Chapter 3
Wednesday and Enid made their way to the main courtyard where parents had gathered.
Wednesday spotted her family immediately, they were pretty hard to miss, even amongst a bunch of outcasts and their families, Morticia, Gomez, and Pugsley definitely stood out.
“I can see my mother and father from here, would you care to join me” Wednesday gestured with her head toward where her parents stood, after a moment The Addams’ had also spotted her and Enid, Pugsley started waving enthusiastically, Morticia and Gomez sharing a tame but excited glance at each other and then toward Wednesday and Enid.
“Sure, I don't see my family yet” Enid glanced around confused as she spoke. She wasn't exactly looking forward to seeing her parents, but it was strange they weren't here as soon as possible to find a way to berate Enid.
Wednesday nodded in acknowledgment, and moved to where her parents stood Enid trailing behind “Mother, Father, Pugsley” She paused after her greeting “Terrible to see you all as usual” Puglsey moved forward and wrapped himself around Wednesday's lower body. Wednesday stood unmoving “Unhand me Puglsey or you won't see tomorrow” Pugsley wordlessly let go and grinned at his sister “Good to see you too”
Morticia air kissed Wednesday's cheeks “Wednesday you look dreadful” She smiled warmly “And who might this be?” She paused as she onced over Enid “Enid Sinclair” Enid stepped forward and raised her hand to shake Morticias but was surprised when her hand was pushed down and she was enveloped in a warm embrace. “My dear, we, Gomez, and I are incredibly grateful for what you have done for Wednesday” Enid reacted immediately and wrapped her arms around Moticia. This was nice she thought to herself, warm, it felt like a hug that was grateful. Sincere.
They pulled back from their hug only for Enid to be brought into another by Gomez and then Pugsley. Wednesday watched the interactions silently, a slight swelling in her chest that was uncomfortable, but didnt hate, and she couldn't quite place. Enid spoke up “It’s no problem.” Enid smiled “I did what any good roommate would do”
Gomez grinned “You did, sweet wolf” Gomez clapped his hands together happily “Thing filled us in on all the details, but we’d love to hear the gritty details from the wolf themself” Wednesday made a sound of realization, “That is where thing has been” At this thing scuttled out from behind Pugsley and waved.
Just as the conversation was to continue, to no doubt praise Enid, the family was approached by none other than Enid's mother, her dad trailing behind timidly. Enid immediately faltered, Wednesday moved toward the blonde girl standing ever so slightly in front of her. “Enid!” Esther sounded exasperated as though she had been doing anything other than standing around. “Your father and I were talking with the Nevermore wolves, I expected you to join us but I find you here” She glanced around at the company of the Addams, “with… whoever these people are” She grimaced, not even attempting to hide it. She walked toward Enid in an attempt to drag her away but was stopped in her tracks when Wednesday stepped forward again, blocking her path to Enid. Enid ducked her head and lightly touched Wednesday's arm in appreciation. Wednesday didnt move out of her touch, she lightly pushed back attempting to communicate with Enid that she had this.
Morticia spoke before Wednesday or Enid could respond. She was polite and calm despite knowing who this was and her behaviour toward the blonde wolf. Morticia reached out her hand to shake Esther’s “We are the Addams Family, your Enid wolfed out and saved our tortuous Wednesday, we are oh so grateful to her” Morticia's other hand reached out to Gomez lovingly, Gomez connected his hand with his wife and also spoke up “Yes, she is truly one of a kind, a special young wolf” He looked over to Wednesday and Enid a knowing look in his eye at the light contact they were sharing.
Esther glanced at the outstretched hand and begrudgingly returned the handshake though responded as if she were in a hurry “ Yes I’ve heard of you I am Esther, and this is Murray, my husband” Esther again moved toward Enid to pull her away to discuss.. said recent happenings, however, Wednesday once again blocked her path, stepping forward disconnecting Enid’s touch from her. Wednesday opened her mouth to speak to no doubt voice some very kind words she had toward Enid's mother the very source of her friend's insecurities. Before Wednesday had the chance she was interrupted by Morticia “Well we were just going to recount the school year events, How about we all sit together, Enid and Wednesday are close so let us make an effort” Morticia then moved to sit down on the bench beside them and gestured for Esther and Murray to do the same.
