Gods Be Damned

The first time Eddie and Venom tried to procreate; it nearly made them never try again.

They wanted to combine the beauty of both their parts in the cycle, both of them fully aware of the ugly (Venom of decay and Eddie thought of himself). With that in their minds, hearts, and every intention- Carnage was oh so beautiful. A happy child.

Then, when they were old enough to see humans as they were, Carnage was angry. They began crying and screaming, throwing what Venom would deem tantrums.

Carnage went about attacking and starting wars and never truly told their parents why. Eddie felt so guilty, and Venom could barely console him. It was too much of a change, too fast. Eventually, enough was enough and there had to be a stopping point. The day the two prepared to confront their child, they heard Earth wail Carnage's real name. Ares. The worst part of it all is that Carnage once chose to sit back and see what would happen. When they did, war had been permanently ingrained into humanity's being. They started fights over trivial things such as spouses and misunderstandings, greed and desperation being the driving points behind it all. After that, it did not take long for Carnage to find the perfect man to do their bidding.

A few centuries in, a man named Cletus Kasady captured their attention by killing in their name, making sacrifices at the temples in which so many prayed for the wars to stop. He was their champion. Pleased, Carnage sewed their souls together and gave him the gifts of a true god. Cletus, thankful, went on to spill blood in different names throughout history- Cain, Ramses, Brutus, Genghis, Jack- and brought bodies to their temples every night. As much as he was devoted, Kasady cared for Carnage. Venom and Eddie had tried time and time again to simply speak with their child but Carnage would not listen. They left their anger behind in favor of this exciting lust. So much blood continued to spill, and the Earth had enough.

It was horrific.

Spring withered. He fell to his knees and truly wept for the first time. It was cold for so long that humans believed that they would die like this. Cold, hungry, and slaughtered alongside many. He didn't mean for it to be this way. No matter how many times Venom tried to tell him it wasn't, Eddie would find ways so that it was. He tried to make it so food would grow but the little that did was taken by the greedy and sold to the highest bidder. Eddie went to make it spring and summer so people could at least be warm but something was off. He was not doing it for the joy of it. With Spring full of misery, nothing would go right. It instead got colder.

Even Danny was confused.

So, Venom did what had to be done to protect their husband. Hades stripped Cletus of the very powers given to him by his lover and shredded their souls apart. The man, now once again mortal, fell extremely ill. He became an empty husk of the monster he was and the victims of his crimes came upon him with weapons of vengeance. Ares swore they would never forgive their parents, that humans will never be able to reach redemption and their undeserving get what they truly deserved.

At first, Eddie and Venom did not understand the words but quickly found out their child's meaning. Plagues and death rain in ways it never has before. Natural plants and animals consumed carriers of sickness and no herbs or medicine could cure them. Children decay before their mothers’ very eyes. Wars grow as the men lose their will to live as they have nothing to live for after their families have been stolen away by the malevolent forces. They blame Spring for the sickness, they curse Death for coming too early. Venom watched the weeping souls cross, all afraid of their fate and some so unwilling that they will not come to the God to their afterlife (despite how good it was) believing they will be sent back and restart their suffering all over again.

Eddie found it in himself to push it all down and refocus on his job. He is Spring- Persephone. He makes flowers grow, rivers rush, and the world green. If the people are cold, they know how to make firewood and blankets. If they lack food, they know berries and animals exist in the forests. He will do his job and if they do not do theirs, it is not his problem.

"Eddie."

"Yes, Darling?"

"Did we- Did I do the right thing?"

"You did what you thought was best for them. If saving their souls meant hurting Ares, then we did what we had to do."

"But I did not save them."

"It's not only up to you. They have to put in the effort themselves," Eddie said, eyes never meeting his partner's. Venom did not like the tone in his voice but kept silent. Hades needed to think.

Fear gives way to anger. It has before and will continue to do so until the end of time. Humanity began to hate and ignore them. Leaving behind their stories and hiding away their temples in tombs and deep forests. "They will regret this," Spring murmured, watching over a group of small but luckily healthy children play in the fields from his garden's gate. They were close to his own fountain, but they weren't going to happen upon it anytime soon. The trees made sure of it. Soon, the winter months will begin, and they'll be sunken in fear. People will be unable to hide from the chill. Hades slid behind their husband and curled around him.

"There's only so much you can do, Love. They use up their medicine too quickly for it to be any help," they whispered, slowly beginning to rock Eddie to sleep. It'll be a rough few months while he sleeps but it would be worth it when he comes back. He'll be stronger, able to push Carnage further away from his mind as he tries to heal what he could. That's the best thing about Spring. Venom's favorite thing about Eddie was that he was that stubborn flower that breaks through the snow, no matter how thick it was or how weak the plant truly was. He could be shattering, and he'd still come through for what he loved. It was hopeful. It reminded Hades of that fascinating and stupid man they came across in the garden so many years ago. Eddie leaned back on his other, his strained body relaxing. "They'll come back from this, V. It may take a long time, but they will. You just gotta wait."

I will,’ Venom thought as Eddie finally closed his eyes. His Eddie was always worth the wait.
