Staring at her reflection in the mirror, Ena adjusted her golden earrings adorned with real rubies. The red contrasted her hair really well, Airi had always told her. That’s why the dress she was wearing tonight had the same, deep red tone as the tint on her lips did.
Ena stepped out of the bathroom, but not before spraying more perfume around her neck.
A servant was already waiting to escort her to the dining table. Ena went with him without a complaint.
As he led her into the banquet hall, Ena viewed the chandelier reflecting her own red image back at her. She smiled.
“Madam,” the servant called and pulled out a chair at the foot of the table. Ena tore her eyes off of the chandelier and moved over to take her seat.
As soon as she did, the double doors across the room opened. In stepped Airi, beautiful as ever, her pearly white suit emphasizing her curves in a way that caused Ena to barely be able to take her eyes off her.
Airi met her eyes. She sat across from Ena, at her usual seat.
“You’re wearing the earrings I bought you last week,” Airi noticed, a statement rather than a question. “You know I always tell you that red is your color.”
Ena nodded, her eyes still caught in the spell that is Airi’s. “Yes, I remember.”
Their conversation was interrupted as a servant rolled in a serving trolley filled with various dishes. She put them onto the table. It looked delicious.
The servant handed Ena a glass of blood red wine. She held it up to her nose and enjoyed the smell of the fine selection.
“Let’s drink to you,” Airi suggested and held up her glass. “To my wonderful wife.”
Ena followed her motion.
“Cheers!,” the pink-haired woman declared.
She took a sip. Oh, she thought as she tasted an unfamiliar bitterness. I guess that’s it.
In a hectic act of short-tempered panic, Ena tore her head up to look at her wife.
Airi stared into her with her pink eyes. She smiled a genuine smile.
Ena relaxed. Smiled back.
The taste of poison stained her mouth, swelled her tongue. It was getting harder and harder to breathe. But that’s fine. Ena let the poison do its work on her.
“Cheers.”