Enid spoke up before anyone could shut the idea down “That sounds great Mrs Addams!” She beamed in what she hoped didnt look as anxious as she felt. Esther huffed and regrettably sat down across from Enid who was practically glued to Wednesday's side. As the families conversed, well Gomez, Morticia, and Pugsley spoke, the Sinclairs offered a hum of engagement occasionally Enid chewed on her bottom lip and bounced her leg nervously. Wednesday had tuned out the conversation and completely into Enid. She glanced at the form of the blonde and felt another pang of that uncomfortable but not hated feeling in her chest at the reactions that Enid’s own mother caused. Wednesday let out a very silent puff of air and placed her hand on Enid's knee in comfort. Enid's leg stopped bouncing, and she immediately reached her own hand down to meet Wednesdays, she intertwined their fingers and squeezed.
Now if this wasn't the situation that it was then Enid would be freaking out right now. She and Wednesday were holding hands, and Wednesday had pretty much initiated the contact. But this in fact was the situation and she was on edge and sitting in front of her mother so she wasn't about to start thinking about her crush right now, she would freak out later in private or maybe with Yoko whichever.
Esther turned her attention back to Enid, growing tired of the pleasantries between her and the Addams’ and apparently Thing, though she had no idea what the hand was trying to communicate with her. Luckily she didn’t Thing was saying all sorts of colourful language and Pugsley was the only one picking up on it. “So have you found a mate yet” She questioned her daughter almost wholly cutting off Gomez.
“Uh well you know I have been a little busy recently, and the wolf out was only yesterday” Enid replied nervously she knew this would come up. She squeezed Wednesday hand in attempt to find some comfort.
“Well I imagine it will be even harder now with those gashes across your face, I do hope they’ll heal up soon or you'll never find anyone, let alone a respectable young male wolf” Enid looked down embarrassedly and touched her eyebrow where the most significant cut resided, her other other hand yet again tightening its grip on Wednesday to where she lost the blood flow. Wednesday quite enjoyed the sensation.
“The scars will be a reminder of the great strength and bravery demonstrated by Enid, if anything they will greatly improve her chances of finding a mate, they’re quite beautiful,” Wednesday spoke stoically. Enid turned her head to Wednesday her eyes wide as a red blush crept up her neck, had she really just said that to her mother?
Esther stood up she was not able to be polite anymore if that's what you would call the behaviour anyway “Enid, come, I need to speak with you alone” Enid moved to stand up, she was not about to disobey her mother not when that deep scowl was set. Wednesday moved as Enid did, Enid dropped their conjoined hands begrudgingly and placed it higher up her arm instead in reassurance “It’s okay Weds, I can handle it, I’ll be back” Wednesday didnt look convinced “Promise” Enid squeezed her lightly and moved to follow her mother away from the table. Wednesday allowed her to go, Enid knew where she was if anything arose and they would be in sight the whole time, that's what she told herself anyway.
Wednesday watched Enid and her mother converse, Enid stood head hung low nodding at whatever her mother said ever so often. Wednesday began clenching and unclenching her fist unconsciously. She was frustrated, an emotion that she didnt often come across.
“Wednesday our dear stormcloud” Gomez cooed at the goth. “Enid will always have a home with us, not to worry.” Wednesday nodded gratefully.
“I am aware that the school will be taking a break, following the circumstances, it is not unwise.” She was still watching Enid and her mother closely “I will ask Enid to stay with us. She not need to endure her mother more than she has to”
“Of course, we are more than happy to house a werewolf, how thrilling” Morticia was excited at the prospect, and Pugsley eagerly nodded along
“Excellent, I will inform her at once, She does not require any more of an interrogation from her mother” Wednesday moved to stand up and toward Enid.
Enid sensed the movement before the raven had come close. She turned her head toward the goth and smiled a little. Despite everything, she would listen to whatever degrading words Esther had for her as long as she had the presence of the stoic girl silently approaching her.
