally watch Mean Girls!” April hummed a response as Lea started the movie. She put her arms around April’s waist and pulled her closer. The redhead blushed immensely, but Lea was the perfect pillow, and April was so tired.. She couldn't help falling asleep in her arms. Before she dozed off, Lea kissed her on the forehead, jolting her awake.
“L-lea?” The auburnette mumbled. Leona hummed in acknowledgement, “Sorry, for like, invading your space, Apri..” Lea trailed off. “No! No, it was nice, uh, fine!” April stuttered, turned around, practically on Lea’s lap. She noticed the other’s red face.
They sat in silence for a moment, “..Can I kiss you, again? April?” Lea stuttered out. April nodded shallowly.
Leona gingerly held April’s head in her hands, staring into her eyes. Neither of them really knew what to do. April scooted closer to the other, and their noses brushing against each others. The redhead fell onto Lea, kissing her softly.
It was only a few seconds long, the kiss, but it still made April’s face heat up, and she immediately hid her face in her hands. “Oh my goodness..” The redhead mumbled a few times. Lea smiled, her face red too, and pulled April next to her.
“Uh.. April?” The redhead looked up at Lea. “Yeah?” Leona swallowed, “Will you be my girlfriend?” She asked. April whipped her head to Lea in disbelief, “R-really?” The girl sputtered. The other nodded. April hugged Leona tightly, “Yes!” She exclaimed. There was a scream from the laptop, ruining the moment.
The pair glanced at Regina George getting hit by a bus, then back to each other, and burst out into laughter. “You wanna watch something else,” April paused, “..Babe?” Lea grinned. “Yeah, sure,” She said, engulfing her girlfriend in a hug. Said girlfriend laughed and hugged Leona back.
